The Kings, last season's NHL champions, had tied the game with just 10 seconds left in regulation but Patrick Kane completed his hat-trick with the winning goal at 11:40 of the second overtime period.

Chicago, who won the Presidents' Trophy for scoring the most points in the regular season, will host the Stanley Cup opener on Wednesday at the United Center.

Kane took a pass from Jonathan Toews on a two-on-one breakaway and rifled the puck past Kings' netminder Jonathan Quick to seal the Blackhawks place in the Final against Boston, who swept Pittsburgh 4-0 to win the East.

"I knew it was coming as soon as he picked up the puck," Kane said of the winning goal. "Johnny made a great pass and I just tried to get it off as quick as I could."

Kane's second, which put Chicago 3-2 up with less than four minutes to play in the third period, looked set to be the winner but the Kings stunned the home crowd when Mike Richards found the net with less than 10 seconds left on the clock.

Kane said the Blackhawks struggled to regain the momentum after the late Kings goal.

"That was so emotional, you start thinking about that when it goes in, you're 14 seconds away from going to the Finals and I think that kind of stuck with us for that first overtime," he added.

"They had the momentum after that point but for us to stick with it in the first overtime and end up winning the game, it's just huge. We didn't have the same jump but after we got over it, it was nice to close it out for sure."

The Final will pit 2010 winners Chicago against 2011 champions Boston.

Andrew Shaw said the Blackhawks would soak in the win but already had their minds on the Bruins.

"It's unbelievable, it's surreal, it's been a dream of mine since I was a little kid, but all the excitement in the room, we have got to compose that," Shaw said.

"We have a big series ahead of us with a great team. The boys are going to bring the intensity and energy we had tonight and it's going to be a great series."

Chicago got off to the best possible start, defenseman Duncan Keith sending in a long-range shot that sneaked between Quick's pads after less than four minutes.

One of the NHL's top goalies, Quick was beaten again two minutes later when Kane scrambled the puck home for his first goal of the night.

But the Kings would not down without a fight and got a shorthanded goal from Dwight King midway through the second period before Anze Kopitar put the puck away on a powerplay early in the third to tie the score at 2-2.

China, which has long chafed at U.S. accusations that it carries out extensive surveillance on American government and commercial operations, may now have to make a decision on how to deal with the problem presented by the 29-year-old Edward Snowden, who has come out as the source of the leaks.

Cyber-security was one of the main topics during the informal summit this weekend between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama at an estate in the California desert where they also sought to build a personal relationship.

But Snowden's presence in Hong Kong has already dragged China into what would have been a domestic issue for the United States.

"It's going to be seen by both sides as an unwelcome distraction," said Jean-Pierre Cabestan, a China politics expert at the Hong Kong Baptist University.

"This comes at a delicate time because of the Xi-Obama summit and the much bigger issues that both countries have to tackle and both governments and presidents have to discuss."

The Guardian newspaper reported Sunday that Snowden who says he worked at the National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency is the self-confessed source of leaks about a phone records monitoring program and an Internet scouring program. Snowden was working as a contractor in an NSA office in Hawaii until he left for Hong Kong on May 20, the Guardian reported.

Snowden checked out of Hong Kong's Mira Hotel on Monday. It was unclear where he went next.

U.S. officials see cybersecurity as probably the most pressing bilateral challenge, and Obama confronted Xi with specific evidence of intellectual property theft the U.S. says is coming from China. Xi said China was also a victim of cyber-attacks but did not publicly acknowledge his own country's alleged activities.

The leaks about Washington's own domestic surveillance program could end up hurting U.S. efforts to pressure China on cybersecurity, said Zhu Feng, an expert on China-U.S. relations at Peking University in Beijing.

"This case will hurt the U.S. bargaining power and dishonor its own credibility in charging China for cyberattacks. This is truth-telling," Zhu said. "China will likely tell the U.S., 'don't be too high profile, and don't take the moral high ground.'"

In going to Hong Kong, Snowden went to a Chinese territory that enjoys relative autonomy and has what he called a commitment to free speech. Although Hong Kong has an extradition treaty with the U.S., the document has some exceptions, including for crimes deemed political.

However, any negotiations about his possible handover will involve Beijing, which is unlikely to want to jeopardize its relationship with Washington over someone it would consider of little political interest, some analysts said.

"He doesn't give any information that's of any particular use to China or that has a great deal of political utility," said David Zweig, an expert on Chinese politics at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Zweig said both sides were likely to try to play down the affair, saying they would not want to waste the effort made over the weekend in California.

A highlight of the summit was a 50-minute stroll Obama and Xi took through the desert on Saturday minus their advisers as well as their coats and ties, sitting on a California redwood bench that Obama gave Xi as a gift.

"The 'shirt sleeves' summit looked nice and they looked like they really were trying to kick back, put up their feet and talk about where they saw the countries going," Zweig said. "I can't imagine that after all this effort, they're going to let this one thing make a mess of it."

China's Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the issue.

Cabestan, the expert at Hong Kong Baptist University, suggested that perhaps Snowden's appearance in Hong Kong provided an opportunity for the United States and China to show that they can cooperate.

He said the two sides displayed a similar ability to work together in dealing with Chinese police chief Wang Lijun's flight to a U.S. consulate in February last year, which later sparked China's biggest political scandal. U.S. diplomats say they would not have been able to grant Wang asylum. After an overnight stay at the consulate, Wang was returned to Chinese state security.

"I think, likewise, this case is going to be treated in a discreet manner in order not to complicate a relationship which is already pretty complicated," Cabestan said.

Marcela Franco, 26, died of her injuries at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, according to Santa Monica College spokeswoman Tricia Ramos.

Franco had been a passenger in a Ford Explorer driven by her father, campus employee Carlos Navarro Franco, 68, who also was killed in the attack.

Investigators trying to determine why the gunman planned the shooting spree were focusing on a deadly act of domestic violence that touched off the mayhem.

The heavily armed man's attack against his own family led to Friday's violence in Santa Monica streets, lasting just a matter of minutes until he was shot to death in a chaotic scene at a college library by police.

Investigators were looking at family connections to find a motive because the killer's father and brother were the first victims, an official briefed on the probe who requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly told The Associated Press.

The killer, who died a day shy of his 24th birthday, was connected to a home that went up in flames after the first shootings, said police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks. She refused to elaborate or name the suspect because a surviving family member was out of the country and couldn't immediately be notified.

Standing next to the weapons and ammo found at multiple crime scenes, Seabrooks said at a Saturday news conference that the "cowardly murderer" planned the attack and was capable of firing 1,300 rounds.

An international team of astronomers has found thatlikely contributed at least 20 percent of the infrared cosmic background, light emitted 400 million to 800 million years after the Big Bang that created our universe 13.8 billion years ago.

These early pioneers may have been the seeds that later grew into , which contain millions to billions of times the mass of our sun, researchers said. []

"It's a relief to find a possible signature of these seeds," study co-author Guenther Hasinger, director of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, told SPACE.com.

The earliest black holes

Black holes possess gravitational fields so powerful that not even light can escape. They are generally believed to form after a star dies in a gigantic explosion known as a , which crushes the remaining core into a tiny but incredibly dense volume.

It's unclear how black holes grow to supermassive proportions, but they can apparently do so quite rapidly. For example, some of them were apparently already well-established by 800 million years or so after the .

To learn more about the earliest stars and the first black holes, the study team analyzed X-ray and infrared signals using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope, respectively.

The X-rays that Chandra saw likely came from matter that became superheated as it rushed into black holes, researchers said. The infrared rays Spitzer detected, on the other hand, make up the cosmic infrared background, the collective light from clusters of massive stars in the universe's first stellar generations after the Big Bang, as well as from black holes, which generate vast amounts of energy as they devour gas.

The investigators focused on a region known as the Extended Groth Strip, a well-analyzed slice of sky slightly larger than the full moon in the constellation Bootes. They concentrated on spots that shone powerfully in both infrared and X-ray light. Black holes are the only plausible sources that can produce both forms of light at the intensities they looked at, scientists said.

"This measurement took us some five years to complete and the results came as a great surprise to us," lead author Nico Cappelluti, an astronomer with the National Institute of Astrophysics in Bologna, Italy, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said in a statement.

"Our results indicate black holes are responsible for at least 20 percent of the cosmic infrared background, which indicates intense activity from black holes feeding on gas during the epoch of the first stars," co- author Alexander Kashlinsky, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement.

How monsters grow

These early objects could help explain the origins of supermassive black holes, researchers said, and also shed light on another puzzle from the universe's youth a stage known as reionization.

During this era between about 150 million to 800 million years after the , radiation ionized the neutrally charged hydrogen pervading the universe to its constituent protons and electrons.

"It is currently thought generally, although not unanimously, that stars were responsible for reionization," Kashlinsky told SPACE.com. "Our result indicates that black holes were a significant, potentially dominant, contributor to that process."

It remains uncertain how massive these early black holes were. They could be mini- containing a few tens of thousands of solar masses, born from the collapse of giant clouds of gas and dust. Or they could be micro-quasars a few hundred solar masses large spawned from massive dying stars.

Mini-quasars would be heavily obscured by clouds and thus likely would not factor into reionization very much, while micro-quasars could easily pump out enough radiation to make a key contribution, Hasinger said.

The Euclid mission from the European Space Agency and the eROSITA mission from Russia and Germany might be able to shed more light on these early black holes. In addition, NASA's upcoming James Webb Space Telescope might be able to see these objects individually, confirming whether they are mini-quasars or micro-quasars, Hasinger said.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - In the debate over when the Federal Reserve is likely to start scaling back its massive bond-buying stimulus, the number of jobs the economy generates is key.

And there's little agreement on exactly where that sweet spot lies.

Researchers from the Chicago Fed on Thursday argued that the huge job losses caused by the financial crisis and the ensuing recession mean the economy must generate about 195,000 jobs a month to bring unemployment down to normal levels within four years.

But a study from the Cleveland Fed on Friday suggests that gains of significantly less than that would mark "steady progress" toward full employment.

"Ultimately, the level of improvement that is deemed 'substantial' will be in the eye of the beholder, but we will consider outlooks which make steady and meaningful progress in lowering unemployment," wrote Cleveland Fed director of research Mark Schweitzer and research economist Murat Tasci in an economic commentary posted to the bank's website. "The scenarios that we view as relevant in today's economic environment would produce average employment gains of 150,000 per month or less for the current year."

Both papers are sure to feed the speculation over what level of job growth could trigger a reduction in the Fed's current bond-buying program. The Fed - the U.S. central bank - has said it will keep buying assets until the labor market outlook improves "substantially" but has provided no specific benchmarks.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke last month said the Fed may consider reducing its pace of monthly purchases, now at $85 billion in Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities, in its next few meetings if the labor market continues to improve.

Fed officials next meet June 18-19 to discuss policy.

Employers added 175,000 jobs last month, a government report on Friday showed, bringing the average monthly gain for this year to 189,000.

The gain falls short of the 200,000 monthly job additions that Chicago Fed President Charles Evans has said he would like to see for several months before he is confident the labor market has turned around.

But monthly job growth of over 200,000 is unlikely given the decline over the last decade in the rate at which people typically find jobs, combined with an aging population that trims the number of U.S. workers, Cleveland Fed's Schweitzer and Tasci wrote on Friday.

Indeed, they wrote, the economy could plausibly add just 106,000 jobs each month this year and still be considered making "steady progress."

Even assuming economic growth outpaces current estimates, the Cleveland Fed economists wrote Friday, employment growth would still be just 147,000 per month this year, on pace to bring unemployment down to 6.5 percent by the third quarter of 2014.

The Fed has pledged to keep short-term interest rates near zero until the unemployment rate, now at 7.6 percent, drops to at least 6.5 percent.

Cleveland Fed President Sandra Pianalto has said the Fed could slow its pace of asset purchases to ease the likelihood of excessive risk-taking or financial market distortion.

Pianalto and Chicago's Evans trade off for membership on the Fed's policy-setting panel each year, and Evans has the vote this year.

Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart, who also votes this year, said this week he expects employment growth to continue in a range of around 160,000 to 175,000 jobs per month, and that anything less might be cause for renewed concern.

BRIDGE TOO FAR?

The divide among Fed economists is mirrored in disagreements among private forecasters.

To Eric Green, who heads global rates, currency and commodity research at TD Securities, gains of 175,000 or perhaps even lower should be enough to convince the Fed that it is safe to reduce stimulus.

"It is movement toward this type of outcome that the Fed is looking for, not a magical number that must be hit every month for six months," he wrote.

Carl Tannenbaum, chief economist at Northern Trust in Chicago, expressed confidence that Evans' goal is "not a bridge too far" given the pace at which the economy has added jobs despite the fiscal headwinds so far.

As those headwinds dissipate later in the year, "you could certainly see 200,000 a month," Tannenbaum said.

Traders, for their part, took Friday's jobs figures as more evidence the Fed will scale back stimulus sooner rather than later and, eventually, begin raising rates.

Traders of short-term U.S. interest-rate futures now are pricing in a first Fed rate hike for December 2014, about six weeks earlier than they had expected before Friday's jobs report.

Obama today nominated three judges for the powerful D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals despite GOP filibuster threats. The White House threatened to veto a House GOP spending bill that makes cuts in line with the Republicans' budget, setting the stage for a possible political standoff this fall, and the administration reasserted its faith in Attorney General Eric Holder, a perennial target for the president's opponents.

Whether the White House's tactics will be effective remains to be seen. Republicans say they're committed to following investigations into the controversies wherever they may lead, and the president faces a compressed time frame in his second term to pursue policy initiatives.

But here are three signs suggesting the White House is trying to change the subject after being battered in the media for the last several weeks.

1. Obama all but dared Senate Republicans to a filibuster showdown over judges. Introducing Patricia Ann Millett, Cornelia Pillard and Robert Wilkins, Obama bemoaned that the D.C. Circuit Court (the second-highest in the country) is short-staffed. With three vacancies on the 11-judge court, the president's Rose Garden announcement comes as Republican lawmakers say the president is trying to "pack" the court.

Even before Obama announced his appointees, Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassleythe nominations as "reminiscent of FDR's era," an epithet meant to suggest the White House is trying to pack the court with political allies. On Tuesday, Obama sounded a defiant tone, criticizing the GOP for blocking judicial nominations. He recounted how he withdrew Caitlin Halligan's nomination for the appeals court after a two-and-a-half-year confirmation wait. "It has to stop. Too much of the people's business is at stake," Obama said.

2. Obama two House appropriations bills. These measures set funding for the Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs departments. The veto threat is a signal to Republicans that the president remains opposed to spending cuts assumed in the House-passed budget engineered by Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. That budget assumes across-the-board cuts associated with sequestration will remain in effect. Democrats, though, want to replace those cuts with savings elsewhere, according to . The veto threat is also significant because it raises the stakes heading into the new fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1, when the government could face a possible shutdown and the treasury will reach its borrowing limit. The GOP legislation "would hurt our economy and require draconian cuts to middle-class priorities," the .

3. The White House is casting critics as partisan. Over the weekend, former White House adviser David Plouffe lashed out at House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, dredging up decades-old allegations against the California Republican. "Strong words from Mr Grand Theft Auto and suspected arsonist/insurance swindler. And loose ethically today," Plouffe tweeted. Meanwhile, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough lent crucial support to embattled Attorney General Eric Holder, with his spokesman telling , Holder "has the intellect, experience and integrity to efficiently run the Department of Justice and not get distracted by the partisans who seem more interested in launching political attacks."

But that's still a big improvement over its previous showing at the worlds in La Molina, Spain, two years ago when the team returned home with a just one podium finish.

Robert Joncas, Canada's high performance director, says he's satisfied with the results.

Joncas says the team will be aiming for five medals again next year at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

On the men's side, Spencer O'Brien and Mark McMorris won gold and silver, respectively, in the slopestyle event during the first weekend of competition.

For the women, Maelle Ricker won gold and Dominique Maltais took silver in the snowboard cross competition on Saturday.

Ricker, a 34-year-old from Squamish, B.C., is the only Canadian snowboarder guaranteed a spot in Sochi.

Joncas says there's room for improvement as the group gears up for the Olympics, but the building blocks are there.

"We're still very satisfied," he said.

On Sunday, the eight Canadians in the running in the parallel slalom finished off the podium.

In the women's competition, Russia's Ekaterina Zavialova won gold, beating out Patrizia Kummer of Switzerland in the final at the Stoneham Mountain Resort. Germany's Amelie Kober grabbed bronze.

In the men's, the Slovenian Rok Marguc won gold, Justin Reiter of the United States took silver and Roland Fischnaller of Italy got the bronze.

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland is preparing to officially reject accusations by U.S. Senators this week that it acts as a tax haven for large multinationals and launch a diplomatic offensive to repair the damage done to its reputation abroad.

Ireland has been forced to defend its low corporate tax rate after the Senate said last week that iPhone and iPad maker Apple paid little or no tax on tens of billions of dollars in profits channeled through Irish subsidiaries and that it had effectively negotiated a special corporate tax rate of less than 2 percent.

Irish ministers and officials have lined up to insist that their tax system is transparent and that other countries were responsible if Apple paid tax at such low rates. Finance Minister Michael Noonan said Ireland would not be the "whipping boy" for the Senate subcommittee.

The government will likely put its response on the record this week, two government sources said, and will tell the committee led by veteran tax sleuth Senator Carl Levin that Ireland is not a tax haven, nor did it cut Apple a special tax deal.

"Undoubtedly there's a risk of reputational damage if we don't defend our corner and set out the facts, so of course that's happening," Ireland's European Affairs Minister Lucinda Creighton told Reuters, referring to the response being drafted.

"I've no doubt there will be a strong response, and we will strongly defend Ireland as a safe, a legally sound and a good place to do business. What you see is what you get, and that is why so many global companies are headquartered in Ireland."

Creighton was speaking from Dublin airport ahead of a four-day trip to Washington and New York where she will meet business leaders and politicians and address the prestigious Columbia University.

While the trade mission was planned long before last week's revelations on Capitol Hill, Creighton said she and her fellow ministers would use every opportunity to put right the "misinformation" heard in the Senate last week.

Ireland has a network in place to quickly spread that message. After it took a financial bailout in late 2010, Dublin set up its Economic Messaging Unit to coordinate communications between all government agencies, departments and embassies.

Irish embassies from Beijing to Buenos Aires were issued rebuttal points last week, a normal practice for major stories, while Ireland's ambassador in Washington held a conference call with government departments and the state agency charged with attracting investment into Ireland to discuss the next steps.

DINNER JOKES IN BRUSSELS

Within weeks of coming to office in 2011, Prime Minister Enda Kenny summoned all the country's ambassadors to Dublin to brief them on how best to restore a reputation he said was in tatters.

The fresh assault will be similar, one diplomatic source said, adding that the key focus would be liaising with a strong network of contacts in the U.S. Administration and on Capitol Hill, where the leaders of Ireland and the United States traditionally meet for lunch to mark St. Patrick's Day.

While Dublin was able to call on ex-President Bill Clinton to tell U.S. companies last year that they would be "nuts" not to invest in Ireland, the task could be trickier this time with the criticism emanating from its normally friendly ally.

"That was a blindside for Ireland Inc. because we always thought we were on the same page as Anglo-American capitalism. We thought it would stick up for us," said Hugo Brady, senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform in Brussels.

"The PR side of it is really bad for Ireland because Ireland and tax haven are going together in mainstream conversation in Brussels. It hasn't done our image much good when people start making dinner jokes about Apple being an Irish company."

While Ireland will concentrate its energy in the United States to keep attracting jobs from the likes of Apple, Google and Pfizer, it will also need to keep an eye out for any backlash in Europe where its low corporate tax rate of 12.5 percent has drawn criticism in the past.

One influential member of the European Parliament said that while Dublin should be given time to adjust, it should adopt a standardized European Union tax system and ultimately a minimum rate of corporation tax.

"Ireland should take its hands out of other countries' pockets. Ireland's tax system is designed to tax income other people have earned," Sven Giegold told Reuters, underscoring how emotive the issue will be in elections in his native Germany.

"If you want to heat up a room in an election meeting in Germany, you have to talk about tax avoidance. It has become one of the most emotional topics. People are outraged."

The Nikkei has been dictating market sentiment since Thursday, when it plummeted more than 7 percent after interest rates on the country's benchmark 10-year bond spiked to above 1 percent for the first time in a year. The swing in Japanese bonds unnerved investors at a time when Japan's already overburdened government finances are vulnerable to rises in interest rates.

The Nikkei 225 index rose 1.2 percent to close at 14,311.98 as the yen slipped against the dollar; the benchmark fell 3 percent on Tuesday. Overall, however, the index has soared 37 percent this year, a show of investor support for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his aggressive policies aimed at reversing years of economic malaise and deflation.

The recovery helped European stocks rise, with Britain's FTSE 100, which was closed for a public holiday Monday, jumping 1.6 percent to 6,763.55. Germany's DAX advanced 1.1 percent to 8,474.39, while France's CAC-40 rose 1.5 percent to 4,055.88.

Wall Street looked set for gains following a three-day holiday weekend. Dow Jones industrial futures were up 0.7 percent to 15,409. S&P 500 futures were likewise 0.7 percent higher, at 1,662.50.

Investors were awaiting the release later Tuesday of data on U.S. consumer confidence and home prices. The data will be scrutinized for how it might influence the Fed, which is undertaking its third round of aggressive bond-buying to help the economy. Speculation that the U.S. central bank might scale back the program based on a recent improvement in some economic indicators has sparked jitters in stock markets.

"The next move of the Federal Reserve is still the question for most investors," said Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong.

The consumer confidence data will highlight the ongoing improvement in sentiment driven by increases in both stock markets and the property sector, said Mitul Kotecha, an analyst at Credit Agricole CIB. "In the debate about early Fed tapering, the confidence data will err on the side (of) reducing Fed asset purchases sooner rather than later."

Elsewhere in Asia, the gains in Japan helped hoist other markets higher. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.1 percent to 22,924.25. South Korea's Kospi gained 0.3 percent to 1,986.22. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.2 percent to 4,970.70.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was up 69 cents to $94.84 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 10 cents to close at $94.15 per barrel on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2926 from $1.2934 late Monday in Europe. The dollar rose to 102.05 yen from 100.99.

May 25 (Reuters) - Jonathan Toews broke his playoff goal drought as the Chicago Blackhawks staved off elimination with a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings in Game Five of the National Hockey League Western Conference semi-finals on Saturday.

The top-seeded Blackhawks reduced the series deficit to 3-2 against the seventh-seeded Red Wings with Andrew Shaw scoring twice and captain Toews grabbing a crucial goal.

Chicago's Bryan Bickell opened the scoring late in the first period when he was on hand for a third rebound after Jimmy Howard saved two separate quick fire Chicago shots.

The rebound theme continued, but this time for the Red Wings, when Daniel Cleary buried the puck from a difficult side angle midway through the second period to tie the scores.

Shaw then stole the lead back for the Blackhawks with a deflection from a Brent Seabrook shot in the power-play and the home side was able to kick on from there.

Toews produced a critical two-goal buffer with a power-play goal late in the second period before Shaw completed the scoring with a wrap around goal seven minutes into the final period.
