Earlier, Alexander Povetkin knocked out previously undefeated challenger Andrzej Wawrzyk in the third round to retain his WBA heavyweight crown, setting up a long-awaited clash with super champion Vladimir Klitschko later this year.

Lebedev, who knocked out previously undefeated Colombian challenger Santander Silgado in his last fight at the same Moscow arena in December, took the initiative from the start.

But 41-year-old Jones was not about to back down. Heavy punishment finally took its toll on the Russian as his right eye was completely shut down by round five.

The men continued their slugfest in the later rounds before the Panamanian stunned Lebedev and the partisan home crowd at Moscow's Crocus City Hall with a right cross as the referee stopped the fight late in the penultimate round.

Jones improved his record to 39 wins, including 31 by knockout, with three defeats and two draws, while Lebedev's record dropped to 25 wins and two loses.

Watched by Klitschko's elder brother and WBC champion Vitaly, Povetkin floored lanky Pole Wawrzyk with a right hook in round two, then sent his opponent to the canvas again in the following round before finishing the job a few seconds later.

The 33-year-old Russian improved his record to 26-0, including 18 by knockout, while Wawrzyk suffered his first defeat in 28 professional fights.

"It was a good workout. I didn't aim for an early knockout, it just happened," Povetkin told Russian television.

Asked if he was now ready to fight Ukrainian Klitschko, who stopped Italian Francesco Pianeta in his last fight in Germany earlier this month, Povetkin said: "Yes, let's do it."

Povetkin's manager Vladimir Khryunov, who last month won the bid to stage the Klitschko fight, added: "It will be held here in Moscow, probably in early October."

Vitaly Klitschko, however, was a bit more cautious.

"The fight is on the cards but the contract has not been signed yet," he told Russian television.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - In a leafy suburb of Frankfurt, a state-of-the-art plant churns out up to 1 million insulin pens every day in French drugmaker Sanofi's drive to keep its no. 2 spot in the $43 billion-a-year diabetes market.

The facility is part of a hub - nicknamed Insulin City - dedicated to research and development, production, and smart technology for diabetes treatments that Sanofi says will help drive its growth as older blockbusters lose patent protection.

"This site represents an investment of more than 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) and clearly shows our dedication to diabetes," Christian Lerche, head of R&D project direction at Sanofi's diabetes unit, told Reuters.

It is a critical moment for Lerche and his colleagues: while arch-rival and market leader Novo Nordisk has suffered a recent product setback in the United States, competition is mounting from the likes of Eli Lilly, Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca.

All are eyeing a fast-growing global market in which the total number of diabetes sufferers is projected to leap to well over half a billion by 2030.

Lantus, a synthetic insulin developed at the Frankfurt centre in the 1990s, is currently Sanofi's top-selling drug. Last year it grew almost 20 percent to generate 5 billion euros in sales - but is set to lose patent protection in 2015.

To fend off its rivals, Sanofi is testing an improved version of Lantus in late-stage trials as well as a combination of the product with Lyxumia, a once-daily injection that controls blood sugar levels in a different way.

Investors and medics will get an insight into whether Sanofi has a new winner when data on these studies are made public at the June 21-25 American Diabetes Association annual meeting in Chicago. If positive, the results could prove Sanofi is in good shape to protect its market position.

As part of its plan to broaden its diabetes portfolio beyond drugs and injection pens, Sanofi has also rolled out new devices, like a blood glucose meter plug-in for Apple's iPhone in the United States, which allows diabetics to check their levels on a smartphone. It is currently testing more advanced versions that would e-mail readings to the doctor.

FIERCE COMPETITION

Drugmakers are competing fiercely in the type 2 diabetes market as the number of people with the disease, which is linked to obesity, continues to grow rapidly - including in emerging markets where middle classes are switching to a Western diet.

An estimated 371 million people worldwide are living with diabetes, with China now topping the list, according to the International Diabetes Federation. It predicts as many as 552 million may have the disease by 2030.

Diabetics typically start out on oral medicine but often need to move on to insulin injections to regulate their blood-sugar levels.

One side-effect of taking insulin can be hypoglycaemia, when sugar levels become dangerously low.

The new formulation of Lantus promises to last longer and reduce the incidence of hypoglycaemia seen with the old version - a drawback that Novo Nordisk has highlighted when touting its big new product hope, a novel insulin called Tresiba.

Although Tresiba is approved in Europe, Novo Nordisk suffered a setback in the United States where concerns over potential heart side effects mean new tests are needed, delaying a U.S. launch by several years.

That delay could play straight into Sanofi's hands, provided the improved version of Lantus avoids similar safety issues.

Deutsche Bank analysts expect the latest clinical trials to confirm a good profile for the Sanofi product, increasing investors' confidence that the French group can not only protect but also grow its diabetes business beyond 2016.

Sanofi shares have outperformed the European drugs sector by 16 percent over the past 12 months on growing optimism that the company will find new growth drivers, in diabetes and elsewhere, to offset loss of patent protection on older medicines.

BIOSIMILAR THREAT

Still, the pressure is on. Sanofi needs to make its new Lantus a success because it is likely to face competition from a so-called biosimilar version of the original Lantus made by Eli Lilly, the world's no. 3 insulin maker.

Because Lantus is a complex biological drug, it is difficult to make chemically identical generic versions but rivals can develop a product that is very similar.

"Since Eli Lilly is an established diabetes player, that's quite a threat," said Valentina Gburcik, a healthcare analyst at consulting firm GlobalData.

At the same time, Sanofi faces indirect competition from the growing class of injectable GLP-1 medicines that stimulate insulin production when blood sugar levels become too high.

Sanofi's own Lyxumia is just such a product but the GLP-1 landscape is becoming increasingly crowded. Novo Nordisk is pushing its top-seller Victoza hard in the face of competition from Byetta and Bydureon, which are now sold jointly by Bristol-Myers and AstraZeneca, after they bought out Amylin Pharmaceuticals. Several others are waiting in the wings.

Having launched Lyxumia in Europe, Sanofi is working to develop a pen that would deliver a combination of the treatment with Lantus.

"Lyxumia will take a small market share by itself, but it may grab considerable market share from Lantus biosimilars because the combination shows a much better profile than Lantus alone," Gburcik said.

There is plenty of work to keep the diabetes team in Frankfurt busy. ($1 = 0.7579 euros)

Francisco Liriano pitched seven innings allowing just two hits, striking out eight as the Pirates (36-25) stayed in touch while the Cubs (24-34) sunk deeper in the mire.

It took a Desmond Jennings two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to interrupt Jason Hammel's shutout bid and help edge the Tampa Bay Rays to a 2-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Tampa Bay (33-27) are fourth in the AL East but still have the Orioles (34-27), New York Yankees (35-26) and Red Sox (37-24) within reach. The Yankees fell 4-1 to Seattle (27-35).

The prestigious Institute of Medicine is recommending that schools provide opportunities for at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day for students and that PE become a core subject.

The report, released Thursday, says only about half of the nation's youngsters are getting at least an hour of vigorous or moderate-intensity physical activity every day.

Another concern, the report says, is that 44 percent of school administrators report slashing big chunks of time from physical education, arts and recess since the passage of the No Child Left Behind law in 2001 in order to boost classroom time for reading and math.

With childhood obesity on the rise about 17 percent of children ages 2 through 19 are obese and kids spending much of the day in the classroom, the chairman of the committee that wrote the report said schools are the best place to help shape up the nation's children.

"Schools for years have been responsible for various health programs such as nutrition, breakfast and lunch, immunizations, screenings," Harold W. Kohl III, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Texas School of Public Health, said in an interview with The Associated Press.

"Physical activity should be placed alongside those programs to make it a priority for us as a society," he said.

The report calls on the Education Department to recommend that PE be adopted as a core subject.

It says physical education in school is the "only sure opportunity" for youngsters to have access to activity that will help keep them healthy.

The majority of states, about 75 percent, mandate PE, according to the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. But most do not require a specific amount of time for PE in school, and more than half allow exemptions or substitutions, such as marching band, cheerleading and community sports.

Many kids also aren't going to gym class at school every single day. According to the CDC, only about 30 percent of students nationwide attend PE classes five days a week.

Specifically, the report recommends:

All elementary school students should spend an average of 30 minutes each day in PE class.

Middle and high school students should spend an average of 45 minutes each day in PE class.

State and local officials should find ways get children more physical activity in the school environment.

PE isn't the sole solution, though.

The report advocates a "whole-of-school" approach where recess and before-and-after-school activities including sports are made accessible to all students to help achieve the 60-minutes-a-day recommendation for physical activity. It could be as simple as having kids walk or bike to school, or finding ways to add a physical component to math and science class lessons.

The report also cautions against taking away recess as a form of punishment, and it urges schools to give students frequent classroom breaks.

Schools can do this if they make it a priority, said Paul Roetert, CEO of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

"We have an obligation to keep kids active," Roetert said in an interview. "We have research to show that physical activity helps kids perform better in school. It helps them focus better in the classroom ... and they behave better in school. So there are all kinds of side benefits."

Kitty Porterfield, spokeswoman for The School Superintendents Association, said nobody is opposed to physical education.

"Everybody would love to see more of it in schools," said Porterfield. "Given the testing and academic pressures for excellence on schools, often physical education slides to the bottom of the barrel."

The idea of putting more of an emphasis on physical education in schools has support in Congress.

Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, plans to introduce the PHYSICAL Act on Thursday. It would recognize health education and physical education as core subjects within elementary and secondary schools. Reps. John Lewis, D-Ga., and Jared Polis, D-Colo., will join Fudge as co-sponsors.

The question is how much access to taxpayer-subsidized care should be granted to immigrants who were here illegally and are embarking on a path to citizenship. Answering it has pulled the noxious politics around President Barack Obama's signature health care law into the immigration debate.

That's threatening fragile alliances between Republicans and Democrats, already causing one key House member, GOP Rep. Raul Labrador of Idaho, to ditch a bipartisan group in the House that has been struggling to finalize a comprehensive immigration bill.

"What may be the story at the end of this session is that Obamacare killed immigration reform," Labrador said before a last-gasp effort failed this week to resolve the health care dispute in a way he could accept. Now the seven other members of the House group are moving forward without Labrador, who said their proposal doesn't go far enough to ensure that immigrants must pay for all their own health care costs without leaving taxpayers on the hook for any of it.

Health care and immigrants was a hot-button issue even before Republican Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina yelled "You lie!" at Obama four years ago as the president told Congress that immigrants in the country illegally wouldn't be covered under his health plan. For Republicans, allowing immigrants here illegally to get coverage under Obamacare remains a nonstarter, even once they've taken the first steps toward legalizing their status.

"We cannot be providing Obamacare subsidies to people who have been violating our immigration laws," said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., an author of a bipartisan immigration bill that the full Senate began debating Friday.

The Senate bill bars immigrants in a new provisional legal status, the first step toward a green card and citizenship, from getting taxpayer-subsidized care. That includes Medicaid and tax subsidies to buy coverage in the new state purchasing exchanges being set up by Obamacare. The immigrants would be in provisional status for 10 years, and only once they get a permanent resident green card would they be able to access Obamacare subsidies.

The approach is opposed by immigrant advocates who pushed for provisional legal immigrants to be allowed government-subsidized care, arguing that it makes sense for public health and the economy. But the idea was opposed by Republicans, and even Democratic authors of the Senate bill didn't fight too hard for it, advocates said, partly because it would have greatly increased the cost of the legislation. By just how much is unclear. But the Obamacare tax subsidies will cost on average about $5,300 annually for each person who gets them starting next year, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

"We definitely were pushing from the start, and basically we tried to remind the Democrats that this was sort of an unfulfilled promise from the Affordable Care Act, when undocumented immigrants were excluded," said Sonal Ambegaokar, health policy attorney at the National Immigration Law Center. She said some Democrats were open to the arguments but that it quickly became clear they wouldn't prevail, "for political reasons, and not economic reasons."

As the House immigration group moves forward trying to unveil a bill, it may include placeholder language on health coverage similar to what's in the Senate measure.

So where does that leave newly legalized immigrants in provisional status with no access to publicly funded care?

In the aftermath of Wilson's outburst, the White House tightened its stance on the Affordable Care Act, saying that immigrants here illegally wouldn't be able to buy coverage in new health care exchanges even using their own money. But the Senate immigration bill does allow them to go into the exchanges with their own money once they obtain provisional legal status. For most, that would be prohibitively expensive.

Although current law bars immigrants here illegally from Medicaid and Obamacare, pregnant women, children, seniors and the disabled have access to emergency Medicaid services. Immigrants here illegally can also access community health centers. That would be the case for immigrants getting provisional status under the immigration bill, too.

Beyond that, a certain number of immigrants would get employer-sponsored care. Right now, some 30 percent of immigrants here illegally are covered that way, according to the Migration Policy Institute. That number would likely rise at least somewhat if the immigration bill becomes law.

But the issues are far from settled. Along with border security and other matters, health coverage is almost certain to be the subject of disputes on the Senate floor in the weeks ahead.

As debate on the legislation opened Friday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., argued that the bill offers "commonsense reforms which will make our country safer and help undocumented immigrants get right with the law."

A leading opponent, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., claimed the bill offers a false promise of enforcing immigration laws and securing the border.

"It will definitely give amnesty today, it will definitely give immediate legal status to some 11 million people today," Sessions said. But the promise of enforcement "is not fulfilled."

Friday was given over to debate, and the first votes, on moving the bill forward, will come Tuesday. Reid said he wants to finish the legislation by July 4.

A health care amendment of particular concern to advocates is expected to be offered by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. It would bar immigrants from getting Obamacare subsidies for five years after they've gotten green cards. Hatch notes that a five-year prohibition on new green card holders exists in current law with respect to Medicaid and other programs. Democratic authors of the bill oppose Hatch's amendment but want to find some way to accommodate that and other changes he's proposing in order to get his vote.

Senators are confronting another complication created by their attempt to block immigrants from getting Obamacare subsidies in the exchanges. Employers with 50 or more workers face penalties if they don't offer adequate health coverage to their workers, but some of those penalties depend on how many workers end up shopping in the exchanges with federal subsidies.

Since provisional immigrants don't have the right to get federal subsidies, it appears employers in some cases could face no penalty for failing to insure them, potentially giving employers an incentive to hire newly legalized immigrants over American citizens.

It's a problem senators say they want to work out on the Senate floor, but the solution is not clear.

Critics said the dark mysteries, mind-bending codes and history-laced tourism in "Inferno" will thrill Brown devotees, but panned the U.S. author for passages they said were more suited to a Hollywood film script than a novel.

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon returns in this latest sequel to the blockbuster book and film franchise to follow a trail of clues about 14th century Italian poet Dante Alighieri across Florence, Venice and Istanbul in a race to save the world from a deadly artificial plague.

New York Times reviewer Janet Maslin said the novel has a shaky opening that appears to put Brown's "brainiac franchise" in trouble, but recovers swiftly.

"To the great relief of anyone who enjoys him, Mr. Brown winds up not only laying a breadcrumb trail of clues about Dante (this is "Inferno," after all) but also playing games with time, gender, identity, famous tourist attractions and futuristic medicine," she wrote.

Sales of the book reached the highest level of customer pre-orders at retailer Waterstones since the release of Harry Potter author JK Rowling's adult fiction "The Casual Vacancy" last year.

The Independent newspaper's Boyd Tonkin called the novel "clunky but clever" in a review that asks whether Brown can make a go of one of the oldest plots in fiction - mad scientist threatens world with doom machine.

"Can Brown re-engineer these over-familiar devices of outbreak, pestilence and contagion into a viable organism? However clunkily, he can," Tonkin writes.

But Financial Times reviewer AN Wilson panned "Inferno" as a "nonsensical story" loaded with "scientific gobbledygook" and pointing out Brown's repetitive reliance on the fame of every historical site Langdon comes across.

"The prof and his doctor race past 'Florence's famed Cathedral', and Vasari's 'famed Studiolo', not forgetting the 'world-famous Uffizi Gallery'," Wilson wrote.

"Inferno reads less like a novel than a 'treatment' for a thriller film."

Back in America, USA Today's Brian Truitt offers Brown's novel three and a half stars out of four in a review that calls the book "one hell of a good read".

"Brown has a definite formula in place for putting Langdon through his paces, but watching him go through hell is about as close as a book can come to a summertime cinematic blockbuster," Truitt wrote.

Brown's religion-themed mystery novel "The Da Vinci Code," was published in 2003 and was made into a hit film starring Tom Hanks. It spent more than a year at the top the New York Times bestseller list.

ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli has bought back the Geneva headquarters of his former biotech firm Serono, hoping to establish a biotech research campus.

After selling the family business to German drugmaker Merck KGaA for $13.3 billion in 2006, the Harvard Business School graduate went on to win the America's Cup sailing prize for the second time.

He and his former beauty queen wife Kirsty cut a high profile among the Swiss jet-set.

To buy back the site, Bertarelli formed a company called Campus Biotech with fellow Swiss billionaire Hansjoerg Wyss, who made part of his fortune by selling Synthes, a maker of artificial joints, to Johnson & Johnson in 2011 for over $21 billion.

Since selling Serono, Bertarelli, Switzerland's sixth richest man, has founded investment fund Ares Life Sciences which has stakes in medtech, pharmaceutical and diagnostic imaging companies.

Last year he bemoaned Merck's decision to move Merck Serono's HQ to the German city of Darmstadt, affecting 1,250 jobs, saying that a large part of Serono's history had been written in Geneva.

Switzerland has a reputation as a hub for biotech research and is home to nearly 250 biotech companies, employing more than 19,000 people. The pharmaceutical industry accounts for 4 percent of economic output.

Details of the transaction were not disclosed. Merck said the property will be handed over on June 28.

The Technical University in Lausanne (EPFL) and Geneva University are closely involved in the project and will use part of the site as a research center.

Under the project, the Wyss Foundation will give the EPFL 100 million Swiss francs ($103 million) to convert part of the site into a bio- and neuroengineering center known as the "Wyss Institute". The consortium hopes to attract start-up companies to the remainder of the site.

DUBLIN, Ohio (Reuters) - In the eyes of many, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus are inextricably linked as the greatest players of all time and it is probably no surprise that Woods has made a habit of flourishing on Nicklaus-designed courses.

This week, Woods is back in the leafy surrounds of Muirfield Village Golf Club for the Memorial Tournament where he is a five-times winner and defending champion at the elite PGA Tour event hosted by Nicklaus.

"I've always played Nicklaus courses well," world number one Woods told reporters on Wednesday after playing in the pro-am competition at Muirfield Village.

"I've won on quite a few, whether it was in junior golf, college and now professional golf. For some reason, I just feel comfortable in his golf courses, the way he sets it up.

"There is ample room off the tees. The greens are really severe. If you miss the greens, it tests your short game. Those are the things that I think I do well."

Asked if he gained any particular insight into Nicklaus the player when he competed on Nicklaus-designed layouts, Woods replied: "Jack always was one of the best course managers that's ever lived - how he managed not just the emotions but the golf course and the strategy behind how he played it.

"He gives you options and shots to shape to play his courses. If you don't hit the ball in the right spot, you can get penalized. He played very disciplined and at times he was very aggressive, but those were at the right times.

"And he gives you opportunities to do that, the way he designs golf courses, you can be aggressive but you have to be disciplined and put the ball in certain spots."

MASSIVE UNDERSTATEMENT

To say that Woods will tee off in Thursday's opening round in a confident mood would be a massive understatement, the 14-times major winner having triumphed four times in just seven starts on the 2013 PGA Tour.

"I'm looking forward it," smiled Woods, who has not competed since clinching his 78th victory in his 300th career start on the U.S. circuit at the Players Championship three weeks ago.

"I played really well the last tournament at the Players. It's been a nice two weeks off but now it's time to get out and play, and come to an event that I've always loved playing.

"I got a chance to come here as an amateur and watch a little bit. To have Jack be a part of this event with what he has done for the game of golf and to come here and support him has been fantastic for me and lot of the players."

Woods, who has not won a major title since his remarkable playoff victory at the 2008 U.S. Open, played a practice round on Tuesday in atrocious weather conditions at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, venue for the June 13-16 U.S. Open.

"I did not have an inkling that it was going to be as long as it was," Woods said of the classic, 6,846-yard layout which has long been regarded as too short to host a major.

"It was raining sideways and it was just an ugly day. We played it as probably long as it will ever be played.

"In June, obviously the weather won't be like that. It will be hotter, the ball will be flying, the clubs will be different, but the lines (off tees) will be the same."

Woods, who has long targeted the record 18 major titles accumulated by Nicklaus, will take next week off before he travels to Merion for the second major of the year.

Consequently, his focus at this week's Memorial Tournament will be split between his bid for another PGA Tour title and continuing his U.S. Open preparations.

"It's about playing well, hopefully winning the event and carrying that confidence into the Open," the 37-year-old American said.

"I've won it in the past, I'm defending this year and I'm looking forward to the next four days."

The simple, but elegant garment created by Hollywood costume designer Helen Rose for the then 18-year-old Taylor is an oyster shell-colored, floor-length satin gown with a fine silk gauze off-the-shoulder illusion neckline.

The dress, which was a gift from MGM film studios, has a top estimate of 50,000 pounds ($75,300). Rose also designed Grace Kelly's wedding dress for her marriage to the Prince of Monaco.

By the time Taylor married Hilton she was already a veteran actress and was just a year away from her Oscar-nominated performance in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's "A Place in the Sun".

The A-list of old Hollywood - Greer Garson, Gene Kelly, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, Esther Williams, and Van Johnson - were among the many stars who came to congratulate the bride.

The star of "Cleopatra" surpassed Michael Jackson as the highest-earning deceased celebrity in a survey released by Forbes in October 2012, with her estate pulling in $210 million, much of it from a 2011 auction of jewels, costumes and art work.

The auction of Taylor's jewels took in $116 million, more than double the record for a single collection, and set new marks for pearls, colorless diamonds and Indian jewels.

Taylor, who died in 2011 at the age of 79, was married eight times, twice to actor Richard Burton, and had a career spanning seven decades.

She first gained fame in 1944's "National Velvet" at age 12, and was nominated for five Oscars, winning best actress for "Butterfield 8" (1960) and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966), which also starred Burton.
