Asked about any drugs or weapons by officers who went to the Perez home on Tuesday with a search warrant, "Perez responded that he had 'personal use' marijuana in the basement and volunteered to direct the officers to the location of it," an investigative report said.

"He pointed out a number of items of paraphernalia along with two separate 'mason' jars containing a green vegetable matter suspected of being marijuana," it said.

Police, tipped off to suspicious packages by postal inspectors, arranged a delivery Tuesday under surveillance, and Perez's wife, Melanie, accepted two packages, the reports said.

Melanie Perez, whose maiden name is Baum, told the undercover officer delivering the packages that they were intended for her dog, named Brody. The package was addressed to Brody Baum, according to postal inspectors.

A later house search under warrant began while Perez and his wife were out for lunch and a movie, the reports said. A baby sitter was caring for two children.

Police say Perez returned home and mentioned personal marijuana use to the search team of officers.

Perez, 27, and his 29-year-old wife were charged in a complaint filed Friday with misdemeanor drug possession involving just over one-third of a pound of marijuana, suburban Rocky River police said. The two haven't commented, but their attorney said they would plead not guilty.

"We ask that people not rush to judgment. We are confident of a favorable outcome," attorney Terry Gilbert said in a statement on their behalf.

Perez and his wife were released on personal bond.

"Clearly we take these matters seriously and are disappointed whenever there is any negative attention brought to the Indians organization or one of our players," team general manager Chris Antonetti said in a statement. "We understand and respect that there is an ongoing legal process that we will allow to evolve."

Manager Terry Francona had little to say about the matter before Cleveland's game at Detroit on Friday night.

"He's got some friends that care about him, which makes sense, and I've spoken to him a couple times," Francona said. "But out of respect to the situation and the process, we're really not allowed to talk about it."

Under the drug agreement between Major League Baseball and its players' association, marijuana offenses generally result with the player undergoing a treatment program rather than discipline.

Questioned when investigators returned to the house hours after the delivery, Melanie Perez told them that she doesn't smoke marijuana but that her husband "had drug paraphernalia" in the house.

Asked whether the marijuana shipment was intended for her husband, Melanie Perez responded, "What did Chris say?" according to the investigative report.

The packages smelled of marijuana and had a Los Angeles return address with a name that that wasn't associated with that location, postal inspectors said.

Dan Chaplin, a Cleveland defense attorney not connected with the case, compared the charge to a traffic ticket and said a conviction likely would be punished with a fine.

Perez has six saves this season but is on the disabled list with an injured right shoulder. Francona was asked how his recovery is going.

"You know what? He was at the ballpark actually, through all this, I forgot to even ask," Francona said. "Through all of this, I didn't even ask, and I need to."

Perez, an often-polarizing figure, and Cleveland fans have gotten on each other's nerves over the past couple of years. He recently deactivated his Twitter account after criticism from fans following a couple of bad outings.

In previous seasons, Perez has lashed out at fans for not coming to games, and at owners for not spending money on free agents.

PARIS (Reuters) - The current best player in the world meets the greatest claycourt player of all time in a French Open blockbuster on Friday - but it is not even the final.

Unusually no silverware will be at stake when Serbia's Novak Djokovic and Spaniard Rafa Nadal strut on to Philippe Chatrier court to face each other for the 35th time and whoever prevails will be favorite to lift the Musketeers' Cup on Sunday.

Unless, of course, it turns into the kind of last-man-standing tennis trench warfare that is so often the case between them and there is nothing left in the armory for a final against Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Spaniard David Ferrer.

Sixth seed Tsonga, who clinically dispatched Roger Federer in straight sets in the quarter-finals faces his day of reckoning as he attempts to become the first Frenchman to reach the singles final at Roland Garros since Henri Leconte in 1988.

Fourth seed Ferrer is a nuggety opponent yet to drop a set here so far and the 31-year-old will relish the role of party-pooper as he seeks to reach a first grand slam final.

Friday will be the first time Djokovic and Nadal have met before the final of a tournament, other than the ATP World Tour finals round robin stage, since 2009.

In the last 11 meetings, five of which have been in grand slam finals, everything has been on the line.

The most remarkable of those battles was the 2012 Australian Open final where Djokovic and Nadal fought each other to a standstill before the Serb prevailed in a five hour 53 minute epic that took grand slam finals into unchartered territory.

That was Djokovic's seventh successive victory over Nadal and it seemed he had cracked the hardest nut in tennis but since then the 27-year-old Mallorcan has responded with three wins from the last four and leads their overall series 19-15.

Despite Friday's clash falling a round early than most neutrals would like, Djokovic said the mindset of both players would not change in the slightest.

"I'm ready for five sets," he said. "That doesn't mean there is going to be five sets. We'll see what's gonna be.

"Nobody can predict what's going to happen, especially in our matches."

When Nadal beat Djokovic to win a record seventh French Open title last year, little did anyone know that a few weeks later at Wimbledon the Spaniard would be stunned by Czech Lukas Rosol in the second round and then spend seven months out injured.

MENTAL EDGE

Since returning in February, however, Nadal has been dominant again on clay, winning five titles on the surface, albeit losing to Djokovic in the Monte Carlo final.

"That is something that can maybe give me that mental edge when I step onto the court, knowing I already won against him on clay this season," Djokovic said.

"But, again, it's the best of five, so it takes much more than just doing the same thing like in MonteCarlo. It's a grand slam so there is more tension. The final is at stake."

Nadal looked out of sorts for the first week of the tournament but has been transformed in the last two rounds, thrashing Kei Nishikori and Stanislas Wawrinka.

"Is strange," he said of meeting Djokovic in the semis.

"But I am more calm today that I am competing for much more important things than one week ago. Then I was competing just for the second round.

"I'm gonna be nervous for the semi-finals probably. If not, I better go home and do another thing. If you are not nervous to play the semi-finals against the best player of the world, it's because you are not enjoying or you don't feel the passion."

There has been plenty of passion whipped up by Tsonga who is flying the flag for France with the kind of gung-ho tennis that on its day is capable of overwhelming anyone - even Federer.

Tsonga promised the same approach in the semi-finals.

"Once you back down in a rally, he never lets you free," Tsonga said of Ferrer, who he trails 2-1 in career meetings.

"He fights. He never gives up. He runs a lot. He's extremely fast. He has a lot of endurance.

"But I feel I'm able to beat him because I believe I have the weapons for that. I hit harder than he does."

He flipped up his visor to wipe away tears as the crowd roared its approval, and then in Victory Lane gave his bride of two months a long kiss and poured the celebratory winner's milk over his head.

Kanaan is Indy's hard-luck loser no more. He is its champion at last, fittingly with a dose of good luck for a change.

''I have to say, the last lap was the longest lap of my life,'' Kanaan said.

It was one of Indy's most popular victories.

The losers were pleased with the outcome, evidenced by a scene similar to rivals lining up to congratulate Dale Earnhardt when he finally won the Daytona 500 on his 20th try. Dario Franchitti, whose crash brought out the race-ending caution, stood grinning by his crumpled car, two thumbs up as Kanaan passed under yellow.

''When I saw who was leading, it cheered me up a little bit,'' said Franchitti, last year's winner. ''He's a very, very deserving winner.''

The fans thought so, too, standing on their feet, screaming ''TK! TK! TK!'' as he and team owner Jimmy Vasser went by during the traditional victory lap. It felt magical to Kanaan, like he had given the crowd at Indianapolis Motor Speedway a gift.

''It means a lot to me because so many people, I could feel that they wanted me to win, and it's such a selfish thing to do because what are they getting from it?'' Kanaan said. ''I'm the one who gets the trophy. I believed that this win was more for people out there than for me.

''I wanted it all my life, but over the years I was kind of OK with the fact that I may never have the chance to win.''

His chance came at the end of a history-making race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Kanaan knew he had to pounce at the green flag for the final restart with three laps to go. He did, zipping inside leader Ryan Hunter-Reay to roar to the lead - where he wanted to be in case another caution came out.

''I knew I had to get the lead on the restart because it could be a yellow, which happened to me plenty of times here, and it did,'' Kanaan said. ''How funny is life? The yellow was my best friend.''

Kanaan had his fair share of chances to win at Indy, but came up short time and time again. He was leading when the rain came in 2007, only to lose to Franchitti when the race resumed.

In all, Kanaan went into Sunday's race with 221 laps led at Indy - more than any non-winner except Michael Andretti and Rex Mays - but his second-place finish to Buddy Rice in 2004 was the closest he had come to victory. He had a pair of third-place finishes, including last year, again to Franchitti.

''It's wonderful for him,'' said Mario Andretti, himself a victim of bad luck at Indy. ''He's raced here long enough that he deserves it, no question.''

The win for Kanaan and car owner Vasser was celebrated throughout the paddock. Alex Zanardi, who came from Italy to watch the race and gave Kanaan one of his 2012 London Paralympics medals as good luck, wept behind the pit wall as Kanaan took the checkered flag.

''I tell you I'm starting to think (the medal) really works,'' said Zanardi, who lost his legs in a 2001 crash in Germany. ''It's a dream come true to see Tony win, to see Jimmy Vasser win, my dear friend. I'm so happy, I'm so happy.''

It was Vasser who brought Zanardi's medal to Kanaan before the race, telling his driver that Zanardi wanted him to rub it for good luck.

''I actually cuddled with the thing,'' Kanaan admitted.

Vasser, caught in the middle as a driver during the political fighting in open-wheel racing, only got the chance to run Indy eight times in his career and not during his prime. He had goose-bumps on the celebratory lap with Kanaan as the crowd chanted the driver's name.

''I never won it as a driver. In fact, I couldn't win it as a driver,'' Vasser said, ''so I had to hire the right guy to do it, get a baby Borg on my shelf,'' referring to the winner's Borg-Warner trophy.

It will be one adorned with Kanaan's likeness, and the driver joked he could finally ''put my big nose on that trophy.''

Fellow Brazilian Helio Castroneves, like Franchitti shooting for a record-tying fourth Indy win, was happy for his long-time friend.

''Finally he's able to win this race. He's so close so many times, but the good news is the good old boys are still able to run fast,'' Castroneves said.

Carlos Munoz, a 21-year-old rookie making his first IndyCar start, finished second and Hunter-Reay was third.

''T.K. is such a fan favorite, absolutely, it's great to see him win it. If anybody is going to win it in the field, he's one of the few I'd like to see other than myself,'' Hunter-Reay said. ''We were leading on that last restart, I knew I was a sitting duck, and I wasn't too bummed about it because I knew we had enough laps to get it going again and have a pass back. Maybe I would be third on the last lap, which is where I wanted to be.''

Only there was no racing on the last lap. Franchitti brought out the caution seconds after Kanaan passed Hunter-Reay for the last of 68 lead changes - exactly double last year's record.

On the final lap, the leaders came to the finish line all bunched up around Kanaan, saluting the IndyCar stalwart who had longed to add the final missing piece to his resume. That was about as slow as anyone had driven all day. The average speed was 187.433 mph, another Indy record.

Marco Andretti finished fourth, failing to win for the eighth time, and Justin Wilson was fifth in the highest-finishing Honda on a day that was dominated by Chevrolet. Castroneves was sixth. Pole-sitter Ed Carpenter led a race-high 37 laps and finished 10th.

For a time, it appeared the win would go to AJ Allmendinger, who led 23 laps in his Indy debut for Roger Penske.

Fired by Penske from his NASCAR ride last year after failing a NASCAR drug test, Penske gave him a second chance with this IndyCar opportunity. Seven years after leaving open-wheel racing, Allmendinger finally ran ''The Greatest Spectacle in Racing'' and was leading when his seat belt came undone, forcing him to pit.

It put Allmendinger off the pit cycle, and he was forced to stop for gas twice far in advance of the rest of the field. It meant Allmendinger had to drive his way back to the front each time, and he finally sputtered out at seventh.

''I'll be honest, pretty special moment to be leading at Indy,'' he said. ''My body kind of went numb, my mind was racing and I could feel my heart beating really fast, and that's a special moment I'll never forget.''

A year after 34 lead changes and a frantic finish created what many considered the best Indy ever, IndyCar had its hands full trying to top itself.

This one might have done it, with the slicing and dicing at the front, over and over and over again. The 68 lead changes involved 14 drivers, and 28 of the 33 cars were running at the end. With 100 miles to go, 25 drivers were on the lead lap.

''It was a hell of a race. That's all I can say,'' said Mario Andretti. ''This is riveting competition, that's all I can tell you. It's just amazing. The reliability of the cars is there. The product is there. It's unbelievable racing, the best I've seen in years.''

In his interview, Nusaybah said Adebolajo became withdrawn after returning from a visit to study in Kenya, where he claimed he had been physically and sexually abused in detention. Nusaybah also alleged that the U.K.'s security services tried to recruit Adebolajo after he returned to Britain.

Adebolajo and another man are suspected of killing 25-year-old soldier Lee Rigby, hacking at his body with knives and a meat cleaver, on a London street in front of dozens of passersby on Wednesday afternoon. Both suspects were shot by police at the scene and are hospitalized under guard in stable condition.

The BBC said Nusaybah was arrested by police outside its studios Friday night immediately after recording the interview.

"This interviewee had important background information that sheds light on this horrific event," the broadcaster said in a statement. "And when we asked him to appear and interviewed him, we were not aware he was wanted for questioning by the police."

Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 31-year-old man was arrested Friday night in London on suspicion of "the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism." He is in custody at a London police station, police said, adding that the arrest was not directly related to the killing of Rigby.

Nusaybah told the BBC that he believed Adebolajo changed after he was allegedly detained and abused by security forces in a Kenyan prison cell last year. After that, Adebolajo became "less talkative ... he wasn't his bubbly self," Nusaybah said.

He also said that Adebolajo told him that Britain's security service, the MI5, followed him upon his return to the U.K. to find out if he knew certain individuals and then to ask if he would work for the security service.

"He was explicit in that he refused to work for them," Nusaybah told the BBC. It was not immediately possible to verify the claims by Nusaybah.

Two Muslim hard-liners described Adebolajo as a recent convert to Islam.

Anjem Choudary, the former head of the radical group al-Muhajiroun, told The Associated Press that Adebolajo was a Christian who converted to Islam around 2003. He took part in several demonstrations by the group in London, Choudary said.

Omar Bakri Muhammad, who now lives in Lebanon but had been a radical Muslim preacher in London, said Adebolajo attended his London lectures in the early 2000s.

Police have not officially named the two suspects. British media has named the second suspect as Michael Adebowale; that was confirmed Saturday by a British government official who requested anonymity because she was not authorized to speak about the investigation.

The men, suspected of hacking the off-duty soldier to death while horrified bystanders watched, boasted of their exploits and warned of more violence in images recorded on witnesses' mobile phones. Holding bloody knives and a meat cleaver, they waited for the arrival of police, who shot them in the legs, according to a passerby who tried to save the dying soldier.

Prime Minister David Cameron vowed that Britain would not be cowed by the horrific violence, and that it would reject "the poisonous narrative of extremism on which this violence feeds." Indeed, there were few signs of alarm in the British capital, which has been hit by terrorist attacks during a long confrontation with the Irish Republican Army and more recently by al-Qaida-inspired attacks.

"It's hateful, it's horrific and upsetting. But it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference," Christian White, 43, said at King's Cross station, close to the site of a subway bomb in July 2005. "Londoners are used to living in a city where life is complicated."

Even so, security was increased at military barracks and installations in the capital, with extra armed guards added in many cases. Police said extra patrols were added at sensitive areas, including places of worship, transport hubs and congested areas.

Britain's Ministry of Defense said the soldier killed was Lee Rigby, of 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Rigby, a 25-year-old with a 2-year-old son, Jack, joined the army in 2006 and was posted first to Cyprus and later served in Afghanistan and Germany. He took up a recruiting post with the military in London in 2011.

Wednesday's attack took place near a military barracks in the Woolwich area of south London.

The scene was bizarre in a prosperous capital known for its decorum: A man hacked to death in mid-afternoon, lying on the ground dead as the two alleged assailants talked with shocked bystanders and tried to score propaganda points on video cameras while apparently waiting for a bloody confrontation with police.

There was little hard information available about the wounded suspects. Police gave no details of their injuries or conditions. They did confirm that the victim was a serving British soldier. His family has asked that his name not be immediately released.

Both suspects in the London attacks had been part of previous terror investigations by Britain's security services, according to a British official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the police inquiry and cautioned that details could jeopardize future trials.

It was unclear how recent the investigations were or whether the men were loosely tied to other suspects being investigated or whether they themselves had been put under surveillance, which could have included being watched by undercover investigators or having their phone calls and emails intercepted.

Dramatic video footage showed a black male animated, hands stained with blood and holding a meat cleaver criticizing the British government and the presence of U.K. troops in foreign lands.

Maajid Nawaz, a former Islamist now with the London-based Quilliam anti-extremism think tank in London, said the footage and details emerging indicated that the men had been inspired by al-Qaida even though they may not have been directed by any specific affiliate to attack the soldier.

"There is always mood music playing before these attacks happen," Nawaz told the AP. "In this instance, I'm not saying they are operationally linked to al-Qaida, but these men clearly felt an affinity to this global jihadist zeitgeist. And they wouldn't have had to have visited any foreign countries for this ideology to have resonated with them."

Security officials have been worried over the recent increase of men seeking training and fighting opportunities in countries such as Syria, Somalia and Yemen.

Dozens of British men and women are said to have been radicalized by U.S.-born militant cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, the militant leader who was killed in a 2011 U.S. drone strike in Yemen.

A Twitter account used by members of Somalia's al-Qaida linked terrorist group al-Shabab made a lengthy post Thursday about the attack in Woolwich.

The Twitter account referenced a video of the bloodied suspect calling the attack "an eye for an eye" for what it called the British army's "woeful record of abuses" against Muslims worldwide.

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you," the man in the video declared, complaining about British troops fighting Muslims. "We must fight them as they fight us."

The camera then panned away to show a body lying on the ground. This video, with its venomous threats, may provide the lasting image of the tragedy.

Police in the county of Lincolnshire in eastern England said a property was being searched in connection to the attack in Woolwich. Police said a search warrant had been obtained but would not provide details about the search. Police were also scouring the attack site for further clues.

There was also a police raid on a public housing complex in east Greenwich just outside of London thought to be related to the attack investigation.

Britain's security threat remained the same since Wednesday's attack, but security officials said they were reviewing preparations for next month's Group of Eight summit in Northern Ireland. President Barack Obama and other world leaders are expected to attend the meeting on June 17-18.

The incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon when officers responded to reports of an assault just a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich.

Fred Oyat, 44, who lives in a high-rise nearby, said he heard four gunshots and went straight to the window.

"I saw one man lying there bleeding, another lying on the pavement being disarmed. A policeman was pointing a gun at him. A third man was lying further up the street. ... He was bleeding profusely," Oyat said. "There were four knives on the ground big kitchen knives. The knives were very bloody."

Witnesses recounted seeing the suspects armed with meat cleavers and possibly a firearm rushing toward police when officers arrived on the scene. Police then opened fire.

Images from the scene showed a blue car that appeared to have been used in the attack, its hood crushed and rammed into a signpost on a sidewalk that was smeared with blood. A number of weapons including butchers' knives, a machete and a meat cleaver were strewn on the street.

The Associated Press examined the footage to verify its authenticity, cross-referencing images from the scene, aerial shots, the location of a car behind the alleged attacker and the appearance of a body and a car in the background. There was no immediate way for the AP to verify who the cameraman was.

Other images showed the second suspect clutching a long knife as he engaged in conversation with a woman who British media said tried to intervene to prevent further bloodshed.

The woman was identified as Ingrid Loyau-Kennett, 48, and said she confronted the attackers, telling them: "It is only you versus many people. You are going to lose."

Police defended the speed of the department's response to the attack.

In a statement, Assistant Commissioner Simon Byrne said police were on the scene nine minutes after receiving the first emergency call. Once it became clear that firearms were involved, firearms officers were called and arrived 14 minutes after the first call to police, he said.

Britain has been at the heart of several terror attacks or plots in recent years, the most deadly being the 2005 rush-hour suicide bombings when 52 commuters were killed. More recently, Parviz Khan was convicted in 2008 of plotting to kidnap and behead a British Muslim soldier in Birmingham.

Muslim religious groups and charities were quick to condemn the attack and urged police to calm tensions. The Muslim Council of Britain called it a "barbaric act that has no basis in Islam," adding that "no cause justifies this murder."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon on Thursday told Congress it expected a 1 percent drop in the cost of its biggest weapons program, the Lockheed Martin Corp.F-35 fighter jet, while averting the huge cost increases seen on other weapons programs in recent years.

The Defense Department's annual report to lawmakers showed a $40 billion, or 2.4 percent, cost increase in 78 major arms programs, mainly due to accounting changes and higher order quantities. But none of the cost increases were big enough to trigger the congressionally mandated live-or-die reviews that have been commonplace in recent years.

The cost of the developing and building the F-35, a new radar-evading fighter jet, is now projected at $391.2 billion, down from last year's estimate of $395.7 billion, according to the Pentagon's "selected acquisition report.

The report did not revise the projected $1.1 trillion cost of operating and maintaining the fleet of 2,443 new fighter jets over the next five decades, or the projected cost per flying hour, despite ongoing work by the F-35 program office and the main contractors to reduce those costs.

Lockheed is developing three models of the supersonic, single-seat F-35 fighter for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, as well as eight countries that are helping fund its development: Britain, Australia, Canada, Norway, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey. Israel and Japan have also placed orders for the new plane.

Current plans call for the U.S. military to buy a total of 2,443 F-35 jets in coming years, with its allies slated to buy 721 additional fighters, although many analysts believe mounting budget pressures could ultimately reduce the total purchase.

Lockheed, the Pentagon's largest supplier, said it would continue to work with defense officials to drive the cost of the F-35 program down even further.

"This is the first year a cost reduction was noted. We will work with the F-35 Joint Program Office to implement further cost saving measures which will result in additional significant decreases to the total program cost," said Lockheed spokesman Michael Rein.

The Pentagon report projected the total cost to develop, buy and operate the new fleet of F-35 fighter jets would be just over $1.50 trillion over the 50-year life of the program. That is down slightly from last year's estimate of $1.51 billion, reflecting the lower projected acquisition cost.

It said the average cost of the conventional F-35A model, excluding R&D costs, had dropped to $76.8 million per plane in 2012 dollars, compared with $78.7 million a year earlier.

Projected operating and maintenance costs, which include the cost of fuel, will be updated at a high-level meeting of U.S. defense officials this fall, according to an information guide released by the Pentagon's F-35 program.

The office noted that expected inflation in fuel costs, which account for 14 percent of the total operating cost estimate, would have a big impact. It assumes that fuel costs will rise to $8.04 per gallon, compared with $4.24 in 2012.

Measured in 2012 dollars, or excluding inflation, the program's total projected cost dropped $11.1 billion to $936.4 billion from $947.5 billion a year earlier.

The Pentagon report included updates on 77 other big weapons programs, including the Air Force's Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program, which buys launch services to lift U.S. military and intelligence satellites into orbit.

The report said the cost of the EELV program was expected to more than double, to $70.7 billion, because of a new plan to buy 60 additional launches and extend the schedule for launches through fiscal 2028.

United Launch Alliance, a joint venture run by Lockheed Martin and Boeing Co., currently provides the launch services to the Air Force. But the service is trying to open the launch program to competition from other companies, including privately owned Space Exploration Technologies.
