Pinch-hitter Russell Martin delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 14th to give the streaking Pirates their ninth straight win in dramatic fashion.

Pittsburgh trailed early and tied the game in the eighth where Andrew McCutchen had a run-scoring single.

Both teams used seven pitchers each in a duel that saw the Pirates (51-30) extend their lead to two games over St. Louis (49-32) in the National League Central.

The Cardinals could not keep pace as they lost to Oakland 7-5. Jed Lowrie hit a go-ahead home run to lead the Athletics and keep them just a half-game behind Texas for first in the AL West.

In Tampa Bay, the Detroit Tigers lost to the Rays 3-1 to fall into a virtual tie with Cleveland atop the AL Central.

Miguel Cabrera slugged his 25th home run of the season for Detroit, but that was the only blemish against Tampa Bay pitcher Jeremy Hellickson who won for the fifth time in the month of June.

The Tigers (43-37) now lead the Indians (44-38) by a mere percentage point. In Boston, the Red Sox beat Toronto 5-4 thanks to an error in the bottom of the ninth.

Josh Thole, making a rare fill-in appearance at first base for the Blue Jays, was unable to handle a ground ball from Shane Victorino that brought home the winning run in the final inning.

Jose Bautista went 3-for-5 with a home run, his third in two games, but it was not enough to halt the first-place Red Sox.

In Colorado, baseball's hottest hitter, Michael Cuddyer extended his hitting streak to 27 games in a 5-2 loss to San Francisco.

Cuddyer got his lone hit of the game in the eighth to keep his stretch alive while the Giants snapped a six-game losing streak.

The preparations take many forms: Prayers and vigils, pictures and candles, headlines and YouTube videos. All are measurements of his legend, and yet as the 94-year-old Mandela's hospitalization continues, the anticipation has left many caught in an awkward limbo, sharing on a global scale what is usually a private scenario.

There is no one in the world like Mandela a victim who both governed and forgave his tormentors, a figure so universally admired that his countless honors include both America's Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Soviet Union's Order of Lenin.

So as the days have passed since his hospitalization on June 8 the slow decline of a giant broadcast everywhere with the speed, detail and distortion that are hallmarks of the Internet age his vigil, too, has been unique.

The world is waiting to honor the man who proved the power of unity and forgiveness, said Lori Brown, a sociology professor at Meredith College in North Carolina.

"It is possible to honor him while he is alive, but the massive funeral, the media focus on his entire life, the showing of video clips of his speeches, the reading of his writings, these are all part of what we sociologists call rites of passage," she said.

"His death will allow for not only global grieving of his passing but a global celebration of his life," she said. "The world will own his memory, while right now his illness and life are more private and 'owned' by his family."

Everywhere, families know this type of personal experience. They grapple with the belief that the end is near and with reluctance to speak of it. They measure their respect for life against the desire for an incapacitated loved one to be freed from it.

Now this struggle is playing out for members of the world family who treasure Mandela's story.

"There's something very uncomfortable about the waiting," said Robert Kraft, a psychology professor at Otterbein University in Ohio and author of an upcoming book on South Africa.

Even thinking about "closure" at a moment like this, he said, "is extremely uncomfortable for someone we love."

Actor Dennis Haysbert, who portrayed Mandela in the film "Goodbye Bafana," has felt deep emotions since Mandela entered the hospital with what the South African government said was a lung infection.

"I am not waiting for his death. I am celebrating him as he lives," Haysbert said.

Still, it's hard to discuss. "We're still talking about a living, breathing human being, talking in anticipation of his demise, of his passing. That's hard, but I understand it. I understand the need to do it. It's a matter of preparation."

"I would imagine he's preparing himself," Haysbert continued. "And I think that everyone who loves him, who respects him, who truly honors him are preparing themselves for it."

Those preparations are most difficult and visible in South Africa, where Mandela led a peaceful transition from racist white rule to a democratically elected government, which he headed. There have been nationwide prayers, tokens of support left in makeshift shrines and throngs upon throngs of media.

Said Makaziwe Mandela, one of Mandela's daughters, of the media glare: "It's like truly vultures waiting when a lion has devoured a buffalo, waiting there for the last carcasses. That's the image that we have, as a family."

Later, Mandela's ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, said: "If we sometimes sound bitter, it is because we are dealing with a very difficult situation. You can understand our emotions."

The intense interest in Mandela's decline is due to his resonance around the world.

In Britain, the Archbishop of York issued a special prayer for Mandela.

A YouTube "Pledge for Peace: I Am Nelson Mandela" campaign inspired videos from Japan, Mexico, Russia, Australia, Italy, and India.

In Bangladesh, the popular actor Hasan Masood wrote on Facebook: "Nelson Mandela, please get well soon. May God give you the strength to come back."

A headline in a Malaysian newspaper read: "Everyone's Hero."

"I am very angry," said Mariana Alves in Madrid, who believes Mandela's illness stems from harsh treatment during his 27 years in prison. "But you have to admire that he was able to forgive those who treated him so badly and finally condemned him to die this way, breathless."

In Australia and the Netherlands, there were false reports of Mandela's death the latter prompting an Amsterdam neighborhood council to observe a minute of silence in his honor.

"I think we just have to leave him peacefully," said Ramesh Pasupuleti, parking his car in north London's Mandela Street, one of several so named. "If the time comes, the time comes. We are all grateful for what he has done."

People feel as if they know Mandela, said Kraft, the psychologist.

"He was not secretive. When he experienced joy he smiled, he danced, he hugged, he embraced. He put himself and his emotions out in public. We also saw his struggles," he said.

"I think he is one of the truly great people of the last 100 years. It's not as if a somewhat lesser person is dying, or a beloved celebrity is dying. We are aware that greatness is going to be gone," Kraft continued. "It's a little different than someone else who is simply well known and accomplished."

And when the end does come, whenever that may be, it too will be different.

"I don't think you can really prepare for it," said Haysbert, the actor. "What does that mean, you're not going to feel the emotion of it?"

"You're thinking that you prepared yourself for it until it happens," he said. "Then it just sort of smacks you."

LONDON (Reuters) - After a tumultuous first week when the shock Wimbledon defeats of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal upset the established order, Novak Djokovic was at his imperious best on Saturday to underline his claims to a second title.

Like a ruthless emperor dismissing an underling, top seed Djokovic brushed aside Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-3 6-2 6-2 with a powerful display that gave little indication he will be troubled en route to a possible 11th grand slam final.

Chardy, the 28th seed, put up little fight in the evening sunshine on Centre Court with the third round match wrapped up in 86 minutes.

Small consolation for Chardy came with the knowledge that he won one more game and lasted six more minutes than when they met in the first round in 2011, the year the Serb lifted his first grasscourt grand slam title.

Clinical Djokovic, is yet to drop a set, or his serve, in three one-sided contests so far. His all-court efficiency, serve and net dominance mixed with an array of laser-like forehand and backhand winners, were reflected by some eye-opening match statistics.

The Serb won 93 percent of first serve points, hit 38 winners and made just three unforced errors.

"That was incredible for me. I enjoyed every moment of it," Djokovic told reporters. "Everything went well. So when you play that well, obviously you feel great, you feel confident.

"My results are getting better and better, so this is very encouraging for the first week.

"Now every match I'm going to play, every opponent I'm going to face is going to be more difficult. I'm going to expect tough challenges... I'm ready for it."

BIG CHALLENGE

Djokovic's next opponent, evergreen Tommy Haas, should put up more resistance in the last 16.

German Haas surprisingly beat the Serb in straight sets at the Sony Open in Miami in March, although Djokovic took revenge in the quarter-finals of the French Open earlier this month.

"It's going to be a big challenge for both of us. I think it's his most preferred surface. He loves playing on grass. He had a few great wins," Djokovic said.

"I mean, he's 35 years old, and he's been playing very close to the best tennis of his life, in my opinion. He's very fit."

Six-times grand slam winner Djokovic, whose path to another final is likely to be blocked by fourth seed David Ferrer or Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro, said the early shocks had made the tournament more interesting.

French Open king and twice Wimbledon winner Nadal lost to Belgian Steve Darcis in the first round while holder and seven-times champion Federer was upset a round later by Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky.

"It is a surprise, there's no question about it," said Djokovic. "It's a bit strange feeling not to have Federer or Nadal at the second week of a major. In the last 10 years, it was always one of them.

"But it's the way it is. There's some players who have been playing great tennis. I think it's interesting also to see new faces for the crowd, for the tennis world in general."

Several progressive groups said it took more than a year for the IRS to approve their status while others are still waiting as IRS agents press for details about their activities. The delays have made it difficult for the groups to raise money just as it has for tea party groups that were singled out for extra scrutiny.

But even with the delays, leaders of some progressive groups said they didn't feel like they were being targeted.

"This is kind of what you expect. You expect it to take a year or more to get your status because that's just what the IRS goes through to do it," said Maryann Martindale, executive director of Alliance for a Better Utah, a small non-profit that advocates for progressive causes. "So I don't know that we feel particularly targeted."

The IRS has been under siege since the agency revealed last month that agents had improperly targeted tea party and other conservative groups for additional, often burdensome scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 elections.

This week, the IRS released documents showing that progressive and liberal groups may have been singled out as well.

On Wednesday, Nina Olson, the National Taxpayer Advocate, issued a report saying the IRS long has resisted efforts by her office to help groups seeking tax-exempt status, creating a culture that enabled agents to improperly target such organizations. The IRS responded by promising to work more closely with Olson's office.

J. Russell George, the agency's inspector general, released a widely-read report on the targeting of conservative groups last month. A day later President Barack Obama forced acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller to resign.

George is now coming under fire from congressional Democrats because his report made no mention of progressive groups being targeted.

"There is increasing evidence that the May 14, 2013, audit was fundamentally flawed and that your handling of it has failed to meet the necessary test of objectivity and forthrightness," Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan, the top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, wrote in a letter to George on Wednesday.

Karen Kraushaar, a spokeswoman for the inspector general, defended the audit.

The inspector general "was asked to look at the treatment of organizations known to be affiliated with the tea party in its review, and was asked to audit the way those organizations were being treated when they applied for tax-exempt status," Kraushaar said.

In a later interview, she said the audit focused on the criteria the IRS used to choose all applicants to examine for possible political activity which could affect their eligibility for tax-exempt status.

"Our audit found tea party organizations were being selected out for scrutiny," she said.

George's audit was requested by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House oversight committee, and Rep Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a senior member of the committee.

The IRS was screening the groups' applications because agents were trying to determine their level of political activity. IRS regulations say tax-exempt social welfare organizations may engage in some political activity but the activity may not be their primary mission.

To help flag groups for additional scrutiny, agents in a Cincinnati office developed lists of terms to look for in applications. These "be on the look-out" lists were commonly called BOLOs.

George's audit discovered a list from August 2010 that included the terms "Tea Party," ''Patriots" and "9/12 Project." The report said IRS agents inappropriately asked these conservative groups to identify their donors, their political affiliations and their positions on political issues, resulting in delays averaging nearing two years for applications to be processed.

Leaders of progressive groups said they, too, were asked detailed questions about their activities, which took time and resources to answer. But, several leaders said, they were not asked the inappropriate questions listed in the inspector general's report.

On Monday, Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee released 15 BOLO lists, which changed over time and were dated between August 2010 and April 2013. The lists included the terms "Progressive," ''Medical Marijuana," ''Occupied Territory Advocacy," ''Healthcare legislation," ''Newspaper Entities" and "Paying National Debt."

The revelation that such a wide array of groups may have received extra scrutiny is threatening to undercut the narrative of some Republican lawmakers that the IRS targeted enemies of the president during last year's presidential election.

Kraushaar, however, noted that the term "tea party" included instructions to forward such cases to other agents for additional review. There were no such instructions accompanying the term "Progressive," she said.

"So what if anything was done with this progressive BOLO, I don't know. We don't know that," Kraushaar said.

The new acting commissioner of the IRS, Danny Werfel, said he has ordered agents to stop using all BOLO lists.

James Salt, executive director of the liberal group, Catholics United, said it took a total of seven years for his group to get tax-exempt status under section 501 (c) (3) of the tax code. The designation is more valuable than the one for social welfare groups because donations to these groups are tax-deductible. However, there are greater restrictions on political activity.

Salt said Catholics United first applied in 2005 but eventually withdrew its application after an extensive back-and-forth with the IRS. The group applied again in April 2010 and was approved in July 2011, he said.

Salt said the most onerous question from the IRS was for copies of all information the group planned to disseminate to the public.

"It's almost impossible to know what we will do," Salt said. "It didn't make any sense. How can we answer that?"

One IRS agent also asked some "weird" questions, he said.

"The nature of her questions were, questioning why Catholics would care about immigration and why Catholics would care about supporting the rights of immigrants," Salt said. "It almost seemed like there was suspicion that promoting Catholic social teaching as it relates to immigration reform was somehow suspect."

Sean Soendker Nicholson, executive director of Progress Missouri, said it took about 14 months for the IRS to approve his group's tax-exempt status, in December 2012. He said the IRS asked a lot of questions about the group's activities.

"It took a long time. We didn't think much of it," Nicholson said. "What I thought at the time was, there's a lot of new groups that have popped up in the election cycle and it's a good thing the IRS is scrutinizing these applications."

Kinley Adams, 59, of Salem, has been missing since Saturday. Since then, search and rescue crews have been persistently thwarted by white-out conditions, and the skies were not expected to clear until Thursday.

Thick fog delayed the start of Wednesday's search until late morning. The dangerous conditions kept crews searching canyons near the timberline, away from the higher elevations where they believe Adams is likely to be found. An Oregon National Guard helicopter was on standby.

"The big break will be if we can get enough visibility to get aircraft up and do a visual search of the upper mountain," said Mark Morford, a spokesman for Portland Mountain Rescue, one of the volunteer organizations helping the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Morford said a reconnaissance team joined searchers Wednesday, assessing whether the avalanche threat has diminished enough to put searchers on the snow at higher elevations.

"Quite a few slides have been noticed, so that's probably our biggest risk right now," he said.

Adams, a dentist, is an experienced climber who has scaled numerous peaks since the 1970s. His family and search crews said that gives them hope he is alive in a snow cave, waiting for help. In March, injured Mount Hood hiker Mary Owen survived six days in a hand-carved snow cave before her rescue.

"He knows how to survive," Adams' wife, Lorraine, told reporters earlier this week. Said Morford, "We still look at this as a rescue, you bet."

Adams has recently been making frequent visits to Mount Hood in preparation for a climbing trip to Nepal. He was due home Saturday afternoon and his family called for help at 9 p.m. His vehicle was found on the mountain at Timberline Lodge.

Fifty miles east of Portland, Mount Hood is a popular climbing site that has seen dozens of accidents and fatalities. Thousands climb the 11,239-foot peak each year, mostly in the spring. Summer can be a risky time to climb because warmer temperatures melt the ice and loosen rocks.

Gregory Roseman said at a committee hearing Wednesday that he was advised by his lawyer to invoke his constitutional right against self-incrimination.

The committee is investigating government contracts secured by Strong Castle Inc., including whether a friendship between Roseman and company CEO Braulio Castillo was a factor in the company's ability to secure such large contracts with the IRS.

Castillo told the committee he doesn't know why Roseman invoked his 5th Amendment right. Castillo says his company has done nothing wrong or illegal.

But due to the "complexity and length of the appeals process," Reuters reports, they will likely not serve any of their one-year-and-eight-month sentence, although that really would be something.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Morgan Stanleyis expected to report bond-trading revenue below the target the Wall Street bank set after its disappointing first-quarter results, an analyst said on Wednesday.

Morgan Stanley will report $1.25 billion in fixed income, currency and commodities (FICC) trading revenue for the second quarter, below the target of $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion the bank recently outlined as necessary to meet its cost of capital, said Richard Staite, an analyst with Atlantic Securities.

The bank has been providing more details about its bond-trading ambitions after disappointing first-quarter FICC revenue caused its shares to drop more than 5 percent on April 18.

Its stock recovered within days, after bank executives told investors, analysts and reporters that the quarter's $1.5 billion in bond-trading revenue was the minimum needed to meet cost of capital, represented by a 10 percent return on equity.

Morgan Stanley has been changing its bond-trading strategy for years, and performance has been rocky. The bank is now in the process of reducing risk-weighted assets by $190 billion - with another $53 billion left to go before the end of 2016 - in response to more stringent capital rules.

As a result, Morgan Stanley no longer has aspirations to have a bond-trading business as large as peers such as JPMorgan Chase & Coand Goldman Sachs Group Inc .

But bank officials argue that shrinking the business will allow it to be profitable. At a conference earlier this month, Chief Executive James Gorman detailed plans to double or triple returns in some areas.

"We fully recognize we are not where we want to be with fixed income and commodities," Gorman said. "On the other hand, we think we've made more progress than perhaps has been understood. But this is a multiyear transformation of a very complex business."

Morgan Stanley shares are up 31 percent this year, making it one of the best performing large bank stocks of 2013. But Staite's report may raise doubts. The analyst estimates Morgan Stanley's return on tangible common equity will be just 6.1 percent in the second quarter.

He said Morgan Stanley "is overvalued, given our view that profitability will remain disappointing."

A Morgan Stanley spokesman declined to comment on the analyst's report but pointed to Gorman's comments earlier this month.
