Top McAfee official named to U.S. Homela

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior executive with Intel Corp's McAfee anti-virus software division was named the top cyber official at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security - filling a position that has turned over a couple of times this year.

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano on Monday named Phyllis Schneck the new deputy undersecretary for cybersecurity in the department's National Protection and Programs Directorate.

Schneck, chief technology officer for McAfee's global public sector unit, has worked in security and infrastructure protection for more than 14 years. She is the chairman of the board of directors of the National Cyber Forensics and Training Alliance - a partnership between corporations, government and law enforcement to combat international cyber crime.

"McAfee takes great pride in the strong partnership we have with the U.S. government, and governments around the world," McAfee President Michael DeCesare said in a statement. "Phyllis has long been a trusted and valued member of the McAfee team who has helped build these partnerships."

DHS has pinpointed cybersecurity as a top priority in recent years, but the department has had a hard time keeping the top cyber job filled since it was created in 2011.

Mark Weatherford, the first person to hold the post, quit earlier this year after less than 18 months in the job to join the Chertoff Group, a security advisory firm.

Bruce McConnell, Weatherford's deputy who was acting interim cyber chief, announced his plans to step down last month.

DHS has urged Congress to pass new cybersecurity legislation to spell out how the government and industry should work together to protect critical infrastructure against a growing threat of cyber attacks.

(Reporting by Deborah Charles; Editing by Leslie Gevirtz)

http://friendfeed.com/nnytdeh/e450b4b7/book-of-famous-inspirational-quotes-ebook
http://en.netlog.com/sterlingplourde/blog/blogid=27896534
http://shaunaiypmia.webs.com/apps/blog/show/31708675
http://ardellemet.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/08/04/Savory-Bites%3A-Meals-You-Can-Make-in-Your-Cupcake-Pan-downloads
http://en.netlog.com/tanishamachen/blog/blogid=27896544
http://mmdicnps.blogdetik.com/2013/08/01/hard-knocks-online/
http://qqmacfnu.blogdetik.com/2013/08/02/gold-leaf-application-and-antique-restoration-schiffer-book-for-woodworkers-e-book-downloads/
http://kermitor.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/08/04/Downloads-The-Cleaners%3A-Absent-Bodies-e-book
http://omrariwu.jimdo.com/2013/08/04/the-box-of-daughter-download/
http://ebdveapt.metroblog.com/john_deere_landscaping_lawn_care_the_complete_guide_to_a_beautiful_yard_year_round_download

Time Warner Cable offers antennas during

(Reuters) - Time Warner Cable Inc is offering free antennas to help customers watch CBS via broadcast signals during a blackout that is in its third week, the cable operator said on Friday.

During the blackout, more than 3 million Time Warner Cable customers in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Dallas have been unable to watch CBS, and the companies have been unable to reach a new programming deal since their agreement expired in June.

The cable company notified customers on its website and by email that they could ask for basic indoor antennas at their local Time Warner Cable store. It also offered a $20 voucher for customers who want to buy antennas at Best Buy Co Inc.

"All blacked-out broadcast stations remain available over the air, and most households can receive the signals if they have the right equipment," the cable company said.

It also offered Amazon gift cards so customers can watch CBS programs, using Amazon's Internet streaming service.

CBS declined to comment on the offers.

CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves said Thursday that both sides continued to negotiate but that no resolution was in sight. Most analysts expect the two parties to reach a deal by the time the National Football League season kicks off in September.

(Reporting by Liana B.
Kiwi teen Ko defends Canadian Women's Op

Lydia Ko, a 16-year-old New Zealand amateur, defends her title at the LPGA Canadian Women's Open starting Thursday at Edmonton's Royal Mayfair after a historic triumph a year ago.

Ko became the youngest winner in LPGA history last year at 15 years and four months of age when she captured the crown in Vancouver. This season, Ko has played in nine prior LPGA events, including four majors.

"It was a huge surprise, but now when I look back at it, it was a really big week in my life," Ko said.

"I have really been enjoying the last year. I have been getting a whole new experience. I've been getting a feel for all these different types of golf courses in different countries and situations. It doesn't feel like I've played 10 already, but it has been really cool to have that opportunity to play this many."

All but one of the players in last week's Solheim Cup will be playing this week, with Sweden's Caroline Hedwall entered after becoming the first player to go 5-0 in a Solheim Cup in helping Europe defeat the US women 18-10, including sinking the Cup-clinching putt.

England's Charley Hull, a 17-year-old who went 2-1 for Europe, has four runner-up showings in nine Ladies European Tour starts and will play on a sponsor exemption, giving Ko a run for the money as top teen.

"She obviously proved herself out there last week and she's a really great player," Ko said. "It kind of makes me feel better seeing that I'm not the (only) young one, so that feels good."

Missing out on the money she could earn as a tour player does not weigh on Ko's mind.

"I don't really think about money. It's not like I count how much I'm (potentially) earning each week," Ko said. "I just hit the ball. My parents are the ones that are thinking about money and expenses."

Ko is still pondering college options and when to turn professional, but nothing has been decided on either matter.

She took a putting lesson on Sunday from world number one Park In-Bee of South Korea.

"I was putting and then she came along and did some putting as well," Ko said. "I didn't ask her any questions, but I stopped and then looked at how the world number one putts."

This year, she has putted very well. Park seeks her seventh title of the year this week, having won three major titles and leading the LPGA money list with $2,147,619.

Park returns after some time off in South Korea, including time spent with a seriously ill child whose dream was to play golf alongside Park.

"One of the kids' wishes was playing golf with me, so I did their wish and spent some time with them," Park said.

"When I was in Korea I obviously met up with my family and friends. I did some stuff for sponsors. Everything kept me really busy. I really enjoyed my time there. I feel like I'm more refreshed, feel like I'm ready to go again."

Park finished second to Ko last year, even though she collected a winner's check because Ko was an amateur.

"I could give her advice, but I don't think she really needs advice. She's a very talented player," Park said.

"It would be nice if I could actually get the trophy and the first-place check this time. I'll try my best this week and just see what happens."

Park said she feels more relaxed after her Asian trip and after her quest for a major sweep was scuttled when she failed at the Women's British Open.

"I'm a lot more relaxed now," Park said. "I experienced some big pressure in British Open. That week was big, and it could have been great if I could have played a little bit better, but some weeks you don't play your best. But I had a great experience there so I think that experience will help me throughout this season and my career."

http://friendfeed.com/kropr/864e907a/downloads-taoism-book
http://vergienul.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/08/10/Download-I-Love-Cross-Stitch-Alphabet-Collection%3A-9-Alphabets-for-Personalized-Designs
http://esterbm.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/08/10/Reinventing-the-Wheel-%28A-Winterhouse-book%29-downloads
http://en.netlog.com/parkercuster/blog/blogid=28209576
http://friendfeed.com/kduvc/0d68416e/download-building-soils-for-better-crops
http://melonyiu.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/08/10/PK-AVANCE-SE-/CNCTLRN-e-book
http://blogs.rediff.com/melvinaef/2013/08/11/download-the-ex-mrs-hedgefund-a-novel-e-book/
http://ufhecant.1toxic.com/The-first-blog-b1/The-2009-Import-and-Export-Market-for-Parts-of-Railway-or-Tramway-Locomotives-Rolling-Stock-Railway-Vehicles-Coaches-Vans-Trucks-and-Service-Vehicles-in-Europe-b1-p121.htm
http://avhomuqu.jimdo.com/2013/08/10/downloads-the-gentleman-s-bedside-companion-a-compendium-of-manly-information-for-the-last-fifteen-minutes-of-the-day/
http://nitrcuba.blogdetik.com/2013/08/09/downloads-the-beauty-within-e-book/
http://urjaduwa.wordpress.com/2013/08/10/downloads-mechanizing-hypothesis-formation-mathematical-foundations-for-a-general-theory/

How the Recession Made Mom a Harsher Par

During the recent recession, increased economic instability may have caused American mothers particularly those with a gene variation that makes them more sensitive to changes in their environment to engage in harsher parenting practices, a new study finds.

Researchers found that fluctuations in the levels ofin U.S. cities were associated with increases in severe forms of parenting, including shouting at or spanking children.

"It's commonly thought that economic hardship within families leads to stress, which, in turn, leads to deterioration of parenting quality," study lead author Dohoon Lee, an assistant professor of sociology at New York University, said in a statement. "But these findings show that an economic downturn in the larger community can adversely affect parenting regardless of the conditions individual families face." []

The researchers found that mothers were affected not only by high unemployment rates, but also by the uncertainty of changing unemployment rates, coupled with wavering consumer confidence throughout the recession.

"We thought we would see that as , we see more harsh parenting," said study co-author Sara McLanahan, a professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton University. "But we saw harsh parenting early in the recession, right at the time the stock market was crashing, and then it declined. That was a puzzle, and it was then that we got the idea to look at the rate of change in the economy, not just unemployment."

In the genes?

The study also identified a possible genetic basis for the parenting changes. The economic downturn was linked to harsher parenting only in mothers with a variation in a gene called DRD2 Taq1A, which controls the production of dopamine, a behavior-regulating chemical in the brain.

Dopamine is sometimes referred to as the , but the neurotransmitter is also thought to regulate tension and aggression, McLanahan said. The researchers noticed a trend among mothers with this specific gene variant, which made up about half of the mothers studied.

"Mothers who didn't have this gene variation didn't react the same way," McLanahan told LiveScience. The findings also showed that mothers with the gene variant tended to be less harsh when the economy was doing well, which indicates they have a heightened sensitivity to changes in their environment.

The researchers used data from the ongoing Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, which follows nearly 5,000 children born in 20 U.S. cities between 1998 and 2000, and is being led by scientists at Princeton University and Columbia University.

Following families

In the Fragile Families study, mothers were interviewed shortly after giving birth, and again when their children were approximately 1, 3, 5 and 9 years old. DNA from saliva samples were also collected from 2,600 mothers and children in the ninth year of the study.

Harsh parenting was measured on a scale commonly used in psychology, which identifies five types of psychological , such as shouts or threats, and five types of corporal punishment, such as spanking or slapping.

In their analysis, the researchers controlled for a number of variables that may affect parenting, including mothers' age, race and level of education as well as the child's gender and age.

The new research suggests changes in the environment, such as widespread economic uncertainty, may affect people differently, based on their genetic makeup.

The detailed findings of the study were published online today (Aug. 5) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Follow Denise Chow on Twitter .
U.S. judge approves Kodak plan to exit b

By Nick Brown

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Eastman Kodak Co, once a mighty photography pioneer, earned court approval on Tuesday for a plan to emerge from bankruptcy as a much smaller digital-imaging company.

The green light from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper in New York puts Kodak on track to exit bankruptcy in about two weeks.

"It will be enormously valuable for the company to get out of Chapter 11 and hopefully begin to regain its position in the pantheon of American business," Gropper said.

Kodak, based in Rochester, New York, was for years synonymous with household cameras and family snapshots. It filed a $6.75 billion bankruptcy in January 2012, weighed down by high pension costs and a years-long delay in embracing digital camera technology.

With the court approval, the company's exit from bankruptcy is now imminent, Chief Executive Antonio Perez said in a statement.

"Next, we move on to emergence as a technology leader serving large and growing commercial imaging markets," he said, adding the company will have a leaner structure and a stronger balance sheet.

It has sold off assets, including its consumer-focused operations, and will emerge from Chapter 11 to focus mainly on commercial products such as high-speed digital printing technology and flexible packaging for consumer goods.

Its new structure will mean a lower public profile for Kodak's iconic name and its expected revenues, about $2.5 billion, are roughly half of what it had when it filed for Chapter 11.

In bankruptcy, Kodak failed to obtain significant value for its portfolio of patents, which experts said was a crucial reason it had to sell core businesses and reinvent itself. But the bankruptcy resolved a major dispute with retirees over pensions, and it has forged a restructuring plan that, while wiping out shareholders, should pay secured creditors and second-lien noteholders in full.

General unsecured creditors are likely to receive a marginal payout in the neighborhood of 4 cents to 5 cents on the dollar.

"This comes on a day when many are losing retirement benefits, and many are finding that their recovery as a creditor is just a minute fraction of what their debt is," Gropper said. "But I cannot decree a larger payment for creditors or any payment for shareholders if the value is not there."

Kodak plans to emerge from bankruptcy as early as September 3, its attorney, Andrew Dietderich, said at a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York.

THE FALL OF THE MIGHTY

Kodak's bankruptcy capped a protracted plunge for the company, which was founded in 1880 by George Eastman, the inventor of the hand-held camera and rolled photographic film. Kodak's market value topped $31 billion in the mid-1990s.

When it filed for bankruptcy, it hoped to fetch more than $2 billion for about 1,100 patents related to digital imaging. But due in part to losses in high-profile patent litigation with Apple Inc, the company was only able to sell the portfolio for about $525 million to a consortium led by Intellectual Ventures and RPX Corp.

The company sought other ways to save money. In April, it resolved a crucial dispute with its British pension, which dropped a $2.8 billion claim against Kodak while buying the company's personalized imaging and document imaging businesses for $650 million.

The company reached an $895 million financing deal in June with JPMorgan Chase & Co, Bank of America Corp and Barclays Plc. It also plans a $406 million rights offering, selling 34 million shares, or 85 percent of the equity in the reorganized company, with proceeds going to creditors.

Shareholders fought to salvage some value from the bankruptcy, including at Tuesday's hearing, saying Kodak was undervaluing its reorganized entity. But Gropper repeatedly denied their efforts to form a committee to represent their interests, saying it was clear there would be no value for them.

Gropper's patience ran out however when he admonished one shareholder for asking what he felt were overly broad questions of Kodak executives about their methodology for the company's valuation. The Canadian shareholder spent close to an hour at the podium.

Cross-examination questions must be narrowly focused, Gropper said.

"It's like that in Canada too, yes?" said the judge, raising his voice.

Gropper later admitted he'd "been a bit impatient" with some stakeholders, calling Kodak's collapse a "tragedy of American economic life."

The case is In re: Eastman Kodak Co, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-10202.

(Reporting by Nick Brown; Editing by Eddie Evans, Andre Grenon and Leslie Gevirtz)

http://emogeneocrmu.webs.com/apps/blog/show/31105634
http://blogs.rediff.com/yettacyui/2013/07/27/downloads-handley-cross-or-the-spa-hunt-a-sporting-tale-ebook/
http://friendfeed.com/nnytdeh/a4dee5be/downloads-georgia-ghsgt-mathematics-3rd-ed
http://en.netlog.com/mirnacollis/blog/blogid=27467573
http://friendfeed.com/uiafnab/c791a547/downloads-spread-spectrum-cdma-systems-for
http://twitpic.com/d4yyhw
http://miquelyubad.webs.com/apps/blog/show/31105661
http://idvanej.jimdo.com/2013/07/27/an-introduction-to-the-international-criminal-court-book/
http://hkisazoys.blogdetik.com/2013/07/25/downloads-transcultural-health-care-a-culturally-competent-approach/
http://friendfeed.com/audzpco/0a125685/golden-triangle-inside-southeast-asia-drug
http://adriennenuesic.webs.com/apps/blog/show/31105664
http://kristanepq.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/07/27/The-2011-World-Market-Forecasts-for-Imported-Motorcycles-with-Reciprocating-Internal-Combustion-Piston-Engines-of-Cylinder-Capacity-between-500-and-800-cc-ebook-downloads
http://reichemisas.edublogs.org/2013/07/27/downloads-plan-and-prep-surviving-the-zombie-apocalypse-e-book/
http://itcesuxu.jimdo.com/2013/07/27/the-2009-2014-world-outlook-for-manufacturing-computer-peripheral-equipment-excluding-storage-devices-and-computer-terminals-book-downloads/
http://jonnykejad.edublogs.org/2013/07/27/the-emperor-of-portland-read-online/
http://orkesoc.livejournal.com/8769.html
http://en.netlog.com/casandraerving/blog/blogid=27467589
http://znudufqd.blogdetik.com/2013/07/25/ground-turkey-lovers-cookbook-e-book/

How Long until We Have the Superhuman Ex

In the world of 2154 the divide between rich and poor has been actualized in spaceliterally. In the ultimate gated community the wealthy and powerful shelter on a ring-world space station dubbed Elysium, enjoying the best in health care, among other perks, as everyone else suffers below on the . Protecting that privilege requires sometimes superhuman abilitieshence the use of special exoskeleton strength suits that enhance fight or flight.

Such is the world ofin the new film by Neill Blomkamp, whose last sci-fi jaunt, District 9, featured aliens stranded and sequestered in South Africa. For this film opening on August 9, the director dreamed up a lush life built in space against the challenges of gravity for construction and permanent habitation as well as the exoskeletons, although there is little indication of how such strength suits might work.

Given thatas well as thought-controlled drones and prosthetic limbs already exist, askedof the University of Arizona whether the kind of machine-enhanced human abilities in Elysium are likely anytime soon.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

How close to reality are brain-connected exoskeletons?

The exoskeletons we have today are rather primitive. Raytheon's amplifies the muscle movements of a person and allows that person to lift 500 pounds of weight as if it felt like 10 pounds. Yet, it doesn't tie into the brain. Theis very slow. It allows you to lift a very heavy weight but it's not faster than a human. You move your arm and then it responds to that movement. That's really going to slow it down.

There are exoskeletons designed to help the paralyzed walk but they don't interface with the brain or spinal cord. There's a huge amount of research in this area of . You will see that in the field in hospitals in the next 20 or 30 years. It's an advance over the wheelchair but it's nowhere near the technology in the movie. That is going to give someone who is not able to walk the ability to walk, not the ability to leap over 15-foot walls.

Matt Damon's character has something screwed into the back of his head and, my bet is, something screwed into the spinal cord as well. Motor control is actually in the spinal cord. If you have that kind of interface to the brain and spinal cord you could get superhuman reflexes. The technology to do that doesn't really exist today. It's not even up to thelevel.

What else might such exoskeletons allow us to do?

They might actually affect the aged population a lot. My parents are in their 80s and can't get around as well. I can imagine someone like my mom, who occasionally uses a walker, wearing one to get around with the tiniest amount of muscle power. If you wear an , maybe you can lift 100 poundsmore than you could when you were 20. It's a huge difference in mobility and independence. It might even work around something like Parkinson's disease. You can train the exoskeleton to ignore the tremors.

How long until we see this kind of thing?

There are two missing pieces: One is a long-term interface to the brain and . We can put electrodes in the brain but we have yet to make them last more than a few years. A brain has this way of insulating things stuck in it, which is a good thing. Second, we just don't know enough about what the brain and spinal cord are doing to make this exoskeleton. If it's 2154, there's a chance we might have figured that out; 2054, I think not.

Another problem with the exoskeleton is power. Our bodies are really power efficient. When we walk we use very little powerwe just fall from step to step and the Achilles tendon picks up some of that force and pushes us forward. We can walk for miles and miles. The Raytheon exoskeleton has this big tether coming off the back of it because it consumes a tremendous amount of energy. The . Nuclear engineers have a nuclear power supply that is very small that could power something like [Elysium's] exoskeleton for 100 years, but if you ever breach it, you have a serious nuclear emergency.

But you've already wired together insects and robots?

I build hybrid robots that involve insect brains. Interfacing insects to robots . They're cheap, and it's easy for me to get them. My first experiment was taking a hawk moth [and] putting an electrode in its brain neuron that looked for left and right motion. You could make a robot turn left or right depending on the hawk moth. It was just to show it could be done, but it turned out to be pretty difficult to do.

Then there's dragonflies. Dragonflies are awfully good at detecting small, moving targets. They live for several years as aquatic organisms and come out as adults for only eight to 12 weeks. All they care about is finding food and mating. They are . They are looking for other flying objects and they either want to eat it or mate with it. You can use them as a living visual sensor and guide our robots to a small, moving target.

I'm taking a praying mantis and giving it a body that's much bigger than its own and the ability to control that body. It's like giving it a massively large exoskeleton to see whether it can learn to control it. Flight behavior is relatively simple. I'm interested in the praying mantis because it has very complex walking behavior and I want to see if it can .

What applications do you foresee?

Brain tissue is really good at some things that regular computers are not. Processing sensory info is a good example. We are not able to build visual sensors as good at detecting small moving objects as dragonflies and certainly not with that level of power consumption. So what if you genetically engineer a living visual system and slap it on to a robot? Then you have the best of both worlds: high speed silicon-based processing and neural processing that does what it does best. Take the hawk moth. They can be trained to detect explosivesthey can smell them. You hook into the olfactory system of the hawk moth and build a bomb-sniffing robot that has the drive electronics of a regular robot and the nose of a hawk moth. Or take a dragonfly and use its visual system. It's having a robot that has the intelligence of a dragonfly; it can avoid obstacles and fly around.

It is dead cheap compared to electronics, but they die, so you have to replace them periodically. There is the potential for reconnaissance that we are not able to do right now. That's what I'm being funded to work on for the . You don't have to send a Marine over the hill, but unarmed drones. If at least one gets back, we've got the reconnaissance data and we didn't lose a human.

Or it could fly along in advance of the convoy looking at the road and . When it detects one, maybe they just fly into it and blow it up. I'm fine with that as long as they're cheap enough. We need to have that rather than a Humvee runs over the IED and we have Marines killed. That's something you should be seeing in the next few years.

How could that insectrobot hybrid work be scaled up to humans?

The hybrid there is to connect the brain, spinal cord and existingand use all that information to guide a robot system. For example, there are electrodes implanted in the pectoral muscles of the chest that connect to a robotic limb. You can use the pectoral muscles to control the robotic arm with pretty good facility.

In 50 to 75 years if you're going to be a high-end fighter pilot, you will have a neural implant that connects directly to the aircraft. Rather than using your limbs to control the fighter you will control it directly with your brain. That will give you reflexes that are superhuman. Once you can do that, it's not that big a deal to connect to an exoskeleton.

Is it more likely we'll just have robots fight for us?

That depends: When will we be able to build a machine that is as intelligent as a human? When can we send a robot to Elysium and have it do the task that Matt Damon does in this movie? A truly intelligent robot, one as intelligent as a human beingwe are a very long way off of that. We are really clueless about .

Even in insect brains we have no clue about the basis of decision-making. In humans it is so complex. So maybe focus on how insects make decisions. Maybe it's a scaled down version of how a rat does it, so scale it up to a rat, then a cat. But then humans, with language, have extra tricks.

For the foreseeable future, even in 2254, you're going to want a human being in the decision loop. So you will augment a human being rather than create a truly autonomous device.

I can tell you for a fact that the U.S. military leadership is very interested in keeping humans in the loop. The military has access tothat they don't want to use. They are actually very conservative and concerned about things like civilian casualties. They want a human to decide every time a trigger is pulled. Humans make mistakes, too, but they can be forgiven. When an artificial device makes a deadly mistake, it cannot be forgiven. They have to be utterly reliable.

Followon Twitterand .

Visitfor the latest in science, health and technology news.

 2013 .
Dirt: Correcting a Climate-Model Missing

Will Wieder is a postdoctoral researcher at NCAR who studies how information about microbes can impact climate models. This piece is adapted from a post on the blog of Alan Townsend's laboratory at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Wieder contributed this article to LiveScience's .

As a kid, my dad told me that every business was a dirt business. This wisdom came from my father's experience as a small business owner of a sprinkler and landscaping company.

This wisdom also provided great motivation to work hard in school and pursue an academic career. Who wants to go into a dirt business? Now, it turns out my dad was right he could have been talking about the latest piece in understanding what Earth'ssystem may look like for generations to come.

Soils store carbon lots of carbon far more than all of the plants on Earth and the entire atmosphere combined. So the impact of that huge soil-carbon pool matters a lot to projections of what our climate may look like in the future.

While my decision to go to graduate school could be boiled down to another attempt to avoid going into the dirt business, I ended up spending months in amazing forests in Costa Rica bringing red tropical dirt back to the University of Colorado, Boulder, as part of my graduate work in the laboratory of ecology and evolutionary biology professor Alan Townsend. Great gig. Still a dirt business.

A cleaner option presented itself when I ended up in a postdoctoral position at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (). There is not much dirt in the atmosphere, and little need to travel to distant lands. I traded the dirt on my hands for a keyboard, a monitor and a wholly new challenge: trying to model the world.

NCAR builds and maintains anthat is used to ask a variety of scientific and societally relevant questions among them, how to make projections about what the world's climate may look like a century from now.

Predicting the future is a daunting task, and one that requires we attempt to represent a host of processes that make our virtual planet uniquely Earth-like. From wind and waves to clouds and trees, there is a lot of physics, chemistry and biology that goes into computer simulations of our world past, present and future.

As a result, the Earth-system model incorporates many processes in general terms, with an implicit representation of the complexity inherent in any natural system. This general representation of complex processes allows us to do a pretty good job making a computer model of a planet that looks like Earth, as scientists currently know it.

The challenge, however, is that we scientists are trying to project Earth as we don't know it. Over the past decade, several studies have highlighted that the one of greatest areas of uncertainty in our computer models comes from the response ofsystems to projected environmental change. In particular, there's a growing chorus calling for models that explicitly represent microbial activity.

And so, I discovered that even climate modeling would throw me back into the dirt business.

As I learned from childhood through graduate studies, soils are amazingly complex, diverse systems they are a fascinating business. A spoonful of soil from your garden has as many microbes living in it as there are people on Earth. Due to that complexity, many soil processes are simulated implicitly, not explicitly, in Earth-system models.

[ ]

This means models need to explicitly consider the billions of bacteria and fungi living in a spoonful of soil, because these are the organisms chewing on soil carbon. These are the organisms one generally cannot see, but that can either help store carbon in soils or send it into the atmosphere, where it contributes to climate change. And scientists need to start thinking about the activity of those microbes around the globe.

This is no small task. It presents a huge challenge to soil-science and Earth-system modeling communities to think about what soils do from microbial to global scales. In a paper recently published in the journal , my colleagues and I present a framework for how scientists can begin bridging those scales. We showed that explicit representation of microbial activity is possible at global scales. And we highlighted how doing so radically changes predictions about soil carbon responses to.

So what comes next? The research community tests the model some more, and compares it with observational data from the real world; we learn what the new model can't do very well, and try to improve it; and we try to bring modeling tools into alignment with our theoretical and observationally based understanding of soil systems.

And, I finally admit that my dad was right.

This article is based on , which appeared on the of University of Colorado researcher Alan Townsend.
Prince William describes his joy at pare

LONDON (AP) His newborn son is "a little bit of a rascal" and car seats can daunt any dad, Britain's Prince William says.

The second in line to the British throne has described his joy at introducing his son to the world on the steps of a London hospital last month and about his nerves over fitting the car seat securely into the Land Rover before driving off.

William told CNN in his first interview since Prince George's birth on July 22 that both he and the Duchess of Cambridge couldn't wait to show off their son when they emerged from St. Mary's Hospital to meet the world's media a day later.

"I'm just glad he wasn't screaming his head off the whole way through," he said in an interview broadcast Monday.

William was quizzed on a range of child-rearing topics from baby toys to diapers and sleep deprivation and acknowledged that his expert performance sliding his child's car seat into the back of the royal four-wheel drive was a well-drilled exercise.

"Believe me, it wasn't my first time. And I know there's been speculation about that. I had to practice, I really did," he said.

William and his wife's assured, do-it-yourself performance in front of the hospital helped cement the couple's image as the modern face of Britain's monarchy. But William said the decision to take his own baby in hand and drive home in the glare of the international press was a way of establishing his independence.

"I very much feel if I can do it myself, I want to do it myself," he said. "And there are times where you can't do it yourself and the system takes over or it's appropriate to do things differently. But, I think driving your son and your wife away from hospital was really important to me."

As for the nearly 1-month-old baby, William referred to him as "a little bit of a rascal" who he said reminded him of his younger brother, Prince Harry.

Striking a slightly exasperated tone familiar to many new fathers, he said he wished Prince George would settle down a little.

"At the moment, the only legacy I want to pass on to him is to sleep more and maybe not have to change his nappy so many times."

The interview is part of a one-hour CNN documentary, "Prince William's Passion: New Hope, New Father," due to air on Sept. 15.

http://bqbonbria.blogdetik.com/2013/08/03/chronically-happy-joyful-living-in-spite-of-chronic-illness-e-book/
http://modestoukf.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/08/04/Downloads-Long%2C-Obstinate%2C-and-Bloody%3A-The-Battle-of-Guilford-Courthouse-ebook
http://friendfeed.com/ynuou/f77c8252/le-cycle-de-torrents-dernier-amour-jan-ebook
http://uxsubuje.livejournal.com/18168.html
http://friendfeed.com/colbc/5b2b35fe/downloads-holy-spirit-church-and-christian
http://twitpic.com/d6ixig
http://friendfeed.com/tmeduoz/513babec/revelation-life-lessons-e-book
http://friendfeed.com/mpdci/c2218f40/introduced-mammals-of-world-their-history
http://en.netlog.com/danewiesner/blog/blogid=27924272
http://esqoboqo.livejournal.com/14970.html
http://enkenous.bloggeuse.net/The-first-blog-b1/The-Future-of-RD-Outsourcing-book-downloads-b1-p103.htm
http://brentondvacau.webs.com/apps/blog/show/31770721
http://twitpic.com/d6ixjm
http://uzrofebo.jimdo.com/2013/08/04/extrusion-new-plastics-extrusion-machinery-includes-list-of-equipment-manufacturers-cover-story-directory-an-article-from-plastics-engineering-book/
http://ipqociho.jimdo.com/2013/08/04/download-the-second-veil-a-tale-of-the-scattered-earth-book/
