Boxer Floyd Mayweather tops highest-paid

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the highest-paid professional athlete in the United States with expected earnings of at least $90 million this year from just two bouts, according to Sports Illustrated magazine.

The 36-year-old welterweight - considered the best defensive boxer of his generation - topped the magazine's Fortunate 50 list, issued on Wednesday. Mayweather also took the top spot last year, earning an estimated $85 million, again from just two fights, the magazine reported.

Miami Heat basketball star LeBron James, 28, a four-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player, came in this year in the number two slot, earning a total of $56.5 million.

The list is calculated by combining estimated salary, winnings and endorsements. Mayweather's total earnings are even more impressive considering he received no endorsement money either this year or last.

James' $56.5 million income combines a $17.5 million salary with an additional $39 million in endorsements.

Golfer Tiger Woods, the highest paid U.S. athlete from 2004, when the list was first published, through 2011, dropped to the No. 5 slot on this year's list, earning $40.8 million.

Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano came in as the 50th highest-paid U.S. athlete with an estimated $18.2 million.

Candidates for the list must be U.S. citizens and compete in a U.S.-based league.

Internationally, soccer great David Beckham is estimated to earn more than $48 million, landing him the top spot on the magazine's annual list of highest-paid athletes worldwide, The International 20.

(Reporting by Chris Francescani; Editing by Cynthia Johnston and Tim Dobbyn)

http://sijimire.deviantart.com/journal/Downloads-Gordon-Browning-an-oral-memoir-Tennes-381797964
http://bhfeuoburq.blogdetik.com/2013/06/27/dangerously-attractive-harlequin-intrigue-read-online/
http://friendfeed.com/eirei/07ec54d4/downloads-search-for-peace-in-middle-east
http://susannahko.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/06/30/Download-Management-and-Economics-of-Construction-Safety-in-Hong-Kong-book
http://elnoraruzb.skyrock.com/3171337455-Downloads-Ten-Mile-Creek-ebook.html
http://en.netlog.com/doylesallee/blog/blogid=25873704
http://cuupioan.metroblog.com/simple_strawberry_sensations!_book_downloads
http://myrtpoqy.edublogs.org/2013/06/30/economics/
http://juevaqil.livejournal.com/5523.html
http://en.netlog.com/willawhitted/blog/blogid=25873697

House Republicans divided on immigration

By Thomas Ferraro and Rachelle Younglai

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives emerged from an immigration meeting on Wednesday divided over whether to help the 11 million undocumented people living in the United States, but eager to bolster border security.

Several lawmakers said there appeared to be no consensus over calls for granting legal status to the 11 million, many of whom have lived in the United States for years, after a 2 1/2-hour closed-door session.

"We have a disagreement inside here," said Republican Representative Steve King, who guessed that his colleagues were split "50/50" on whether any of the undocumented residents should get legal status.

There will likely have to be an agreement between the Republican-led House and Democratic-led Senate, which last month approved a comprehensive immigration bill backed by the White House that includes a pathway to citizenship.

Backers of the Senate bill insist some sort of path to citizenship must be part of any final bill that they help send to President Barack Obama to sign into law.

The Republican lawmakers said there was consensus that the U.S. border should be secured further against illegal crossings and suggested that House Speaker John Boehner could seek passage of such a bill as a first step toward a larger agreement.

Republican leaders issued a statement again rejecting a Senate-passed bill that puts the 11 million on a 13-year path to citizenship.

"It's hard not to be discouraged right now," said Senator Jeff Flake, the Arizona Republican who helped write the Senate bill and served 12 years in the House.

The Senate bill removes the threat of deportation for most illegal residents, but features several hurdles to citizenship, including learning English, paying back taxes and passing criminal background checks. It authorizes $46 billion for border security and to revamp the visa system to help high-tech firms, farmers and other businesses hire foreign workers.

Obama and his fellow Democrats have been calling for prompt action by the House. Earlier on Wednesday, the president told a group of Hispanic lawmakers that he was willing to do whatever it takes to help enact a bill.

Even former President George W. Bush, who rarely wades into policy debates, gave a boost to efforts in Congress. While the two-term Republican president did not embrace any particular bill, he said he hoped there would be a "positive resolution."

Speaking in Dallas at a naturalization ceremony, Bush said, "We have a problem. The laws governing the immigration system aren't working. ... The system is broken."

But House Republicans, who hold a 234-201 majority over Democrats, gave no indication of fast action on a major bill.

"It is going to be a process of months, not days or weeks," Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma told Reuters in a telephone interview after Wednesday's meeting.

"I don't see anything until late this year or early next year. It is going to take that long; it is going to be that big of a debate," Cole added, referring to tough bargaining with the Senate.

Meanwhile, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is working on a plan to grant citizenship for children of illegal immigrants who are in the United States through no fault of their own, according to Republican lawmakers. In the past, Republicans have blocked such legislation.

'AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL'

But even that relatively modest step is controversial among some of the most conservative House Republicans.

"You can't separate the ... kids from those (parents) who came across the border with a pack of contraband on their back," King said.

And Representative Mo Brooks said he recited a line from "America the Beautiful" to bolster his argument that legislation should not help those in the United States illegally: "Confirm thy soul in self control, Thy liberty in law."

"Anyone who has come to our country, their first step on American soil is to thumb their nose at American laws ... we should not award them with our highest honor, which is citizenship," Brooks said.

Earlier, the White House signaled that Obama will become more publicly engaged in the intensifying immigration debate in Congress.

The administration released a report arguing that passing sweeping immigration reforms such as the Senate's would expand the economy 3.3 percent by 2023 and reduce the federal deficit by almost $850 billion over 20 years.

Thomas Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which wants comprehensive immigration reforms enacted, expressed hope that public support would prompt House Republicans to eventually back a major bill. "If the arguments are compelling, this deal is not over by any means," he said.

The November presidential election, in which Obama captured more than 70 percent of the growing Hispanic vote, was seen by many Republicans as a wake-up call that their party must do more to appeal to minorities.

The call for comprehensive reform resonates with some Republican senators, who have to run in statewide elections, and with some prospective Republican presidential candidates.

But it holds less appeal to House Republicans who fear challenges from the conservative Tea Party movement if they back a pathway to citizenship, a core demand of Democrats.

According to a recent study by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, which tracks congressional races, only 24 of the 234 House Republicans represent districts that are more than 25 percent Hispanic.

David Wasserman, who conducted the Cook study, said most House Republicans believe they could defeat a Democratic challenger in the general election.

But "they don't know if they will face a Republican primary challenge if they vote for an immigration bill backed by the president," Wasserman said.

(Writing by Richard Cowan; Additional reporting by Caren Bohan in Washington and Lisa Maria Garza in Dallas; Editing by Doina Chiacu)

http://jonnieru.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/07/03/Der-gestohlene-Mond-%28German-Edition%29-online
http://friendfeed.com/upavlnb/5d5a571d/downloads-sushi-food-for-eye-body-and-soul-ebook
http://blog.yahoo.com/_VOWSWUWWZEY3P5C7DIIDTYPDZ4/articles/1222199
http://mellissaay.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/07/03/Charter-of-the-City-of-Sacramento-e-book-downloads
http://kacafuzz.deviantart.com/journal/Dereliction-of-Duty-Eyewitness-Account-of-How-B-382576667
http://primaveriaymij.edublogs.org/2013/07/03/the-2009-2014-outlook-for-dry-salad-dressing-mixes-in-greater-china-book-downloads/
http://friendfeed.com/uaafko/933e8599/downloads-1-2-3-magic-effective-discipline-for
http://kadoscam.deviantart.com/journal/Between-The-Lighthouse-And-The-Windmill-read-onli-382576692
http://friendfeed.com/zmnvb/c9424185/le-dossier-113-french-edition-download
http://puhecsivop.blogdetik.com/2013/07/03/mr-buff-sizzling-encounters-download/
http://erpeles.blog.com/2013/07/03/halloween-riddles-chubboard-books-download/
http://luiseai.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/07/03/Illinois-s-War%3A-The-Civil-War-in-Documents-%28Civil-War-in-the-Great-Interior%29-ebook
http://blog.yahoo.com/_JGU342B6BHUEVKY6SITIOKLIQY/articles/1327669
http://vvmobmmop.metroblog.com/acres_of_diamonds_the_russell_conwell_story
http://gaicugug.livejournal.com/8722.html
http://nvqemsute.blogdetik.com/2013/07/01/downloads-gridiron-glory-days-football-at-mercer-1892-1942/
http://friendfeed.com/upavlnb/1dd3bb55/download-atlanta-at-table-book
http://blog.yahoo.com/_VOWSWUWWZEY3P5C7DIIDTYPDZ4/articles/1222200
http://friendfeed.com/ifbvlmn/f710b681/2009-2014-world-outlook-for-food-grade-dry-and

Egypt braces for more protests, prays fo

By Yasmine Saleh and Mike Collett-White

CAIRO (Reuters) - Supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi called for protests on Friday, and Egyptians prayed there would be no repeat of clashes that killed more than 90 people in the last week and left the Arab world's biggest nation bitterly divided.

Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood movement wants people to join it on the streets to push for Egypt's first freely elected leader to be reinstated, an aim that now seems in vain.

Officials say Mursi is still being held at the Republican Guard compound in Cairo, where troops killed 53 Islamist protesters on Monday in a clash that intensified anger his allies already felt at the military's decision to oust him.

Four soldiers were also killed in a battle the military says was started by terrorists. Mursi's supporters say those who died were praying peacefully when troops opened fire.

Egypt's 84 million people have been shocked by the shootings, graphic images of which have appeared on state and private news channels and social media.

The incident came just three days after 35 people were killed in clashes between pro- and anti-Mursi demonstrators across the country.

"It's a very hard time for Egyptians, to see footage of blood and violence during the holy month of Ramadan, and everyone I speak to says the same thing," said Fateh Ali, a 54-year-old civil servant in Cairo.

"I really hope the situation gets resolved soon. I don't think we can afford this economically or psychologically."

The Brotherhood believes it is the victim of a brutal military crackdown, evoking memories of when it was suppressed under longtime autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak. He was toppled in a popular uprising in 2011.

But many of its opponents blame Islamists for the violence, and some have little sympathy for demonstrators who died, underlining how deep the fissures in Egyptian society are.

VIGIL, SONGS FOR THE DEAD

Outside the Rabaa Adawiya mosque in northeastern Cairo, thousands of Brotherhood supporters gathered to mourn the dead in Monday's attack.

Women wailed and men cried as they watched a large screen showing graphic footage of hospital scenes immediately after the shooting, with corpses on the floor and medics struggling to cope with the number of bloodied casualties being carried in.

Hundreds of Egyptian flags fluttered in the evening breeze. Songs of defiance were sung.

Many thousands of Islamists have camped out in the area, braving searing heat and, since Wednesday, daytime fasting during Ramadan.

It has become the de facto base of the Brotherhood, whose leaders live under the threat of detention after the public prosecutor ordered their arrests earlier in the week.

Judicial sources say authorities are expected to charge Mursi in the coming days, although it is not clear for what.

The detentions and threats of arrest have drawn criticism from the United States, which has walked a diplomatic tightrope to avoid calling Mursi's ouster at the hands of the powerful Egyptian military a coup.

U.S. law bars aid to countries where a democratic government is removed in a coup. Washington, which gives Egypt's military $1.3 billion in aid each year, has said it is too early to say whether the Egyptian events meet that description.

The Egyptian army said it was enforcing the nation's will after millions of people, fed up at economic stagnation and suspicious of a Brotherhood power grab, took to the streets at the end of June to demand his resignation.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Wednesday Mursi's government "wasn't a democratic rule."

Her words were warmly received by the interim government and swiftly denounced by the Brotherhood. But on Thursday, Psaki expressed concern over the crackdown on Brotherhood leaders.

"If politicized arrests and detentions continue, it is hard to see how Egypt will move beyond this crisis," she told a daily briefing on Thursday.

ALARM OVERSEAS

Underlining the level of concern overseas at Egypt's crisis, two U.S. Navy ships patrolling in the Middle East moved closer to Egypt's Red Sea coast in recent days, in what appeared to be a precautionary move following Mursi's ouster on July 3.

The United States often sends Navy vessels close to countries in turmoil in case it needs to protect or evacuate U.S. citizens or give humanitarian assistance. Beblawi held his first meetings with political leaders on Wednesday and told Reuters that he expected the transitional Cabinet to be in place early next week.

Negotiations are difficult, with the authorities trying to attract support from groups that range from secularists to ultra-orthodox Muslims, nearly all of whom expressed deep dissatisfaction with elements of the interim constitution.

(Additional reporting by Alexander Dziadosz, Maggie Fick, Sarah McFarlane, Mike Collett-White, Tom Perry, Peter Graff, Ali Saed, Seham el-Oraby, Shadia Nasralla and Tom Finn in Cairo and Andrea Shalal-Esa and Lesley Wroughton in Washington; Writing by Mike Collett-White; Editing by Xavier Briand)

http://fecorule.deviantart.com/journal/EMEA-Router-Summary-2Q05-book-downloads-383777673
http://friendfeed.com/laiuozu/4137dd0d/herbs-boxed-set-online
http://aurcpftch.blogdetik.com/2013/07/06/downloads-one-bad-thing-book/
http://en.netlog.com/ahmadgerke/blog/blogid=26326872
http://en.netlog.com/arliestacks/blog/blogid=26326874
http://friendfeed.com/byusece/1327ca25/download-collins-scotland-pocket-map-travel
http://en.netlog.com/rosemarietartaglia/blog/blogid=26326877
http://blog.yahoo.com/_JGU342B6BHUEVKY6SITIOKLIQY/articles/1328854
http://blogs.rediff.com/estebanide/2013/07/08/i-will-never-not-ever-eat-a-tomato-charlie-and-lola-ebook/
http://friendfeed.com/kvibkq/81f457d9/download-europeans-don-t-like-spam-either-tech
http://saufode.livejournal.com/13347.html
http://fabuluke.deviantart.com/journal/Download-PSP-Entertainment-Pack-book-383777720
http://wendiud.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/07/08/Doggonest-Vacation-e-book
http://noahzym.edublogs.org/2013/07/08/download-claiming-power-in-doctor-patient-talk-oxford-studies-in-sociolinguistics-ebook/
http://en.netlog.com/ileanaclanton/blog/blogid=26326884
http://uvxocewe.blog.com/2013/07/08/download-the-illustrated-practical-book-of-family-health-first-aid-from-treating-cuts-sprains-and-bandaging-in-an-emergency-to-making-decisions-on-long-term-health-and-fitness-of-your-fami/
http://aracelisycyu.skyrock.com/3173023533-Downloads-Uncertain-Suffering-Racial-Health-Care-Disparities-and.html

Daycare may benefit kids of depressed mo

By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children of depressed mothers are less likely to have emotional problems if they attend daycare, a new Canadian study suggests.

Researchers have known that depressed women are more likely to have kids who also develop depression and anxiety disorders, and that those problems can extend through the teenage years.

"It's interesting to think of this as a possible type of intervention and a way of supporting mothers in general, but especially mothers who are at risk," said Catherine Herba, from the University of Quebec at Montreal.

The researchers followed close to 1,800 children born in Quebec in 1997-1998 and their mothers through the child's fifth birthday.

Women were regularly surveyed about their depression symptoms and reported on their child's emotional problems and separation anxiety, as well as the type of childcare they used.

About 19 percent of mothers had depression symptoms during the study period. And as previous research has suggested, their children were almost twice as likely to develop emotional problems and separation anxiety before age five, Herba's team wrote in JAMA Psychiatry.

However, being in childcare seemed to mitigate that effect. The association was particularly strong for group-based childcare, as opposed to care provided by a relative or babysitter.

Among children with depressed mothers, attending daycare was tied to a 79 percent reduced risk of developing emotional problems, compared to kids who stayed home with their moms.

Across the study, between nine and 31 percent of preschoolers had emotional problems depending on whether their mothers were depressed and where they received care.

How many hours a week kids spent in childcare did not seem as important as the type of care itself, the researchers found. They said the structured setting of group-based care, having care provided by a trained professional and spending time with children of a similar age may all be benefits to that type of childcare.

"Center-based care can really serve as a buffer for children of depressed mothers," said Catherine Ayoub, who has studied Early Head Start programs at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

"As those mothers are paying some attention to their own depressive symptoms, as they're struggling with depression, the children can be buffered from the effects of depression on their development," Ayoub, who wasn't involved in the new study, told Reuters Health.

Her research has suggested programs that reach out to both children and mothers themselves can be especially beneficial for families over the long run.

Ayoub, also from the Brazelton Touchpoints Center, said women should know that they can still be good mothers if they are depressed, and also that there are many ways to treat depression - so they can get better.

"Yes, you may be depressed, but you also can really move toward resilience," she said. "It's okay to find the best possible care for your child that's also a way to take care of yourself."

Herba said that doctors should be looking for new mothers who are depressed and speak to them about the potential benefits of using childcare and getting help for themselves.

"It's quite important that we give good support to these mothers and try to facilitate this as much as possible," she said.

SOURCE: JAMA Psychiatry, online June 19, 2013.

http://oslebeve.jimdo.com/2013/06/26/downloads-judy-moody-and-the-not-bummer-summer-with-earbuds-playaway-children-e-book/
http://twitpic.com/czbxqf
http://jeaunoju.edublogs.org/2013/06/26/gulliveraposs-travels-into-several-remote-regions-of-the-world-ebook-downloads/
http://leaos.blog.free.fr/index.php?post/2013/06/26/Downloads-Nonlinear-Hyperbolic-Problems
http://friendfeed.com/upzhaea/a308a7b8/hungarian-keyboard-stickers-with-blue
http://jacquesoma.skyrock.com/3170513443-Download-Caring-for-Children-with-Special-Healthcare-Needs-and-Their.html
http://sigridyro.skyrock.com/3170513481-Downloads-Origins-of-NLP-e-book.html
http://twitpic.com/czbxrd
http://blogs.rediff.com/macbcn/2013/06/27/download-movies-that-matter-reading-film-through-the-lens-of-faith/
http://aeriellobaz.edublogs.org/2013/06/26/hazardous-duty-squeaky-clean-mysteries-no-1-ebook-downloads/
http://twitpic.com/czbxrl
http://aydoqour.blogdetik.com/2013/06/25/from-eden-to-exile-unraveling-mysteries-of-the-bible/
http://en.netlog.com/metaphilson/blog/blogid=25631558
http://blogs.rediff.com/shakitazuy/2013/06/27/avenue-q-the-book-e-book-downloads/

Medicare May Fund Brain Scans for Alzhei

If scientists had a test to confirm Alzheimers disease, would that have changed the outcome for some treatments that failed to pass scientific muster in clinical trials? Would such a test open doors for future treatments? Alzheimers researchers hoping to explore these questions had mixed reactions last week after Medicare recommended that the national health plan for the elderly and disabled only pay for a controversial $3,000 test that detects brain plaque linked to Alzheimers in several specific instancesincluding clinical trials that seek better treatment for the disease. The recommendation, if acted on, could mean more people will learn if they have significant buildup of a protein in the brain associated with Alzheimers. But some researchers in the Alzheimers community say that the proposed coverage limitation falls short of giving many patients valuable clinical information.

Current science prevents doctors from making a definitive diagnosis determining if a patient has Alzheimers until they can analyze the postmortem brain under a microscope during an autopsy and find telltale signs of the disease. During life, physicians typically make a presumptive diagnosis of the disease via a neurological and psychological evaluation that rules out other reasons a patient may have Alzheimers-like symptoms (including tumor, stroke or vitamin B12 deficiency).

Last year physicians received a new tool when U.S. regulators approved a test that uses an imaging agent owned by Eli Lilly and Co. that detects a certain kind of protein in the brain. Scientists are still not sure if elevated levels of amyloid beta indicate a patient has Alzheimers or if it is merely a symptom of impaired brain function. But if more patients receive the test and are aware that they have a buildup of the protein, theoretically scientists could cast a wider net for research on the diseaseincluding tracking its progression and how, or if, it manifests itself when the plaque is apparent. When previous Alzheimers treatments failed during clinical trials, one critique from pharmaceutical companies was that perhaps the data were sullied by patients who had other dementias or reasons for Alzheimers-like symptoms rather than the disease.

Implementing this amyloid-imaging test as a requirement for inclusion in trials could potentially strengthen testing because it could weed out individuals without the protein buildup. Already, ahead of last weeks decision, clinical trials were in the works that would use amyloid imaging as an entry requirement. So if Medicare foots the bill for the test, it could help to marginally lower the costs for that research, backers of the test say. But not all Alzheimers experts are sold on amyloids importance. Whereas some scientists believe that the protein blocks communication between neurons and its presence is a harbinger of disease, others point to work that suggests the predictive powers of the scans are severely limited, given that individuals with normal brain function .

To date, a large obstacle to finding treatments for Alzheimers has been identifying patients who are still in the very early stages of the disease. Medicares recommendations on when to cover the cost of the test does little to change that, charges Dan Skovronsky, CEO of Lilly subsidiary Avid Radiopharmaceuticals. The draft decision from Medicare did not suggest covering the test in the wide variety of circumstances that were laid out in earlier protocol recommendations from a task force convened by the Alzheimers Association, a voluntary health organization focused on the disease. Instead, it said that Medicare should pay the bill for people receiving the test in clinical trials geared toward finding better treatments (and thus those patients would have already been diagnosed through traditional methods and funneled to the trial). It proposed Medicare should also pay for the imaging test in instances where physicians want to rule out Alzheimer's as a diagnosis or when medical providers are trying to distinguish Alzheimers from frontotemporal dementia. Currently Medicare does not cover any amyloid beta PET scanning.

Both Lilly and the Alzheimers Association issued statements following the decision saying that the proposed level of coverage would not be enough and that funding the test in only those limited circumstances would hamstring patient care. The last word on the coverage is due this fall when Medicare issues its final decision. Whereas private insurance companies often follow Medicares lead on coverage decisions, there is no requirement that the companies mirror its ruling.

A negative result from the PET test is actually more informative than a positive result, says Lawrence Honig, an Alzheimers expert at Columbia University Medical Center. No buildup suggests it is unlikely that a patients neurological condition is a result of Alzheimers. And teasing apart when cognitive impairment is due to Alzheimers versus another condition such as frontotemporal dementia is important because drugs used to manage Alzheimers could have negative side effects for a patient without the disease, Skovronsky says. Neither Alzheimers nor frontotemporal dementia has any existing treatment that stops or slows its progression.

The test from Lilly uses positron emission tomography (PET) to detect collections of amyloid in the brain. To perform the test, a radioactive chemical is injected into the body and then taken up by the brain. The chemical, patented by Lilly, temporarily attaches itself to areas of the brain where there is a concentration of amyloid, and the PET scan picks up that radioactive tag. Ultimately, what were trying to find is like a cholesterol test for the brain, says Gary Small, director of the University of California, Los Angeles, Longevity Center. If you go to a doctor and youre over a certain age, a doctor will test your cholesterol. And if it is high, the doctor will give you a statin and lower your risk of heart attack or stroke. With Alzheimers, however, there is no existing treatment to act as the statin if risk is identified earlier.

Ronald Petersen, director of the Mayo Clinics Alzheimers Disease Research Center in Rochester, Minn., says that physicians should have such amyloid imaging data at their fingertips because it gives clinicians information that differs from other scans. In reality, it may not change the treatment plan all that much, Petersen says. But I still think its important to know if that is what is going on. It may motivate people to engage in lifestyle activities that may influence this process and help people plan for the futurethough the timing of that planning may be uncertain.

Followon Twitterand .

Visitfor the latest in science, health and technology news.

 2013 .
Ice Above Lake Vostok Includes DNA From

Microbes that live inside fish intestines are among the array of life that appear to have been found in ice drilled from above Lake Vostok, the deepest lake buried beneath Antarctica's ice sheet.

The ice is thought to be from frozenwater, chilled by contact with the lake's overlying glacier. Called accretion ice, scientists first reported evidence of microbes in this ice in the journal Science in 1999. In some spots above the lake, the accretion ice is more than 650 feet (200 meters) thick and 20,000 years old, scientists believe. Though ice has sealed the surface for up to 15 million years, subglacial waterways may have refreshed the lake and even brought in life from outside the basin, scientists think.

Now, a new study of genetic material in the accretion ice reveals more than 3,500 unique traces of , including animals, from a wide variety of ecosystems. Most of the snippets of DNA and RNA are from bacteria and fungi, according to the report, published July 3 in the journal PLOS ONE. Some sequences match living microbes pulled from the same ice cores by the research team in 2008 and 2009, said senior author Scott Rogers, a molecular biologist at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. []

Although the researchers found genetic evidence of many different organisms in the ice, the overall concentration was incredibly low compared with water from lake systems on other continents, Rogers said, ranging between one cell to 100 cells per milliliter (0.04 ounces) of fluid. "If [Lake Vostok] does have life, it's interesting life, but it's not highly concentrated life," Rogers told LiveScience.

New view of Vostok

Lake Vostok is Antarctica's biggest and deepest subglacial lake; its surface sits 1,600 feet (500 m) below sea level. It is roughly the size of Lake Ontario and lies beneath 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) of ice. The lake basin is about 35 million years old and was entombed after Antarctica underwent a deep freeze about 15 million years ago. Signs ofsuggest rivers, streams or floods periodically refresh the lake, so the water in the lake is much younger than 15 million years. However, Rogers estimates the accretion ice tested in the study is between 5,000 to 10,000 years old.

The ice cores analyzed in the current study have been shared and scrutinized internationally since they were extracted in the 1990s by Russian scientists. The first hints of life turned up soon after the cores were removed, such as in the series of papers published in Science in 1999.

In their new study, Rogers and his colleagues discovered genetic sequences from , adapted to the chilly, light-poor environment. Among the bacteria were species that live in hydrothermal vents and organisms that colonize the intestines of rainbow trout, lobsters and tubeworms.

The team also found stretches of RNA and DNA from animals such as tiny, deep-sea-living mollusks and the water flea, a small floating crustacean found in almost every permanent water body on Earth. "The organisms we've been finding are in the very, very small range. These are tiny little creatures," Rogers said.

Finding Vostok's hotspot

Reports of life from Antarctic lakes, especially from the Vostok ice cores, have been plagued by . In the past decade, Rogers and his team developed a painstaking decontamination technique to remove genetic contagion on the outside of the ice core while preserving the ancient DNA and RNA within, he said. The method involves a bleach wash, as well as melting, filtering and refreezing the ice.

"Contamination is still a concern, but we think the contamination methods we have developed ensure that all the external contamination has been eliminated," Rogers said.

In the future, the team plans to conduct genetic tests on additional ice cores to pin down the center of biological activity above the lake. Studies suggest the shallow part of the lake is the active zone, with the highest cell counts in ice cores from above this region, Rogers said.

"As you get further out into the lake, the cell count really drops," he said. "We're interested in finding out what's there and how they're able to live there. Life seems to find a way to survive almost everywhere on Earth that you can go."

Earlier this year, scientists exploring subglacialreported the first evidence for microbial life in water retrieved from a buried lake in Antarctica. There are nearly 380 subglacial lakes, remnants of the lost world beneath the ice sheet.

Emailor follow her . Follow us , & .
NTSB: Plane parts found in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Asiana jet that crashed at San Francisco International Airport left lower sections of its tail on a rocky seawall and in the bay, then scattered debris several hundred feet down the runway, the NTSB reported Monday in describing the plane's deadly path.

National Transportation Safety Board chairwoman Deborah Hersman said the lower portion of the plane's tail cone was found in rocks inside the seawall. A "significant piece" of the tail of the aircraft was in the water, and other plane parts were visible at low tide, she said.

Hersman said at a news conference that investigators have reviewed airport surveillance video to determine whether an emergency vehicle ran over one of two teenage girls killed in Saturday's crash but have not been able to reach any conclusions.

She called the possibility a "very serious issue."

"I can tell you that the two fatalities were located in seats towards the rear of the aircraft. This is an area of the aircraft that was structurally significantly damaged. It's an area where we're seeing a lot of the critical or serious injuries," Hersman said of the girls' location.

Investigators want to make sure they have all the facts before reaching any conclusions, Hersman said, adding that the coroner has not yet determined the girl's cause of death and is charged with doing so.

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault earlier said his office was conducting an autopsy to determine whether one of the victims survived the crash but was run over and killed by a responding vehicle. He said his staff was notified of the possibility by senior San Francisco Fire Department officials at the crash site on Saturday.

San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White and Assistant Deputy Chief Dale Carnes both said earlier Monday that one of the two teenage girls killed in the crash might have been struck.

"There was a possibility one of two fatalities might have been contacted by one of our apparatus at one point during the incident," Carnes said.

More than 180 people went to hospitals with injuries. But remarkably, 305 of 307 passengers and crew survived the crash and more than a third didn't even require hospitalization. Only a small number were critically injured.

Investigators said Asiana Airlines Flight 214 was traveling "significantly below" the target speed during its approach and that the crew tried to abort the landing just before it smashed onto the runway. What they don't yet know is whether the pilot's inexperience with the Boeing 777 and at San Francisco's airport played a role. Officials said the probe will also focus on whether the airport or plane's equipment also could have malfunctioned.

One of the issues NTSB investigators are certain to give a hard look is what role pilot fatigue played in the accident. The accident occurred after a 10-hour nighttime flight. As is typical for long flights, there were four pilots on board precisely so that they can switch off in teams of two to get rest. But pilots who are regularly fly long routes say it's very difficult to get restful sleep on planes.

The accident occurred in the late morning in San Francisco, but back in Seoul it was 3:37 a.m. That means that pilots were trying to stay alert and make decisions most likely during their bodies' circadian low the time of day when people most crave sleep even if they are rested. Studies show that during circadian lows usually between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. or 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., depending upon the study people are often slow to respond and their judgment can be as eroded as much as if they were drunk.

"Fatigue is there. It is a factor," said Kevin Hiatt, a former Delta Air Lines chief international pilot. "At the end of a 10-hour flight, regardless of whether you have had a two-hour nap or not, it has been a long flight."

Hiatt said that when he used to fly international flights "sometimes you got a real quality nap, and other times you had some real noisy passengers. Or you got too hot or too cold, just like a normal passenger. You just didn't get what you thought you should get."

NTSB will also want to know how much rest the pilots had before the flight.

"This one of the issues the NTSB will be looking at with the Asiana crew, which is what were you doing in the 24 hours before flight? Did you actually sleep?" said Hiatt, president and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation in Alexandria, Va., which promotes global airline safety.

NTSB has long been concerned about the effects of fatigue not only on airline pilots, but on operators in accidents across all modes of transportation.

Seconds before the Boeing 777 crashed, a member of the flight crew made a call to increase the jet's lagging speed, Hersman said. Then came a warning that the plane was about to stall and cockpit communication that the crew wanted to abort the landing and go back up for another try, she said.

At impact the plane's airspeed was about 106 knots, well below the 137 knots it should have been going as it crossed the runway, Hersman said Monday.

The airline said Monday in Seoul that the pilot at the controls had little experience flying that type of plane and was landing one for the first time at that airport.

Asiana spokeswoman Lee Hyomin said that Lee Gang-guk, who was at the controls, had nearly 10,000 hours flying other planes but only 43 in the 777, a plane she said he still was getting used to flying. Another pilot on the flight, Lee Jeong-min, had about 12,390 hours of flying experience, including 3,220 hours on the 777, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in South Korea. Lee was the deputy pilot, tasked with helping Lee Gang-guk get accustomed to the 777, according to Asiana Airlines.

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said the 291 passengers included 141 Chinese, 77 South Koreans, 64 Americans, three Canadians, three Indians, one Japanese, one Vietnamese and one person from France.

The two dead passengers have been identified as students from China, 16 and 17 years old, who were scheduled to attend summer camp in California with dozens of classmates. Hospital officials said Sunday that two of the people who remained hospitalized in critical condition were paralyzed with spinal injuries, while another two showed "road rash" injuries consistent with being dragged.

Foucrault, the coroner, said one of the bodies was found on the tarmac near where the plane's tail broke off when it slammed into the runway. The other was found on the left side of the plane about 30 feet (10 meters) away from where the jetliner came to rest after it skidded down the runway.

The flight originated in Shanghai, China, and stopped over in Seoul, South Korea, before making the nearly 11-hour trip to San Francisco.

In the chaotic moments after the landing, when baggage was tumbling from the overhead bins onto passengers and people all around her were screaming, Wen Zhang grabbed her 4-year-old son, who hit the seat in front of him and broke his leg.

Spotting a hole at the back of the jumbo jet where the bathroom had been, she carried her boy to safety.

"I had no time to be scared," she said.

Nearby, people who escaped were dousing themselves with water from the bay, possibly to cool burn injuries, authorities said.

By the time the flames were out, much of the top of the fuselage had burned away. The tail section was gone, with pieces of it scattered across the beginning of the runway. One engine was gone, and the other was no longer on the wing.

___

Associated Press writers Joan Lowy in Washington D.C., Jason Dearen, Terry Collins, Terry Chea, Lisa Leff and Sudhin Thanawala in San Francisco, David Koenig in Dallas, Louise Watt in Beijing and Hyung-jin Kim in Seoul contributed to this report.

http://en.netlog.com/greggfick/blog/blogid=25948008
http://udcitej.jimdo.com/2013/07/01/an-essay-on-the-principle-of-population-book/
http://vigjeep.nicegallery.net/The-first-blog-b1/Environmental-Compliance-in-Your-State-Montana-online-b1-p29.htm
http://blogs.rediff.com/crismaqn/2013/07/02/apartment-building-wealth-the-passive-investors-guide-to-building-long-term-wealth-and-financial-security-investing-in-apartment-buildings-e-book/
http://friendfeed.com/iyiba/30816dd5/carpe-chaos-worst-case-scenario-online
http://qbfkkonid.metroblog.com/downloads_the_2011_2016_outlook_for_filter_tip_tobacco_and_non_tobacco_cigarettes_in_greater_china_book
http://qouzadi.livejournal.com/7852.html
http://friendfeed.com/ibfmo/948df8c3/waterfalls-pebble-plus-natural-wonders
http://eihooaoe.blogdetik.com/2013/07/02/download-hooray-for-reading-day-jessica-worries-book/
http://friendfeed.com/brkvee/9d32d8e0/art-of-modern-china-e-book
http://iwkanoyi.jimdo.com/2013/07/01/econometric-specification-of-stochastic-discount-factor-models-an-article-from-journal-of-econometrics-book/
http://tomipuce.deviantart.com/journal/Download-Picaresque-ebook-382167037
http://iekumesbbi.blogdetik.com/2013/07/02/devil-in-a-red-dress-book-downloads/
http://en.netlog.com/georgiannawendler/blog/blogid=25948014
