Bleach (Sodium hypochlorite)In June, 2002 a part time caretaker in a Toronto school was rushed to hospital after complaining to a co worker that she was unable to breathe. She later died in hospital. Investigators looking into the incident discovered that she had mixed a sanitizing product containing sodium hypochlorite with an acid toilet bowl cleaner. The two ingredients had reacted together to form deadly chlorine gas, which led to her death.

When bleach is mixed with acids (typically found in toilet bowl cleaners), it reacts with them to form chlorine gas.

When it is mixed with ammonia, it can create chloramine gas, another toxic substance.

In the environment, sodium hypochlorite is acutely toxic to fish. The chlorine in bleach can also bind with organic material in the marine environment to form organochlorines, toxic compounds that can persist in the environment.

Chlorine use is a particular concern for those who live in areas such as Victoria, where there is not even primary treatment of sewage wastewater before it is discharged into the ocean.

There may be some circumstances where bleach use is necessary for disease control, but there is little need for it on a regular basis.

Tests have shown that washing counters and other surfaces with soap and water removes most bacteria and there are a number of oxygen based alternatives for laundry uses of bleach.

Fuzhou is an old port city, Marco Polo visited it. In the 19th century, it exported more tea than any other Chinese port. Today, it is the provincial capital and administrative center, and also a major center for light industry. The city is on the Min River, a few km inland from the sea. There are many mountains and waterfalls in the hinterland, while sandy beaches are abundant in the coastal areas, especially in the town of Changle and the island of Pingtan. The actual port is in the suburb of Mawei, which has also been a center for shipbuilding for several hundred years. In 1884, the French destroyed a dockyard at Mawei, sinking a good part of the Chinese navy and killing hundreds. There is a museum to commemorate this. The Fuzhou region has its own language, called Fuzhou Hua (Fuzhou speech) or Mindong (Eastern Min, where "min" is another name for Fujian). The region also has its own culture and an architectural style distinct from other regions in China and Fujian, which can be found both in the city and in the towns and rural areas around it. The city has the oldest wood structure in South China (Hualin Temple) and has one of the largest historic downtown districts in China "Three Lanes and Seven Alleys" with over 200 residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Get in[edit]Fuzhou has air links to most other major Chinese cities. The airport is an hour from town in the suburb of Changle, by bus. You can get the bus at the Apollo Hotel. There are also complimentary shuttles to the Apollo Hotel from other places such as the Min Jiang Hotel. Shared taxis also go from there, at around A private taxi would be around likely more unless you haggle well.

By bus[edit]

Direct overnight buses to/from Hong Kong, Shenzhen or Guangzhou exist, with sleeping bunks. it is usually worth the extra for comfort. Customs and immigration is at the ferry arrival center. It does seem there are any ATMs here but a 1 yuan bus will take you to the city (40 50 mins). You can reach it via 5 or 22 city busses, or it is cheap and quick by taxi from anywhere in central Fuzhou. There is also a new Fuzhou South station, located rather inconveniently. A taxi to it will be or so from downtown and take about half an hour. The K2 bus runs between the two stations; the cheapest way to the South station if you have time is to go to the main station and take that bus from the parking lot off to your left as you face the station entrance.

A new fast train between Xiamen and Fuzhou is available, leaving from the main Fuzhou station almost hourly, for under one way.

There is also a fast train from the South station to Shanghai via various towns in Northern Fujian, Wenzhou, Ningbo, and Hangzhou. Street cameras prevent taxis from stopping in certain areas, so if you are having trouble flagging down a taxi, look for a blue taxi stand sign to stand under. If you speak Chinese you can order a taxi by calling 968968, a charge in addition to the fuel charges should be added to the total.

Note that taxi drivers in this town are pretty dishonest and will try taking long routes, charging you for "airport parking" and various other scams. Cedric Thornton Eagles Jersey

Buses are often crowded, but run often and more or less everywhere for Most are air conditioned. If the bus you require is packed just wait until the next one, or the one after, it should only take 5 10 minutes, being stuck on a dangerously overloaded bus with several dozen/hundred people sweating all over you is an experience best avoided, especially in the summer months. However, you should be aware that bus service stops at 10pm, so the last buses are often very crowded and sometimes you cannot get one. Taxis and enterprising drivers will offer group rides from crowded bus stops to other parts of town, usually for system is in the process of being built, with the aim of being finished in 2015.

Wuyi Square (, Wuyi Guangchang). A central square with a huge statue of Mao. Visit at dawn or dusk to watch the ceremonial raising or lowering of the flag by highly trained and immaculate soldiers. Or visit at 6AM 8AM or late on weekends to watch at least half a dozen of martial arts, both armed and unarmed, being practiced. The founder of Uechi ryu karate, Uechi Kanbun, spent 13 years in Fuzhou, from 1897 to 1910. There are a group on the East side of the park who say their style is what he studied. A Taoist temple houses nationally important archives written in monks' blood as well as superb veggie restaurant. It is a 1,900 meter climb, or a 20 minutes cable car journey to the top. Overlooking the main square, a short walk to the hilltop which houses a pretty average temple. However, on the way up there is plenty of entertainment in the form of musicians and singers who congregate here to practice. The White Pagoda is also accessed by the same road behind Mao Tse Dong's statue and worth a look. There are several very good arts and crafts shops at the base of the hill. Haggle for all you are worth to obtain good prices. There is also an excellent Xinjiang restaurant near the top of the road up the hill. A bus ride from Fuzhou plus the last stage in a tuktuk or private cab (which will cost you around for a return trip) up the winding 17km road to the site. A forest park with big, waterfalls and stunning views over receding mountain ranges from a vertigo inducing suspension bridge. All this and monkeys to feed. This historic district in the heart of the city is one of the largest historic downtown areas in China, boasting about 268 ancient residences dating from Ming and Qing dynasties (1368 1911). Most of these residences feature the typical Foochow architectural style, which can only be found in the Eastern and Northeastern part of Fujian. The area was extensively restored around 2007, and as of 2012 additional work in neighbouring areas is still going on. Since 2011, ten of the finest residences require admission fees of 15 or 20 per person. A combo admission ticket including all ten is available for 120 (valid for 2 days). Many of the residences in the area are private homes, so tourists need permission from the residents to enter them. Hualin Temple is a Buddhist temple in downtown Fuzhou, which currently functions as a small museum and no longer provides Buddhist services. Built in 964 AD and survived over 10 centuries, this is the oldest wood architecture extant in South China (south of Yangtze River). The temple has a typical Tang dynasty style with simplicity and elegance. Despite its great historic and architectural importance, the site is rarely visited, but it is truly a hidden treasure for serious lovers of ancient Chinese architecture. He was appointed as a commissioner to clean up the trade in Canton, where he seized and burned a large supply of opium. This provoked the First Opium War, which China immediately lost. Lin was blamed for some of this, despite his orders, and exiled to Xinjiang. Later, his reputation was restored. There is a statue of him in a small park in the Southeast of the city.

A Ohio State University study found a parasite infects 60 percent the white tailed deer in Northeast Ohio, and more than 65 percent of free roaming cats tested. The Veterinary Preventive Medicine research was based primarily on tests of 444 deer and 200 free roaming cats.

The 60 minute film "Top secret doping how Russia makes its winners?" on national broacaster ARD featured first hand accounts and secret footage taken by former Russian Anti Doping Agency (RUSADA) employee Vitaly Stepanov and his wife, Yuliya Stepanova, a middle distance runner.

Stepanova, who is banned until January for a doping violation, accuses leading sport physician Sergey Portugalov of supplying banned products in exchange for five percent of her earnings. Willie Young Bears Jersey

Stepanov explained that "control officers" would be willing to accept money to "hush up" any positive testing of Russian athletes. According to the film, the couple have left Russia due to their allegations.

"Most athletes dope, around 99 percent. And you get everything," alleges discus thrower Yevgeniya Pecherina in one clip. "The least detectable the drug, the more expensive it is."

Three time Chicago Marathon winner Liliya Shobukhova, who is currently serving a doping ban, is filmed claiming she bought her place on the Russian team for the London Olympics in 2012 with a 450,000 euro payment to her coach. Shobukhova says Alexey Melnikov, one of the head coaches of Russian elite athletes,demanded the money to ensure officials turned a blind eye to a doping violation from 2011. The head of Russia's anti doping federation, Nikita Kamaev, dismissed the allegations.

"All athletes who make such claims have infringed doping regulations in the past," he said in the documentary. "Such people then contact journalists and tell stories. For professionals, such stories are only laughable."

Jeremy Akers was an All American offensive guard for Notre Dame in 1996. He played on the last Irish team to win a bowl game and spent time in the NFL and the now defunct XFL and NFL Europe before retiring following the 2005 season. He also married former Notre Dame and current AVP Tour volleyball player Angie Harris (now Akers) and lives in Redondo Beach, Calif.

We caught up with Akers earlier today to find out what he's been doing.

Jeremy Akers: "Loving the beach, loving life, traveling with my wife. I'm actually involved in a variety of areas. My main business focus is basically I work with privately held businesses and real estate developers that are looking for investors in their projects and then I'll package up their idea whether it is the company itself or the project they are looking to find investments for and then I'll take it out to a group of equity investors and shop it around to different areas that I know that look to invest in these types of things and I'll help to facilitate the introduction between the two groups and basically see what happens from there. That's the main business focus.

"For fun, I'm also involved with the Screen Actors Guild here in (Los Angeles). I do a couple different things with the Screen Actors Guild. For one, if there is a football player on TV, in commercials that you see, generally I'm one of those guys." Authentic Lance Moore Jersey

Insights: So you're going into acting and doing extra work now? Authentic Brice McCain Jersey

JA: "I'd say extras stuff but it is sports specific. I do it relating to football so a lot of it would be considered background work but we aren't considered background people in that we're covered under that contract. When it comes to football we're not paid like background players, we're paid a little bit higher because when it comes to football, we're doing something that requires a specific skill. But the production companies, they work through a couple different guys and then there is a group of guys that are former NFL and college athletes. Unfortunately, a lot of them are USC guys but seriously they are a lot of really good people. They basically are a group of us living here in LA and the production companies call a few different folks and say we need a football team for this commercial and can you put that together. doing a commercial for EBay.

"Over the course of the past couple months I've done two spots with Peyton Manning, something for ESPN, a thing with Reggie Bush. We've done two Nike commercials, one with LaDanian Tomlinson, Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates and another with Shawn Merriman and Stephen Jackson. It's a lot of fun but it is all with the Screen Actors Guild."

Insights: Have you seen yourself on camera yet?

JA: "Yeah. I've been a principle in quite a few commercials. I don't call it acting because there are people out there who are actors and are good at that kind of thing. For me, it is the fact that I'm a big guy and have a special skill. As far as myself goes, you can recognize me in different commercials, everything from EA Sports to Mastercard to Coors Light. There is a lot more than that but I can't think of it right now."

Insights: Getting back to what you do to pay the bills, what type of investments do you look for?

JA: "I consider there are two sides. On the real estate side of things, I get forwarded deals from a variety of sources, where a real estate developer needs an equity investor to help move a project forward. Speaking only on real estate, I'll take whatever project they are trying to do and go out and research as much as I can about the area where he is trying to do a specific build, be it a large scale residential development, a multi use commercial type structure and that person might need a certain amount of cash before he get the commercial financing or standard financing. I'll generally turn around and meet with high net worth individuals who can be on projects for a couple years and they'll come in with equity ownership into that project and a new LLC is formed and that LLC, a joint venture between the developer and the investor, is the one that runs the project and ensures the profit from it.

"On the small business side of things, I don't necessarily look for one particular type of company but ones that have good management teams or a project in an underserved area and something that is going to be a little unique or something in the skill set of a management team that is really going to make something stand out. These projects come from a variety of referral sources. Sports agents, they are going to get people sending them business plans where they are like 'Can you get your athlete involved in this?' It's not the sports agent's business to do that and they don't want the liability of referring a project or an investment to a client that is highly speculative and with a certain amount of risk. Those guys might turn that project over to me and say this is the guy, why don't you follow up with him. That's how we progress. That's the gist of what I do right there."

Insights: Is there anything else you're involved in?

JA: "Actually, I do motion video capture work for video games. Most of the video games that are out there right now, I have not worked on EA Sports but everybody else out there, I'm the lineman in the video games. They have different guys for different things but I've worked in motion capture for Microsoft, Sony and a couple other companies that do some smaller football games. I do the lineman stuff and then they transform it to the linemen actions in the game. I never know what the final result of where my exact motions get put into the system because the contract is at the upper level but it is used in the different games. But I've done work with Microsoft and Sony."
