The event was held at the prestigious Stanislavsky and Nemirovich Danchenko theatre, which has, over the course of more than 90 years, been the site of operas and ballets that have become a part of the nation's artistic heritage.

After Patrick Demarchelier immortalised China in the 2008 edition, Peter Beard drew a portrait of Botswana in 2009, and Terry Richardson covered Brazil in 2010, "The Cal 2011" features the creative genius of the multi faceted artist , whose sense for art and aesthetics is renowned throughout the world.

From his Paris studio, Lagerfeld created "Mythology", a calendar that reflects one of his deepest passions, that of Greek and Roman mythology, tales of the origins of humanity told through the adventures of gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines. On a voyage back through time transported by the universal language of photography, "Mythology" takes us to the roots of classical civilisation and takes the Pirelli Calendar back to the Old World, where nearly 140 years ago a company was born that was to become a multinational organisation with operations in over 160 nations around the world.

The 36 photos that make up the 2011 Calendar show 24 different subjects, including gods, heroes and myths. Fr Beigbeder: What made you choose the theme of Greek and Roman mythology?

: Because it's my favourite religion: one god for every occasion. I'm a polytheist: all present day religions are recent, but I prefer this mythology, which does without hell, without sin (an obstacle to happiness), and without forgiveness. We need to return to the disciplined form of beauty of Antiquity. Simone Weil said that Jesus was a direct descendant of Prometheus which caused a scandal at the time. I love the goddesses, because they were the first emancipated women. They had a right to everything. While the Germanic stories frightened me, Homer had a huge influence on me it's my educational source. What's so brilliant about ancient paganism is that there are lots of gods, the spirits move around, and there are heroes, demigods, genii, and nymphs. Humans were much closer to the gods than they are in the monotheistic religions. There's an ethics of beauty in Graeco Roman civilisation that we've lost today. It was erudite, but also sexy and simple. I'm also a fan of Sarah Moon she was the first to show her breast at the age of 72. She emanates great poetry. It's a form of viral marketing way ahead of its time. When they started, they made them for mechanics and truck drivers! But they soon became landmarks in the art world.

Although work to create a Newport Food Pantry has been going on since last summer, organizers and supporters of creating the more efficient and user friendly display and shopping facility was finally, formally and officially opened Sunday at its new headquarters on the grounds of the First Presbyterian Church on NE 12th.

Newport Mayor Mark McConnell, City Councilor Dick Beemer, County Commissioner Bill Hall, and Newport Chamber President Al Fitzpatrick were center stage at the cutting of the ceremonial ribbon as chamber ambassadors and Newport Pantry Board President Clay Creech and Pantry Manager Kathy Myers witnessed the milestone for the community. The Pantry also had a formal Dedication Service at the Church with ministers from Newport churches participating. Refreshments, including a large cake from JC Thriftway, was served to guests who also got a first hand tour of the Pantry.

The pantry was created to help Lincoln County Food Share concentrate more on gathering and assembling food rather than having to perform double duty distributing the food to the needy in Newport. Newport was the last community in Lincoln County to establish a food distribution facility that is set up to be a real shopping experience, rather than recipients mostly getting food boxed up in a pre determined way in a warehouse setting. Pantry Manager Kathy Myers said it a win for Food Share, and it a win for those in Newport needing help to put food on the table. Department of Agriculture surplus food program is being cut 40% just as unemployment benefits are again running out, peoples savings are gone, or nearly so, and the country is entering the fourth year of the worst recession in over 80 years. Myers and her food pantry board have been trying to get the word out that the pantry needs not only donated food, but also cash to buy specific food items that are in short supply. Myers is putting out a special call for help with peanut butter, cold cereal, oatmeal and shelf stable milks. She says they also need canned tuna. Box 1415, Newport, 97365. Waldport townspeople gathered in a tent, out of the wind and rain, to dedicate what will have to endure both for decades the official Waldport Centennial Mural that was formally unveiled on the side of the Samaritan Clinic in downtown Waldport on Saturday. The idea for a mural was first raised by Port of Alsea Chairman John Johnston (pictured in front of the mural, leather jacket) who rounded up a number of supporters who, in turn, convinced the Waldport City Council, the Port of Alsea, the Waldport Centennial Committee, the Waldport Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Alliance of Lincoln County, as well as a number of private donors, to fund a major part of the $20,000 artistic endeavor. Artist, and Waldport High School alumi, Casey McEneny (with microphone) described the mural as a visual journey that celebrates the Native American inhabitants of the Alsea Bay, to whom so much is owed by the American settlers who came to the area during the 19th century.
