American Airlines tightened their refund policy, but there’s a workaround most travelers don’t know about. If you book flights with miles instead of cash, you keep full flexibility even for last-minute travel.

Here’s the situation: American changed their 24-hour refund policy on July 29, 2026. You now need to book at least seven days before departure to get a cash refund when you cancel within 24 hours. Book closer than that and you’ll only get a travel credit.

But award tickets work differently. You can book with miles, cancel before departure, and get your miles back immediately. No fees, no expiring credits, no restrictions on when you booked.

This matters for business travelers who book backup flights, families dealing with uncertain plans, or anyone who needs flexibility close to their departure date.

The Miles Advantage:

One important warning: Don’t book overlapping flights on American. The airline prohibits duplicate, impossible, or speculative reservations. If your original flight is on American and you’re booking a backup, book that backup on a different airline. This avoids the duplicate booking issue entirely.
