サ ラリーマンの皆さん、グローバル化が進むこの現代。海外の会社との方とのやり取りも増えますよね。そういうときにいろんな会話が出来ると、距離も縮まり、 他の交渉もしやすくなるでしょう。そのためには幅広く単語を知っておく必要があります。それで、今回は「雇用」にまつわる英語を知っておきましょう。

「雇用と人」【大谷誠吾】

ここでは、人にまつわる雇用関係の英語をご紹介します。知っておくと便利な英語がたくさんありますので、よく覚えましょう。

・dynamic

「ダイナミック」と読みます。「精力的な」とか「活発な」という意味です。これはカタカナ英語としてもよく用いられていますが、ネイティブはエネルギー満タンというニュアンスを持って、この単語を用いています。そのため、元気な人という表すときにも使います。

例：This job requires a dynamic person, someone who will look for opportunities instead of just waiting around for them.

訳：この仕事は精力的な人物が求められる、ただ周りを見ているのではなく、機会を探すようなタイプの人間が。

・industrious

「インダストゥリアス」と読みます。「勤勉な」「よく働く」という意味です。熱心に働こうとするというイメージで使われています。

例：The Dutch settlements in Ottawa Country were founded by industrious farmers who objected to frivolous behavior such as dancing.

訳：オタワのオーストラリア植民地は、勤勉な農家によって見つけられた。彼らは、ダンスのような浅はかなことを嫌うような人々だ。

・promote

「プロモート」と読みます。「昇進する」「出世する」という意味になります。日本でも「promotion」(宣伝の)という意味でも使われていますが、出世するという意味でも使うことができるのです。「promote ＋ to」という形で使われるのが、一般的です。

例：He was promoted to the managerial position.

訳：彼は、管理職に昇進した。

・resign

「リザイン」と読みます。「リサイン」と言わないように気をつけましょう。「辞職する」とか「辞める」という意味になります。自分から使うことは控えたいですが、人の話などには使えますよね。

例：Because of controversy over his leadership style, Morton resigned from his job as president.

訳：モートンは論争におけるリーダーショップのスタイルのせいで、社長の職を辞任した。

「雇用とお金」【大谷誠吾】

・compensate

「カンペンセイト」と読みます。これは、「補償する」や「埋め合わせをする」を意味する言葉で、従業員に対して払うお金や、誰かが行った仕事の代わりに支払われるものをこの単語を用いて表せます。「compensate＋for」という形で用いられるのが一般的です。

例：My pay doesn’t properly compensate me for my efforts, but my other benefits, like health insurance, fill in the gap.

訳：わたしの給料は働きに対して適切に支払われないが、健康保険などの他の手当で、その差を埋め合わせている。

・enterprising

「エンタープライジング」と読みます。これは、お金を稼ぐ方法をクリエイティブする、つまり「企業心に富んだ」とか「冒険的な」という意味になります。

例：Immigrants are often among the most enterprising members of society, partly because anyone brave enough to make an overseas move is likely to be a risk-taker.

訳：移民はしばしば社会の最も意欲的な一員であるが、国を超えてくるほどの勇敢さとリスクをとる冒険家が重なる部分があるからだ。

・marginal

「マージナル」と読みます。「重要でない」「効果がない」という意味になります。

例：Our new advertising campaign had only marginal success, raising sales by a mere 3 percent.

訳：私たちの新しい宣伝キャンペーンは、効果がなく、販売率も3パーセントしか上昇しなかった。

・merit

「メリット」と読みます。「価値」「（誰かの働きに基づいた）成功」という意味です。日本でもよく聞く言葉の一つですよね。このmeritは、数が数えられない単語ですので、よく覚えておきましょう。

例：Pay raises at our company are based on merit, as determined by a committee of managers.

訳：我が社の昇給は、管理職の委員会の決定による価値に基づいたものである。

その他のビジネスで使える英語

・exploit

「エクプロイット」と読みます。「開拓する」とか「（利益のために）軽率に扱う」という意味になります。

例：Some companies move their factories to poor countries in order to exploit the desperation of people who are willing to work for very low wages.

訳：数ある会社の中には、設備を貧しい国に移し、低賃金で働こうとする人々を乱雑に扱うために、そうしている会社もある。

・incentive

「インセンティブ」と読みます。「刺激」とか「動機」という意味ですが、ネイティブは何かを動機づけさせる利益をイメージして使っていますね。

例：I had a lot of incentive to move to our new facility in Minnesota, because two of my brothers live there.

訳：わたしは二人の兄弟がミネソタ州に住んでいるのだが、新しい設備をみて、引っ越ししようと刺激を受けた。

・HR

このまま「エイチ・アール」と読みます。「Human Resources」の略で、「人材」を表します。そのため「HR contact」や「HR professionals」で、「人事担当者」を意味します。

例：I would like to speak to the person in HR professionals.

訳：人事担当者はいらっしゃいますか？
