練習してみました。

ひろった表現は、自分で3回使ってみれば覚える。

って言いますよね。

本当に3回で良いのか。

それとも人によって回数が違うのか。

先ず、補足です。
 

When the chips are down のchipsと言うのは、

ポーカーなどの賭け金として使うチップの事で、

チップを置いて（put down)しまうと、手を出し合って、勝ち負け、運命を決める事から来ているそうです。

→carry the weight of the world on one's shoulders
「世界の重さを肩に背負う」　→　「深刻な、または悲しそうな表情をしている」

→live up to (someone's expectations)
（人の期待に）応える

→get into the spirit of things
その場の雰囲気に和む、その気で居る事を示す
前回紹介した時の記事です♪

→a wet-blanket
興ざめさせる人、パーティーなどで楽しい雰囲気なのを台無しにする人
a party pooper や a spoilsport とも言えるそうです。

よくやった　（褒め言葉で、こう言うそうです）

→Like father, like son.
カエルの子はカエル　父が父なら、子は子だ～親子の血は．．．なんとか．．．？？？
Like mother, like daughterとも言うようです。

今回紹介した、chip off the old blockに関係している熟語に
follow in someone's footstepsと言うのがあるそうで、
これは、字のごとく、「人の足跡をたどる」
人のやっている事や言っている事を自分もやる、模倣する．．．という意味だと思います。

→Not that (＋ clause)
（内容を入れて）～って事じゃなくて、～って事じゃないんですよ～

→put one's foot in one's mouth
余計な事を言ってしまう、恥ずかしい事を言ってしまう

→count on somebody
（人、誰かに）頼る、当てにする

→break-up
縁切り、お別れ、恋人とのお別れ
動詞として使って、break up with your boyfriend で、
彼氏と別れるってことですね。　私は三年前に．．．broke up with my girlfriend.

→lift up somebody, lift somebody up
人を元気にさせる
lift up somebody's heartとも言うそうです。

→Last, but not least.
「最後に、といっても重要性が一番最後という訳ではないが」
色んな事を順番に述べていって、最後の項目に行く時に使われる表現だそうです。
「最後になりましたが」くらいの意味だと思います。

（誰かに、人に）頼る

→big time
とっても、大いに、非常に．．．度合いが物凄い事を言うのでしょうね。

→has a heart of gold
優しい心を持っている

→keep your head above water
財政的になんとかやっていく、破産しないでいる、おぼれないでいる

どんな事でもする

今回使った表現の中に、

の形は、lotusさんのブログで見かけた表現でしたね♪^^

ちなみに、

oxymoron 矛盾用法

という単語は、何かの映画で最初に出くわして．．．

例えば、熱いハズの火　を冷たいと表現する、

みたいなもんだそうです。

今日は、

'care'という単語の入った熟語を練習したいと思います。

どこかで、

多分Alex & Emmaという映画の中で

聞いたフレーズかなと思います。

I couldn't care less.

またまた、freedictionary.comによると、次のような意味があるそうです。

does not care at all

全く気にしない

Answer.comによると、こんな意味があるそうです。

be completely indifferent

完全に興味がない

★I know how this feels. 

I once cared about a friend of mine back in Texas. 

He was a good friend of mine. 

But, we had a little disagreement over some trifle things 

and we sort of drifted away from each other. 

So, when I heard that he was having some problems over something, 

I felt exactly like the phrase right here:

I couldn't care less what happens to him.
 

こういった気持ちは分かります。

かつてテキサスに居た頃、大事に思ってた友達がいました。

良い友達でした。

でも、些細な事で意見が食い違い、

なんとなくお互いから離れていってしまったんです。

だから、彼が何かの事で悩んでるって聞いても、

このフレーズと同じように感じたんです。

彼に何が起ころうと、オレの知ったこっちゃない、ってね。

で、それ以下の関心が持てないって事は、

関心度があまりにも小さくて、何についての関心度であるにせよ、

その時の関心度のそれよりも、下のレベルで関心を持つ事が出来ない、

って事ですね。

（私の関心度はこんなに低いんだよ～という事でしょうか）

★Even though I see that Bob is suffering from the overweight problem 

and trying to lose some weight, 

I have to say I couldn't care less.

もう、言い訳を聞くのにいい加減、うんざりなんですよね。

行った事を実行出来なかったら、いっつもで。

もう少し、気持ちを切り離したカンジの使い方の例を試してみます。

「全く関心が無い」方を

試してみたいと思います。

私が気にする限りでは

freedictionary.comによると、次のような意味があるそうです。

If you say that someone can do something umpleasant for all you care, 

you mean that you do not care about what happens to them.

誰かが思わしくない事をしているのが「for all I care」というのは、

つまり、それをしてる人に何が起ころうと気にしない（知ったこっちゃない）という事

これは、Who cares?（誰の知った事か！）と言う表現に似ていますね。

★Oh, that Bob! 

He's been eating those fast-food meals for ever. 

Does he care about his own health? 

I don't think so. 

Man! He can die from an heart-attack or a stroke or any kind of cardiovascular disease for all I care.

今日のは、形の似ている二つのidiomsです。　

最初のは、これです。

get into the spirit of something

～の気分になる

社交的な場面で、人に話したり踊ったり、その場にあった服をきたりして、

そこに居る事を楽しんでるって事を示す

最初に耳にしたのは「ナイトライダー」と言って、

１９８０年代のアメリカのテレビドラマがあるんですけど、その中ででした。

そこでは、get into the spirit of thingsの形で使われていました。

★Hey, Sally. I'm happy to see that you are getting into the spirit of things, 

socializing with other students. 

I don't know how you do it, though. 

They were so harsh on you about the way you were just a month ago.

物事のリズムに入る

freedictionary.comによると、次のような意味だそうです

To become familiar with an activity or situation so that you can start doing it well or enjoying it.

物事や状況に慣れて、それを上手くやったり、楽しんだり出来るようになる事

どうやら、このswingというのには、

'rhythm'(リズム)という意味も有るらしく、

それが関係しているのかも知れませんね。

これは、get back into the swing of things として、

元の慣れていた状態に「戻る」とする事も出来るようです。

★After I left Dallas, 

I rarely had a chance to use English as a communicative tool, 

so it was hard for me to keep it up. 

Then I met some great people on the net. 

Now that I'm using English again,

この表現はよく、I can't quite put my finger on itの形で耳にしました。

何かこう．．．写真を見てて．．．

あ！　ここが変だぞって、指を指して言い当てる～みたいなカンジでしょうか？

ほらほら！　ここ、ここ！　ここが変なんだってぇ～！ってね^^　

指をそこにピタッと置いて．．．みたいなカンジかな？

★When I saw Sally, I felt something was really wrong about her.

I couldn't quite put my finger on it, 

but now that I think about it, 

I think her complexion was a little pale. 

Well, now that I see it, I wonder how I didn't see it then. 

I hope she is OK now.

サリーを見たとき、彼女、何かがとっても変な気がしたんです。

その時はどうも、これが変だぁっての、自分でも分からなかったんですけど、

今考えてみれば、顔色がちょっと悪かったみたいです。

ん～、それが分かっちゃうと、なんでその時分かんなかったのか、自分でも考えちゃいます。

彼女、大丈夫だと良いけど。

★After I wrote that comment, I looked back at what I put there. 

I read it out and heard it through my voice. 

I felt something was really strange about it.

I wasn't able to put my finger on it first, 

but then I realized that I was making a grammatical mistake. 

Oh, what a bummer! How embarrassing!

あのコメント書いた後、書いたモノを読み返しました。

声に出して読んで、自分の声に耳を傾けて。

何かが変な気がしたんですよね。

最初はそれが、何が変なのかどうも分からなかったんですけど、

でも気付いたんですよね、文法的な間違いをしてたんだぁって。

あぁ、なんてこった！恥ずかしい～＞＜；

This is rather a proverb than an idiom, but it may still come in handy.
これは熟語と言うよりは、むしろ諺ってカンジですけど、まぁ、便利かもなので．．．

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

馬を水辺まで導く事は出来るが、無理に水を飲ませる事は出来ない。

This means as follows:

You can propose a course of action to someone, but you can't force that person to accept it.

人にこうやったらという事を提案する事は出来るが、無理にそれを受け入れさせる事は出来ない。

つまり、無理にやらせても、上手くいかないって事でしょうか。

一度ふざけ始めると、勉強に集中させるのは難しくて．．．　

まぁ、よく言うように、「馬を水辺まで導く事は出来るが、無理に水を飲ませる事は出来ない。」って事ですね。

歯が痛いって言うんですけど、だから、凄く心配で．．．

歯医者に連れて行こうと思うんですけど、聞かなくて。

説得しようとするんですけど、一歩たりとも動かなくて．．．　

まぁ、無理やり連れていっても良いんですけど、なんか、それも良い事じゃない気がするし。

「馬を水辺まで導く事は出来るが、無理に水を飲ませる事は出来ない。」って事ですかね。
