"Miranda was rear-ended, but is totally fine," Kerr's spokeswoman said in a statement.

Kerr's Australian publicist Annie Kelly told media there that the model was traveling on a Los Angeles freeway on Monday when the accident occurred, and was in pain from the collision.

Kerr, 29, is also the face of Australian airline Qantas and has her own line of skin-care products.

Kerr married British actor Orlando Bloom in 2010. She gave birth to the couple's first child, a boy, in 2011.

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The new governor of the Bank of Canada said on Thursday that interest rates will rise one day, but he stopped short of repeating his predecessor's explicit guidance on the likely need for rate hikes, rather than cuts, in the future.

In his first public appearance since taking the reins at the central bank on Monday, Stephen Poloz said he sees no immediate risk from current rock-bottom interest rates, although he did not want loose monetary policy to last for too long.

Many analysts had expected Poloz to be more dovish than previous Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, who stepped down last month after a year beaming out a clear message that the bank's next move would be a rate increase.

The message from Poloz could be interpreted either way, the analysts said.

"Low (rates) for hopefully not too long gives you the outcomes you need to get through this crisis and then as the world unfolds we get back to normal, and that's our outlook," Poloz told the House of Commons Finance Committee.

"We don't see evidence that those risks (of low interest rates) are manifesting themselves in a threatening way at this stage, but they'll be carefully monitored, and that trade-off continues to be made as we go along."

Not yet accustomed to Poloz' folksy speaking style, some economists concluded he was holding the line on monetary policy while others detected a slightly more dovish tone.

"Overall, I don't think we're going to see a big change in stance from the Bank of Canada come July," said Krishen Rangasamy, senior economist at National Bank Financial.

Poloz, who previously headed Canada's export credit agency, has a first speech as governor on June 19 and his first rate decision in mid-July, both events where he may be able to put a clearer stamp on any policy priorities.

He said on Thursday that the central bank needed to "nurture" the economy through a phase he likened to postwar reconstruction and emphasized that inflation below the bank's 2 percent target - it is currently at 0.4 percent - is just as much a concern as above-target inflation.

That provided fodder for those who think he'll back away from any rate-hike talk.

"A speech that is all about 'nurturing' and the BoC's role in building confidence throughout this process suggest a policy leaning toward at least a less hawkish BoC than under the last months of Carney's tenure," Scotiabank economists Derek Holt and Dov Zigler said in a note to clients.

CARNEY'S MOVES

Carney was the first central banker in the Group of Seven industrialized nations to raise rates after the global financial crisis, with three rate hikes in 2010. But the bank has held its main policy rate at 1 percent since then, the longest period of unchanged interest rates since the 1950s.

In April 2012, the bank again began signaling intentions to tighten monetary policy, and that bias remains in place, although some argue it has been so watered down in recent months that it has become almost meaningless.

Analysts in a Reuters poll published on May 23 predicted, on average, that the next interest rate increase will come in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Poloz sounded upbeat about the prospects for further growth in Canada and for the recovery in the U.S. housing market.

The Bank of Canada has long predicted that growth in Canada will be driven more by exports than by domestic demand, which fueled the quick recovery from recession.

Poloz said he first expected foreign demand to recover, followed by stronger export performance, improved confidence and then business expansion.

"This sequence may already be underway," he said.

"We are now seeing signs of recovery in some important external markets, notably the United States and Japan, and there is continued growth in emerging-market economies."

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Co-writer-director Joseph Kosinski ("TRON: Legacy") digs all the way to the back of the refrigerator for "Oblivion," taking leftover bits of "The Matrix," "WALL-E," "2001," "Moon" and "Planet of the Apes," among countless other science-fiction classics, and putting them into a slick, shiny and state-of-the-art crock pot.

The results looks amazing, but most of the ideas that resonate will feel very familiar and more than a bit warmed-over.

You'll see one if not both of the movie's big twists coming, and while a case could be made that "Oblivion" will make the boldest anti-drones statement of any fictional film this year, it's a chilly movie that never draws you in enough to get fully invested in what's happening.

Tom Cruise opens the film with a head-spinning torrent of exposition, but it boils down to this: It's 2077. Sixty years earlier, alien invaders wrecked the moon, destroying much of Earth. What was left of the planet got trashed by nukes used to fight off the E.T.s, and now most of the population lives on a moon of Saturn.

The only people left on Earth are Jack (Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough, "W.E."), who live in a high-tech house in the clouds and whose memories were wiped five years earlier.

He goes out every day to repair the drones that scan the earth for the remnants of the alien Scavengers; she reports their progress to Sally (Melissa Leo, with a ludicrous twang) at Mission Control. Unbeknownst to Victoria, Jack still remembers meeting up with a mystery woman (Olga Kurylenko of "To the Wonder") at the Empire State Building back before the war.

He's also built a secret hideaway in the mountains, a lakeside cabin where he can shoot hoops, listen to old vinyl LPs and squirrel away the books he has found in his travels.

One day, Jack happens upon the top of the Empire State Building, which the Scavengers are using as a homing beacon; following the coordinates being sent out, he finds a crashed spaceship, but the passengers aren't aliens - they're humans. And one of them is the lady from Jack's dreams.

This discovery sets in motion Jack's new understanding of who he is and what has happened to Earth, and "Oblivion" might have worked better if it weren't so proud of these revelations that most audience members will figure out long before the characters do.

Kosinski is great with the doohickeys - Jack's transport, his fold-up motorcycle, that house of the future - but neither the plot nor the characters click the way they should. (And I say that as someone who actually liked "TRON: Legacy.")

Cruise has to spend most of the film playing a literal blank slate, but even after he starts filling in his own memories, the character remains as vague as ever. And poor Morgan Freeman, who turns up late in the film, gets saddled with some astonishingly clichd dialogue. (That YouTube reel of characters in dozens of movies saying the line, "You look like shit," just got three seconds longer.) M83's score is mostly effective, but even it feels unoriginal, like the love child of Daft Punk's "TRON: Legacy" music and the "Inception" BWAAAAH.

There's a weirdly sexist tinge as well, with the female characters being either nefarious or inert (not to mention a triangular big bad alien presence that could have been designed by Judy Chicago). "Oblivion" also indulges in one of those have-your-cake endings that are so popular of late; not to give anything away, but this is another movie that promises a gutsy, powerful denouement only to give the audience a reassuring wink and a high-five.

The stink of studio notes and focus groups pervades throughout, in fact - that awkward narration at the beginning shares information that Jack offers up again later in the film; one imagines a test audience complaining that they didn't understand what was happening, and the studio deciding to overlay all that clunky exposition up front. Just a theory, but I'd put five bucks on it.

If the dialogue and the concepts of "Oblivion" had been as fresh and powerful as its art direction, we'd really have something here. Instead, it's something borrowed packaged inside something new.

Djokovic is trying to win his first championship at Roland Garros to complete a career Grand Slam. Nadal is trying to become the only man to win eight titles at one major tournament.

"You are not playing a match for a title. You are just playing a match to be in the final," Nadal said. "Big difference."

Theirs is not the only semifinal Friday, of course. No. 4-seeded David Ferrer of Spain plays No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the other. Djokovic vs. Nadal goes on court first at 1 p.m. local time (6 a.m. EDT), and here are five things one per set, perhaps to watch:

ONLY A SEMIFINAL

The past 11 matches between Djokovic and Nadal were in championship matches, including five at Grand Slam tournaments (Djokovic won three). But while Djokovic is ranked and seeded No. 1, Nadal slipped in the rankings while missing seven months with a left knee injury and was seeded only No. 3 in Paris. The draw could have placed Nadal on either half of the field, but he wound up on Djokovic's side.

WHO IS FAVORED?

Their head-to-head history, and Nadal's 57-1 career mark at Roland Garros, certainly seem to bolster the Spaniard's chances. This is their 35th match against each other, and Nadal leads 19-15 overall, 12-3 on clay, 6-3 in Grand Slam tournaments, 4-0 at the French Open (including last year's final). But after losing his first nine matches against Nadal on clay, Djokovic has won three of their last six, including the most recent encounter, in the final at Monte Carlo in April. There are those who think Djokovic has gained a mental edge against Nadal, the way Nadal did against Roger Federer in that rivalry.

HOW LONG WILL THEY GO?

These two guys played the longest major final, by time, at the Australian Open in 2012, going for 5 hours, 53 minutes. One reason: They engage in looooooong points, because both are superb court-coverers and defenders. No ball is out of reach for either. Djokovic's arms and legs seem elastic, Nadal's motor never slows. Djokovic declared right after his quarterfinal victory, "I'm ready to play five sets." Asked about that Australian epic, he said: "Do you want to see more than six hours' match? I'm sure I don't want to be six hours on the court."

EXTERNAL FACTORS

The forecast for Friday shows no chance of rain, which would be to Nadal's liking. When the sun is out and the court and tennis balls stay dry, it allows Nadal to slather his heavy topspin on his big forehand cuts, making that left-handed shot all the more dangerous. The 2012 French Open final was interrupted by showers, and Djokovic took eight consecutive games in on stretch. But eventually, play was halted Sunday, and when they resumed Monday, Nadal finished off his four-set victory. There's one intangible to keep in mind: Djokovic's childhood coach he likened her to a "second mother" died last weekend, and he says he wants to win the title in her honor.

THE OTHER GUYS

The second semifinal features one particularly intriguing story line. Tsonga is trying to become the first man from France to win the country's Grand Slam tournament since Yannick Noah whose son, Joakim, plays for the NBA's Chicago Bulls did it 30 years ago. Expect a loud and proud crowd to give Tsonga plenty of support against Ferrer, who is 0-5 in Grand Slam semifinals. They have very different styles. Ferrer is a metronome, racing back and forth along the baseline to extend points with little flash. The charismatic Tsonga, who beat Roger Federer in the quarterfinals, plays a far more aggressive get-to-the-net game.

TEL AVIV, June 4 (Reuters) - Israel's stock market must find ways to attract more high tech companies, to prevent foreign firms from swooping on unlisted start-ups and making off with the country's talent, a government panel urged on Tuesday.

After Silicon Valley, Israel is widely considered the world's second-largest high-tech centre - but not one of its estimated 5,000 start-ups went for an initial public offering (IPO) last year. By contrast, 66 high tech Israeli companies were bought for around $10 billion in total.

"We are trying to provide a financial infrastructure in order for start-ups to grow in Israel instead of being sold abroad," said Sraya Orgad, co-chairman of the committee appointed by the Israel Securities Authority (ISA) to promote investment in public companies.

There are several reasons behind Israeli firms' reluctance to head for the stock market, including the cultural tradition that entrepreneurs in the country prefer to work on small start-ups than run big companies and so tend to sell and move on to the next project rather than consider IPOs.

In addition the venture capitalists who fund start-ups tend to prefer the quick exit afforded by a sale rather than a drawn-out IPO process. And foreign firms who prefer to pay for new technology rather than develop it themselves know that there are plenty of companies looking to be acquired for the right price.

As a result both the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) and Israel's economy are suffering.

Trading volumes on the TASE dropped in 2012 to a daily average turnover of $279 million from a daily average of $482 million in 2011. The exchange took another hit this week when Mellanox Technologies - whose products allow databases, servers and computers to talk to each other - requested to be delisted from TASE and trade only on Nasdaq.

Meanwhile, Israel's economic growth rate is slowing, from 4.6 percent in 2011 to 3.2 percent in 2012. GDP is forecast to grow 2.8 percent in 2013.

The ISA-approved committee recommended setting up a new "Elite Tech" index on the TASE to tempt companies with a market cap above $68 million with various exemptions such as tax benefits and allowing reports in English.

The committee also proposed enabling venture capital funds to trade under the model of closed-end mutual funds. Such funds may invest up to 30 percent of the capital raised from the public in the securities of privately held Israeli high-tech companies and 70 percent in high-tech firms traded in Tel Aviv.

"The need to undertake measures to help Israeli R&D companies raise capital is unquestionable, " said ISA Chairman Shmuel Hauser.

Co-chairman Orgad added: "Three companies (going public) a year for the next three years would be a success," Orgad said.

The committee said it would field comments in the next few months and issue its final report by early October.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Velvet Underground, the 1960s avant-garde rock band, has settled a fight with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts over the rights to an iconic pop art image of a banana that graced the band's best-known album.

Velvet Underground sued the Warhol Foundation in January 2012 after reports that the foundation was planning to license the banana design for cases, sleeves and bags for Apple Inc's iPhone and iPad.

The settlement, disclosed in a filing in federal court in New York on Wednesday, averts a trial that was set to begin July 29. The court filing did not give the terms of the settlement.

Velvet Underground, founded by John Cale and Lou Reed, collaborated with Warhol beginning in the 1960s. Warhol designed the banana image and the band featured it on its first album, "The Velvet Underground & Nico," in 1967.

While the band broke up in 1972, the album lived on and is ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as 13th on its list of greatest albums of all time.

In the lawsuit, the Velvet Underground claimed exclusive use of the banana design for licensed merchandising. The lawsuit sought damages and an injunction to prevent the foundation from licensing the image.

The foundation, which was set up under Warhol's will to advance the visual arts, took ownership of his copyrights in 1987. It has in the past licensed material to companies including Levi Strauss & Co and Campbell's Soup Co, according to the foundation's website.

In the lawsuit, it countered that the Velvet Underground had no enforceable trademark rights to the image.

The Velvet Underground also asked the court to rule that the Warhol Foundation had no copyright to the banana image. But in September the judge, Alison Nathan, found that an agreement by the Warhol Foundation not to sue Velvet Underground for copyright infringement nixed any copyright questions.

Joshua Paul, a lawyer for the foundation at the law firm Collen IP, declined to comment on the settlement. Clifford James, a lawyer for Velvet Underground, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Miami Heat basketball star LeBron James, 28, a four-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player, came in this year in the number two slot, earning a total of $56.5 million.

The list is calculated by combining estimated salary, winnings and endorsements. Mayweather's total earnings are even more impressive considering he received no endorsement money either this year or last.

James' $56.5 million income combines a $17.5 million salary with an additional $39 million in endorsements.

Golfer Tiger Woods, the highest paid U.S. athlete from 2004, when the list was first published, through 2011, dropped to the No. 5 slot on this year's list, earning $40.8 million.

Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano came in as the 50th highest-paid U.S. athlete with an estimated $18.2 million.

Candidates for the list must be U.S. citizens and compete in a U.S.-based league.

Internationally, soccer great David Beckham is estimated to earn more than $48 million, landing him the top spot on the magazine's annual list of highest-paid athletes worldwide, The International 20.

PARIS (Reuters) - When Kevin Anderson takes to the court to face Milos Raonic in the third round of the French Open on Friday he will not just be representing his nation but a vast continent.

The 6ft 8in South African is the only man from Africa currently in the world's top 100 and there are only two from the continent in the top 200.

On the women's side only 61st-ranked Chanelle Scheepers, a first-round loser at Roland Garros, is the only African woman competing in the higher echelons of the sport.

There are obvious social and economic reasons why tennis has not established roots in Africa, yet Anderson hopes that he can start to raise the profile of the sport there.

"I hope by continuing to do well here people get to see that it's possible to make it from Africa," Anderson, ranked a career-high 25th in the world after an impressive year which started by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open.

"Obviously South Africa has had more opportunities than some of the other countries in Africa which is unfortunate because there is a lot of interest in tennis in the continent.

"But it's not easy because the tennis scene is in Europe and with the exchange rates it's expensive.

"There's no easy way in."

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has set up training centres in Senegal and Burundi while Anderson was helped in his development by attending one in Pretoria.

He is keen to do what he can and while reaching his first ATP claycourt final in Casablanca, Morocco earlier this year took time to visit a new ITF high-performance centre which later this year will house 20 of Africa's elite junior players.

Frank Couraud, who works on the ITF's international development projects, said awareness of tennis was spreading.

"I was at our East Africa centre in Burundi," he told Reuters. "I asked a 12-year-old girl if Serena Williams was her favourite player. She replied that she preferred (Victoria) Azarenka.

"The point is they have a lot more access to media and have experience watching matches."

Morocco has provided several top players down the years including Younes El Aynaoui, who reached two grand slam quarter-finals, and Hicham Arazi, once a Roland Garros quarter-finalist.

However, few African-based players have come through since and Anderson said he was encouraged by new developments like the one he saw while in north Africa.

"It was great playing in Morocco this year and seeing that there is an ITF centre that they started there," he said.

"I played a lot at the ITF centre in Pretoria growing up so hopefully that will help them regain their strength.

"It was just good to support the kids and see them and meet them and it definitely makes it easier for them if they can see someone who they can follow in the top 100.

LONE WARRIOR

"Hopefully if I can inspire people to play tennis in Africa that would be great."

While Anderson is the lone warrior in the senior singles events here, several African juniors are hoping to make a mark.

South African Wayne Montgomery is 11th in the junior world rankings while 15-year-old Egyptian Sandra Samir is playing in the girls singles.

For now Anderson's priority is beating Raonic to reach the French Open last 16 for the first time.

Both are giants, have huge serves and powerful forehands.

"It will be a different type of tennis," said Anderson who did not drop serve in his four-set victory in the second round against Evgeny Donskoy.

"We are similar in that we both have big serves so it will be about taking what chances come along."

The fossil of Aurornis xui was found last year in a museum at the Fossil and Geology Park in Yizhou, China, long after a farmer first dug it up in the Liaoning Province. The feathery specimen represents the most ancient of the avialans, the group that includes birds and their relatives since their split from nonavian dinosaurs.

The research also reconfirms the birdlike fossilas an avialan, a classification that was challenged by some recent research. []

Not everyone agrees that the new specimen is strictly a bird. "In my opinion, it's a bird," study author Pascal Godefroit, a paleontologist at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels, told . Even so, he added, "The differences between birds and [nonavian] dinosaurs are very thin."

"Traditionally, we have defined birds as things like Archaeopteryx and closer to things like modern birds," vertebrate paleontologist Luis Chiappe of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, who was not involved in the study, told LiveScience. "If you stick to the definition, this thing is not earliest known bird," Chiappe said, but that's missing the point, he said. What matters, is that it's a very interesting animal that "still helps us understand better the origin of birds," he said.

Aurornis xui was a feathered dinosaur that lived during the Middle Jurassic period about 150 million years ago, analysis shows. It was about 1.6 feet (0.5 meter) from beak tip to tail tip, and possessed small, sharp teeth and long forelimbs.

The creature probably couldn't fly, Godefroit said, but may have used its wings to glide between trees. The fossil's feathers aren't well-preserved, but the hip bones and other features strongly suggest it was a relative of modern birds, he said.

The researchers assert that Aurornis displaces Archaeopteryx as the , placing Archaeopteryx further along in the avialan lineage. Since Archaeopteryx was a flying creature, its placement among avialans means dinosaurs would have only had toonce during evolutionary history.

The new findings also classify another family of birdlike dinosaurs, known as Troodontidae, as a sister group to the avialans. This reshuffling of the bird-dinosaur family tree suggests birds and nonavian dinosaurs diverged in Asia during the Middle to Late Jurassic.

The findings are detailed in the May 30 issue of the journal Nature.
