The end of identity politics [Simon Kuper]

"It is the economy, stupid"
In the past, voters wanted leaders at least pretended to share their values.
However, that is over leaving the economy only issue in politics.

Leaders got elected by their views on sex, race or which god they believed.
The shift from identity politics to economics happened because voters stopped to expecting leaders to be role models. and it was sealed on September 15 2008 when Lehman Brothers collapsed.

For example, each new era has its own scandals. These days, scandals related to being cozy with rich people.

Unfortunately, voters are not equipped to judge economic issues. They are left having to make blind choices. It is a muddle.

Reference
Simon Kuper, The end of identity politics, FT weekend magazine 12/13 November, p7

It is interesting article for me, because Japanese voters are still influenced by politicians (and famous people) moral about sex scandals. I guess that the reason of difference between Europe and Japan is cultural background about respect others. In Europe, people tend to respect others even if they have different opinions. But, Japanese tend to boycott the others if in the same case. They do not separate opinions from personality.

It is completely true that voters can not judge economical issues, because economy is more complicated because of globalization and specification. So, what they have to do is to think by themselves through reading academic books or listening professionals' opinions and comparing them.
