Food City is bringing back a regional

Food City to serve as exclusive outlet for Kern's Bread products Knoxville News Sentinel

Food City is bringing back a regional favorite to its shelves with the return of Kern's Bread.

The classic brand, which has more than 144 years of history in Knoxville, is the latest iconic product line to be revived by the Abingdon, Va. based chain of grocery stores.

Last Olympic Kevin Shattenkirk Jersey spring, Food City added Kay's Ice Cream, originally based in Knoxville, to its list of products, and in January, it did the same with Terry's Snacks, originally produced in Bristol, Va.

"We think it makes good sense. These brands at one time were the No. 1 brands in their particular markets. They got phased out by some larger companies, and that's why Food City is glad to be able to be bringing these back for folks here in this region," said Steve Smith, president and CEO of Food City's parent company, K VA T Food Stores Inc.

At a press conference held Thursday at Sara Lee Bakeries, 2110 Chapman Highway, Smith announced that Food City would serve as the exclusive Kern's Bread outlet, selling a complete line of white, whole wheat, honey wheat and lite wheat breads and buns as well as a line of fresh baked cakes, including single serve snack cakes, angel food and pound cakes.

The Chapman Highway site produced Kern's products for decades.

"I think Kern's has been such a popular brand in the greater Knoxville market," Smith said. "It just makes all the sense in the world to be able to partner with Sara Lee Bakeries to bring the bread back with its batter whipped recipe and all of its varieties."

The products will be produced at the Chapman Highway facility, which currently makes the Sara Lee line of rolls and buns. A marketing campaign is accompanying the Kern's relaunch that will promote the brands using new advertising and dusting off popular ads from the early 1970s that featured a Kern's truck driver and a diner waitress he befriends.

Former Knoxville Mayor Peter Kern founded the bakery in 1864, operating the family owned business from the present Hotel S. Oliver on Union Avenue until the new bakery was later constructed on Chapman Highway.

Ron Thomason, zone vice president of Sara Lee Corp., the latest owner of the Kern's brand, called Food City's strategy "very exciting."

"It was a fantastic brand with a lot of heritage and history," Thomason said, adding that the announcement would secure and maintain jobs at the Chapman Highway facility. It currently employs 118 but, he said, there is capacity to add hours and shifts as the brand grows.

Less than a year after resurrecting Kay's Ice Cream, Smith said the brand had captured 20 percent of Food City's ice cream market.

"We think Terry's and Kern's will do the same," he said.

Food City is working on adding more regional brands, which could be announced before the end of the year.

"I grew up here in the Tri Cities," Smith said. "We at Food City think we are more in touch with the regional tastes and flavors."

K VA T operates 96 retail food outlets throughout the tri state regions of Southeast Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee. Also remember during a period during WWII that you got your Olympic Patrick Kane Jersey bread un sliced, just a whole loaf. Don't know why really, I guess it was said to utilize less manpower, but my thoughts were it was develolped by some devious manufacturer to sell bread knives. Only, it wasn't in Knoxville; it was in London, Kentucky. I am from London and moved to East Tennessee 7 years ago. We had a Kern's Bakery there for as long as I can remember. Lot's of memories associated with it. Also, I had a good friend who drove a Kern's delivery truck in the 70's. We loved the Mama Kern's commercials. Thank you Food City for bringing back the memories. Please bring back the Mama Kern's commercials.

I remember the Kern's merry go round coming to my church kindergarten. That was probably the highlight of the year for us kids. and we all got one of those cool mini loaves to take home (or, more usually, eaten at kindergarten or before reaching home). Sometimes, we'd get one of the "weird" loaves, called "rye" and "pumperknickel" (which didn't taste anything like pumpkin). No one ever knew what to make of them.

Thanks, Food City, for bringing back Kerns and Kay's. Now, if you could only get the manufacturers of Ne Hi, Fanta, and Orange Crush and maybe Mountain Dew? to revert to their original recipes, I think I could die a happy man.

I remember the Kern's merry go round coming to my church kindergarten. Now, if you could only get the manufacturers of Ne Hi, Fanta, and Orange Crush and maybe Mountain Dew? to revert to their original recipes, I think I could die a happy man.

So glad to hear of Kern's return to K'town.

I did a story on "AJ and Mavis" for PM Magazine at WATE TV back in the early 80's for the World's Fair, in fact, I'm in the two commercials they shot for the World's Fairs (Kerns's was the Official Bread sponsor for the fair). learned a lot about AJ and Mavis and their personalities, just wonderful people. I still go back and look at all the commercials and the story from time to time.

The ad executive who played AJ passed away several years ago, and I never heard what happened to the actress who played Mavis.

As far as feel good stories go

father touched

As far as feel good stories go this Jonathan Quick USA Hockey Jersey won't rival The Batkid saving Gotham City, but it has its share of compassion, class and humanity.

In last week's loss to the Panthers, 49ers safety Eric Reid sustained a concussion when he had a violent helmet to helmet collision with Carolina's 245 pound running back Mike Tolbert. After the blow, Reid, who is about 30 pounds lighter than Tolbert, fell limply to the turf, was motionless for several seconds and stayed on the field for about five minutes.

As the 49ers' medical staff huddled around Reid, Tolbert joined them on one knee. When Reid finally arose, authenticusahockey.com/WOMENS-OLYMPIC-DUSTIN-BROWN-JERSEY.html Tolbert patted him on the helmet, hugged him and appeared to offer a few encouraging words.

Watching at home in Prairieville, La., Eric Reid Sr. was profoundly touched by Tolbert's kindness toward his son.

"I've got a whole lot of respect for Mike Tolbert," Reid Sr. said in a phone interview. "A whole lot of respect. I don't say this about a lot of people because respect is earned, it's not given. When he reacted by kneeling down beside my son the whole time until he got up, that brought tears to my eyes. You just don't see that type of stuff. That affected me so much."

Reid Sr. was so moved that he's since sent letters of appreciation to Tolbert's agent, Joel Turner, and Panthers running backs coach Jim Skipper, with whom he shares a mutual friend. He also posted on a Panthers message board to tell fans how much Tolbert gesture meant to him.

It's a story of compassion, appreciation and decency. And Turner, in his 14th year as an NFL agent, said he's never experienced anything quite like it.

"I'm just as touched by Mr. Reid doing what he did, as he is touched by what Mike did," Turner said. "To have a parent of a player reach out to you and want to tell how impressed they are by one of your clients? Never happened before."

Turner's brother, Justin, who works with him at Carolinas Athletic Management Agency, expressed similar sentiments.

"Mike's obviously a good man he's first class all the way," he said. John Carlson Youth Jersey "Always has been. You look at Mike taking time to be there on the field and, yeah, that was classy for Mike to do that. But for his dad to reciprocate the gesture and reach out to us? It's just really touching. It's something you don't see in a cutthroat business."

On some level, Tolbert gesture checking on an injured opponent was a simple one. So why was Reid Sr. so moved when he saw Tolbert with his son?

Because Tolbert stopped. He knelt. He cared.

have to have compassion when you play the game, Reid Sr. said. "And I www.authenticusahockey.com/WOMENS-OLYMPIC-JOHN-CARLSON-JERSEY.html seen some that just don They just go on. People don realize these are human beings. They havefamilies."

a 'check with me' defense in first half

Justin Tuck says Giants were a 'check with me' defense in first Milan Lucic Authentic Jersey half

The process Authentic Marc Savard Youth Jersey to simplify the Giants defense began at halftime of the Bears game when a group of Giants defensive players approached coordinator Perry Fewell.

"We all saw something that wasn't working, so we tried to come up with little, subtle ways to make it better," Justin Cheap Milan Lucic Jersey Tuck said.

The team wasn't playing fast enough. The defense was too layered and complex. And, the Giants were facing better quarterbacks than Josh Freeman and Matt Barkley. But since the meeting, the team has not surrendered a defensive touchdown; a stretch that now runs 10 quarters.

The key? Marc Savard Womens Jersey Eliminating so many calls.

"I think, you know, Perry is pretty good at scheming, he really is," Justin Tuck said. "But sometimes you can have so much and it slows you down because, mentally, you're thinking about all the checks you have."

He added: "I thought we were more of a 'check with me defense' in the first half, and that didn't really allow us to play fast. So, I give (Perry) a lot of credit saying 'we need to simplify this.' We agreed. And he's put together three pretty good game plans back to back where we've played pretty awesome and hopefully we can continue to do so."

With so many moving parts, eliminating the calls makes sense. Ryan Mundy will not understand a call like Antrel Rolle. Jon Beason will not get one like Mark Herzlich.

"We took it upon ourselves to internalize it, to play faster and to not think as much while we're out there," Spencer Paysinger said. "The game plan is pretty much the same, but we're meeting more, we're talking more, we're communicating more. It's been good the past few weeks."

It's Scott Tolzien or bust against Vikings

It's Scott Tolzien or bust against Vikings

Touchdowns or interceptions, his expression doesn't change.

When Jon Beason fooled him, the Green Bay Packer quarterback trotted back to the sideline with a few glances up at the video board. When Jason Pierre Paul robbed him in the fourth quarter, he didn't flail in frustration. He hardly blinked. Instead, quarterback and coach spoke immediately on the sideline.

And now, with the 2013 Packers in peril, Tolzien remains the starter. Mike McCarthy made that clear less than 24 hours after Green Bay's 27 13 loss to the New York Giants, and then he took it a http://www.officialnhlhockey.com/CAM_NEELY_JERSEY_AUTHENTIC-c-1_13_28.html step further. The coach, who, you know, has worked with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, said he's never seen a quarterback "hit all his big throws like that in a game."

On the brink, season slipping away at 100 mph, the Packers are sticking with Tolzien. More specifically, they're sticking with Tolzien's cool, focused personality navigating them to a win in an absolute must win Sunday.

Coaches. Family members. Current and former teammates from Madison to Green Bay echo each other.

Tolzien is the same person. Always. "Up 20 or down 20," one Badgers receiver repeated, the guy won't flinch. He overcomes these obstacles, they say. Now, fresh off three interceptions "put that on me," he said Tolzien has to rebound.

Moments after the loss, Tolzien didn't acknowledge the positives, let alone try to spin Bruins Cam Neely Jersey them. In three years covering the team here, I haven't seen a player accept responsibility for a loss with such raw sincerity.

The sting from this loss practically emanated from his pores.

"It's my job, first and foremost, to take care of the football," Tolzien said at the podium. "Guys work their tails off. That's Football 101. From the time you play youth ball to high school, college, pro, every level, officialnhlhockey.com/DAVID_KREJCI_JERSEY_AUTHENTIC-c-1_13_18.html that's the starting point for every quarterback. You have to take care of the ball. I did not do that today. And you have to learn from that."

No one in their right mind could have imagined that the team's playoff hopes would hinge on Tolzien. He is officially the team's fifth backup quarterback in four months. One reason he's here, one reason the Packers are sticking with him is the thick skin.

Former Wisconsin receiver David Gilreath assured Tolzien is "real goofy, nerdy," but never rattled on the field.

"He's one of those guys," Gilreath said, "that even if he's second , third , fourth string or whatever, he's going to prepare like the starter. That's just how he is."

Gilreath remembers tossing the ball around with Tolzien in the off season. Tolzien snapped it to himself. He'd stop mid dropback. He was obsessed with the details.

Former pro Rob Johnson, who has worked with Mark Sanchez, Carson Palmer, Matt Schaub and many others, called Tolzien one of the most diligent workers he's ever had. And, Johnson assures, the guy belongs in the NFL.

"I'd listen to guys on TV questioning his arm strength, and I'm working with the guy every day," Johnson said. "I spent 10 years in the NFL and he can make every throw and go hard on every throw. He was very consistent. Came to work every day."

On Sunday, he made the throws Graham Harrell couldn't in the preseason and Vince Young couldn't in a walk through period. He does belong. Through the Packers' telegraphed run to pass game plan, Tolzien connected with Jarrett Boykin (52 yards) and James Jones (45 yards) off play action.

He stood in the teeth of a blitz to hit Jordy Nelson for 29 yards. Bruins David Krejci Jersey

Talent isn't an issue. Balancing when to take a chance and when to be cautious may be.

Tolzien didn't see Beason. And afterward, Tolzien admitted you should never throw that pass if you don't see the linebacker. That pick six? McCarthy indicated the offense didn't make the right adjustment pre snap. Pierre Paul was virtually the 12th man in Green Bay's huddle. He told reporters afterward he knew the play was coming.

We have also reached out to the NFL and asked them to conduct an objective and thorough review. As an organization, we are committed to a culture of team first accountability and respect for one another."Martin, the second year offensive tackle from Stanford, left the team last week and has not returned. FOXSports first reported teammates pulled a prank in the cafeteria on Martin, who smashed his tray and took off.NFL Network reported Sunday night that one of Martin's linemates, guard Richie Incognito, had been suspended indefinitely while the league investigates the situation.ESPN reported Friday the NFL Players Association was investigating Incognito's role in alleged harassment of Martin dating to his rookie season in 2012."We have an obligation to protect and support all of our members," the statement said. "We take official investigations very seriously and in this case, we have not launched an investigation into Richie Incognito or other players in Miami."Incognito took to Twitter to defend himself Sunday morning. As an organization, we take any accusations of player misconduct seriously," a statement released by the Dolphins early Sunday morning stated. At the time, the Dolphins claimed to be unaware of any hazing of Martin or pranks directed at him."The notion of bullying is based on speculation and has not been presented to cheap nfl jerseys us as a concern from Jonathan or anyone else internally. The reports that the NFLPA is investigating our players are inaccurate."BELL: Martin situation brings bullying to forefrontIn a statement released Saturday by the union, the NFLPA stressed its concern about players being provided a "safe and professional workplace."
