The plane maker's stock was one of the standouts as the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for an eighth straight day, its longest streak of gains since January.

Boeing gained $3.79, or 3.7 percent, to $105.66 after it was found that batteries were not the cause of a fire on one of its 787 aircraft at London's Heathrow airport Friday. Earlier this year, smoldering batteries on two 787s caused the plane to be grounded for more than three months.

The gains continued a hot streak for the market this month. Stocks rose to record levels last week after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank would not ease its stimulus before the economy was ready. The central banker's comments also stemmed a rise in Treasury yields.

"The general bias to the market is up," said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds. "You can see a clear path to economic growth in the United States."

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 19.96 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 15,484.26.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.31 points, also 0.1 percent, to 1,682.50. The S&P is up 4.8 percent so far in July, putting it on track to surpass the 5 percent gain it had in January. Both the Dow and S&P are at all-time highs.

The Nasdaq composite rose 7.41 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,607.49.

Small-company stocks had the biggest gains Monday. That's a sign investors are becoming confident in taking on more risk in exchange for the possibility of greater returns. The Russell 2000 rose 6.78 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,043.30, bringing its gains for the year to 22.8 percent. That's far ahead of the S&P's year-to-date gain of 18 percent.

Investors will be listening to comments from Bernanke again this week for more clues about the central bank's outlook for the economy. The Fed chairman will give his semi-annual testimony to Congress on Wednesday. The central bank is currently buying $85 billion of bonds a month to keep interest rates low and to encourage borrowing and hiring.

The pace of companies reporting earnings will also increase this week.

"We expect modest earnings gains and we expect that management teams will guide for a cautiously optimistic view in the second half," said Jim Russell, a regional investment director at US Bank.

Earnings for the second quarter will rise by an average 3.2 percent for S&P 500 companies from a year ago, according to data from S&P Capital IQ. Earnings at financial companies are expected to rise by 18.8 percent, the most of any industry group.

Citigroup gained Monday, leading other bank stocks higher, after reporting earnings that beat analysts' expectations for the second quarter as investment banking profits surged. The bank's stock rose $1, or 2 percent, to $51.81.

A closely watched report on U.S. retail sales Monday morning had some disappointments for investors. Americans spent more at retail businesses in June, buying more cars and trucks, furniture and clothes, but they cut back on many other purchases, a mixed sign for economic growth. Retail sales rose just 0.4 percent from May, less than analysts had forecast and less than the 0.5 percent increase the previous month.

The market's advance was held back by news that economic growth in China, the second-biggest economy in the world, fell to the lowest since 1991, hurt by weak trade and efforts to cool a credit boom. China's economy expanded at an annual rate of 7.5 percent in the second quarter, down from 7.7 percent in the same period a year earlier.

Slowing global growth is one of the biggest threats to this year's stock rally, said Uri Landesman, President of Platinum Partners. He predicts that stocks may be poised to slump as much as 15 percent in the coming months. Landesman said this year's market advance overstates the outlook for the economy.

"Most of the world's economies are sucking wind," Landesman said. "It's going to be very difficult to keep (the U.S. economy) going with weak exports."

In commodities trading, the price of crude oil rose 37 cents to $106.32 a barrel. Gold rose $5.90, or 0.5 percent, to $1,283.50 an ounce. The dollar rose against the euro and the Japanese yen.

In government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.55 percent from 2.58 percent Friday. The yield is used as a benchmark for many kinds of loans including home mortgages.

Among other stocks making big moves, Leap Wireless soared $8.97, or 112 percent, to $16.95 after the carrier agreed to be acquired by AT&T for $1.19 billion, or $15 a share. The deal was announced late Friday. AT&T fell 26 cents, or 0.7 percent, $35.55.

Abdul will guest-judge the series on Tuesday night, Fox said on Monday. Abdul will help critique the Top 18 finalists, a group that includes Jasmine Mason, Alan Bersten and Mariah Spears.(The latter, by the way, is not a human mash-up of former "American Idol" judge Mariah Carey and former "The X Factor" judge Britney Spears.)

LONDON (Reuters) - Andy Murray is getting a taste for grand slam titles and believes crushing Novak Djokovic to end Britain's interminable wait for a men's champion at Wimbledon will be a springboard to take his career to the next level.

The 26-year-old became a national hero on Sunday when a 6-4 7-5 6-4 victory on a baking Center Court meant the nation could finally stop talking about Fred Perry who won his third Wimbledon title in 1936.

Murray's stunning performance was hailed by everyone from politicians, movie stars and fellow sportsmen, as well as the millions who watched his landmark victory, but the Scot will not be milking the plaudits for long.

After attending the Wimbledon ball on Sunday he was planning to celebrate with his sizeable entourage, including coach Ivan Lendl on Monday, then, after a week of rest and relaxation it will be back to the grind.

"I know what it feels like to lose in finals, in a Wimbledon final, but now I know what it feels like to win and that's certainly a lot better and it's worth putting in the hard work for," Murray told Reuters on Monday at the All England Club.

"I didn't know last year that it was worth it because I had never won a grand slam before until the U.S. Open last year.

"After that you realize the hours you put in training, preparing and working on the practice court, it's all worth it.

"So I hope this is a springboard for me and I will use it for my advantage."

Murray, who now holds two of the grand slams and Olympic gold, was already a member of the exclusive All England Club but when he walked in on Monday after "a few hours sleep" he did so with Wimbledon champion as a new title.

It is quite an upgrade and the realization of what he achieved the on a momentous Sunday for British sport was slowly sinking in, but only after watching a few TV replays.

"The last game was something that stands out but I had to watch it a few times to remember what actually happened because when I came off the court I had no recollection of that game," a relaxed Murray said.

"I had no recollection of the last few points in it at all. It was just a crazy way to finish the game and I didn't think it would have happened for me any other way.

"For everyone watching it needed to be like that to make it more special."

Murray had the whole country on edge as Djokovic saved three championship points in a row before Murray kept his nerve to engineer a fourth which he converted to spark wild celebrations.

His reaction to victory was a dazed walkabout on Center Court before climbing into the stands to hug his support group, girlfriend and mother Judy.

Last year's Olympic gold was memorable but Murray said winning Wimbledon was the pinnacle.

"I think it's number one, it's different from the Olympics," he said. "I think winning Olympic gold within sport is a huge thing but winning Wimbledon within tennis is the pinnacle and I don't think I will ever top that."

Murray beat Djokovic in the Olympic semi-finals and said that result had fuelled his belief that he could be the Serbian world number one again on the biggest day of his career.

"I spoke with Ivan the night before and we spoke about tactics and I watched my match against Novak in the Olympics semi-final from last year," Murray, whose decision to hire Lendl as coach 18 months ago has proved an inspired one.

HEAD BOY

From a player with all the shots to win majors, Lendl has tweaked Murray's mind to that of a champion too.

"We spoke again on the morning of the match and he basically said go out and work for every single point, that's your court, your fans are going to be behind you, just bring the title home, and I managed to do it."

With Murray and Djokovic both aged 26 and at the peak of their powers their rivalry looks set to dominate men's tennis, especially with Roger Federer showing signs of a slow decline and doubts over the durability of Rafa Nadal's knees.

Others like Juan Martin del Potro and Tomas Berdych are also threats but Murray is predicting plenty of exhausting battles ahead with old junior sparring partner Djokovic.

"I've known him since I was 12 and when we finish playing I'm sure we'll get on really well with each other but right now it's hard to be best of friends because these matches are so tough physically and mentally," Murray said.

"The matches we play are brutal and so physically challenging. It's nice we've know each other since we were kids and our parents have seen us kind of grow up together but it's hard playing against him."

Djokovic remains the world number one, for now, despite only having the Australian Open currently under his belt.

"It's tough," Murray said when asked if knocking Djokovic off his perch was a priority.

"Right now I hold two slams, the Olympic gold and the final of another slam and I'm still nowhere near number one in the world. The goal for me is to try and win the grand slams, win those tournaments and not worry too much about the ranking."

The new Charon photo was taken by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, which is closing in on Pluto and due to fly by the icy world in July 2015. The black-and-white image shows Charon as a dim object that is near, but clearly separate from, the brighter object that is Pluto.

NASA unveiled the new Charon photo Wednesday (July 10), hailing the image as a "major milestone" for New Horizon's 9 1/2-year trek to Pluto. []

"The image itself might not look very impressive to the untrained eye, but compared to the discovery images of Charon from Earth, these 'discovery' images fromlook great!" said New Horizons project scientist Hal Weaver of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Md. "Were very excited to see Pluto and Charon as separate objects for the first time from New Horizons."

: Charon, Nix, Hydra, Styx and Kerberos. Charon is the largest of the five and orbits Pluto at a distance of about 12,000 miles (19,000 kilometers). It is about 750 miles (1,207 km) wide and was discovered in 1978 by astronomers using the Kaj Strand Astrometric Reflector at the U.S. Naval Observatorys Flagstaff Station noticed a visible "bump" moving around Pluto, New Horizons mission scientists explained.

The four other moons of Pluto were discovered in images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The , which were formally called P4 and P5, were unveiled last week.

New Horizons scientists used their spacecraft's LOng Range Reconnaissance Imager, called LORRI, to take the new Charon photos. The camera took six different photos of Charon and Pluto, which scientists used to create a single composite view of the dwarf planet and its biggest moon.

"In addition to being a nice technical achievement, these new LORRI images of Charon and Pluto should provide some interesting science too," New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado said in a statement.

Because of the unique angle of the New Horizons photos, they may hold new clues into the surface properties of Charon and Pluto, including the potential for a layer of fine particles blanketing their surfaces, New Horizons officials explained.

NASA launched the $700 million New Horizons mission in January 2006. Currently, New Horizons is about 550 million miles (880 million km) from . But it will be much closer on July 14, 2015, when it makes its closest approach to Pluto and its moons. On that day, the spacecraft zoom within 7,750 miles (12,500 km) of Pluto and should provide spectacular views of the dwarf planet and its moons.

"We're excited to have our first pixel on Charon," Stern said, "but two years from now, near closest approach, we'll have almost a million pixels on Charon and I expect we'll be about a million times happier too!"

The U.S. International Trade Commission, which hears a long list of high-tech patent complaints, said in May 2012 that Google's Motorola Mobility infringed a Microsoft patent for generating and synchronizing calendar items. It barred any infringing Motorola Mobility device from being imported into the United States.

All phones with Google's Android software are affected by the ban, Microsoft said. But Google said that it should have applied to only some Motorola Mobility Android phones.

That order was to have gone into effect 60 days after it was issued but, according to Microsoft's court filing, it still has not been enforced.

"CBP (Customs and Bureau Protection) has repeatedly allowed Motorola to evade that order based on secret presentations that CBP has refused to share with Microsoft," the complaint said.

Google argued that Microsoft tried to broaden the order beyond what the ITC had intended.

"U.S. Customs appropriately rejected Microsoft's effort to broaden its patent claims to block Americans from using a wide range of legitimate calendar functions, like scheduling meetings, on their mobile phones," said Matt Kallman, a Google spokesman.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Customs declined comment.

The filing is the latest salvo in an international smartphone patent war that has embroiled a half dozen companies in lawsuits filed in about a dozen countries.

The dispute is a sign that deciding which product infringes a patent is harder now that the world has gone high tech, and that Customs may not have the needed expertise to make that determination and perhaps should rely on the ITC, said Deanna Tanner Okun, a former ITC chairman who is a partner at Adduci, Mastriani & Schaumberg, LLP.

"Problems have increased. The system is outdated," she said. "They're using practices and procedures that are 20 years old."

MVEZO, South Africa (Reuters) - Workers armed with pick-axes and a court order broke into the compound of Nelson Mandela's grandson on Wednesday to exhume the remains of three of the anti-apartheid hero's children, a new twist in a row that has split South Africa's most famous family.

Within hours of a ruling against Mandla Mandela by the high court in Mthatha, 700 km (450 miles) south of Johannesburg, police and hearses arrived at Mandla's complex in the nearby village of Mvezo, where the three Mandela offspring are buried.

The bodies were initially laid to rest in the family cemetery in Qunu, the village where the 94-year-old Mandela - now criticially ill in hospital - spent most of his childhood.

But they were moved two years ago by Mandla to Mvezo, where he serves as the official head of the clan.

The spat over the site of the Mandela family graves has transfixed and appalled South Africa's 53 million people as they contemplate the reality that the father of the post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation" will not be with them forever.

Mandla has not made clear why he moved the remains the 20 km (12 miles) to Mvezo, where Mandela was born, but many South Africans believe it is part of a campaign to ensure the country's first black president is buried there.

Mandla has already built a visitor centre at Mvezo and a memorial to his grandfather, a Nobel Peace laureate and one of the 20th century's most admired political figures.

Last week, a rival faction of the family led by Mandela's oldest daughter, Makaziwe, sought a court order compelling the bodies to be returned to Qunu.

Local media reports have suggested the initial movement of the bodies by Mandla may have been carried out without the required cultural customs being observed, and police have opened an investigation to determine whether this was done illegally.

Mandla, a 39-year-old Member of Parliament for the ruling African National Congress (ANC), was not present when a posse of police, workmen and undertakers entered the Mvezo complex to carry out the court order.

However, a statement released by his office said he would not stand in their way.

"Nkosi Zwelivelile has on numerous occasions indicated that he is not against the repatriation of the remains in question," the statement said, calling Mandla by his official clan title.

It also condemned "a lot of allegations and dirt thrown in his direction".

Makaziwe was present at Mvezo but did not talk to reporters, who were pushed back by police. After the court decision, her only words to reporters were: "This is a private family matter."

The three Mandela children buried in Mvezo are an infant girl who died in 1948, a boy, Thembi, who died in a car crash in 1969, and Makgatho, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 2005. In all, Mandela fathered six children from his three marriages.

LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (Reuters) - A week after the heart of the Quebec village of Lac-Megantic was devastated in a fireball in one of the worst train accidents in Canadian history, the St. Agnes church bell rang 50 times on Saturday, once for each person believed to have died.

Eight seconds intervened between each bell, then a minute of silence, after which 12 white doves were released from the steps of the 92-year-old church in an emotional midday ceremony.

A group of mourners held hands to form a long human chain, couples embraced and many cried quietly, all heads down.

"It's complete desolation for all. Church is where we come to find peace. There are no words to describe this region's suffering," said Genevieve, a woman from nearby St-Romain who knew three of the dead and did not want to give her full name.

The runaway train of 72 cars carrying crude oil had been parked uphill in the nearby town of Nantes. It started moving toward Lac-Megantic when its brakes failed, building speed and eventually jumping the tracks in the heart of town near the packed Musi-Cafe bar, shortly after 1 a.m. (0500 GMT) last Saturday.

The accident is likely to spur changes in Canadian railway regulations. It has already launched a debate about the merits of sending crude by rail, which is increasingly being used because of capacity limits on pipelines and political opposition to them despite their better safety record.

Police said on Saturday that 33 bodies had now been recovered, up from 28 - although they have only been able to identify nine of them so far. They are searching for the bodies of the estimated 17 missing.

The St. Agnes church has been opened up to let people leave mementoes, photos and flowers.

People were given heart-shaped pieces of paper on which to leave a message at the shrine at the altar of the church in Lac-Megantic. One read: "You are strong and united. You will find it in you to forgive."

Real Lemoine, 70, a retired electrician whose wife lost her niece, remarked: "We are all Catholics here. We need to pay our respects."

MAYOR SEEKS ELECTION DELAY

On Friday night, Dominique Bordeleau, a high school teacher attending a candlelight vigil, said she recognized two of her former students among the photos placed at the shrine.

"It really sinks in what happened when you see these pictures. It reaches deep into you. It's devastating," she said.

Candlelight vigils were also held on Friday night in Montreal and other cities and villages across the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec.

Lac-Megantic Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche said she would ask the Quebec government to postpone for two years the municipal elections scheduled for November, so that the council could sit during what would have been the campaign and devote its attention to reconstruction.

As the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the Quebec provincial police try to piece together what caused the accident, they have focused on whether enough hand brakes had been set. The train's air brakes had failed when a locomotive was shut down after a small fire broke out in its engines, but the hand brakes should have held the train in place.

Much of the town's anger has been directed at the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway, or MMA, and its chairman, Edward Burkhardt, who has apologized and acknowledged corporate liability.

Burkhardt said the engineer who parked the train, Tom Harding, had told the company he had set hand brakes on 11 tank cars. But Burkhardt said MMA's general feeling was that it was not true.

Harding has remained out of sight and Reuters could not reach him for comment. Some residents said he was just the scapegoat, and they blamed MMA for the catastrophe.

Provincial police said the current heat wave was complicating search efforts. The workers are using respirators despite the heat.

On Friday, police spoke of using ventilation in the search area for quicker dispersal of dangerous fumes emanating from the oil. But that idea was quickly dropped because the movement of air was deemed a fire hazard.

"The conditions are absolutely awful," police inspector Michel Forget told reporters.

The list of players Toronto FC had to worry about entering Saturday night's match against Sporting Kansas City was long.

Third-year striker Soony Saad wasn't at the top of the list, but he made the difference in Sporting KC's 3-0 victory, which was played in front 21,126 fans the largest crowd in Sporting Park history.

"To be fair to the guys, all season we've been really competitive in every single game," said Toronto FC coach Ryan Nelsen. "Our past performances haven't produced the points we probably really deserve, but tonight was probably the first time we got turned over."

Saad, who entered the match with one goal in 22 career MLS matches, tallied in the 21st and 50th minutes. He also set in motion Sporting KC's third goal during the most lopsided loss of the season for TFC (2-9-7).

"We were second best today," defender Steven Caldwell said. "We take our defeat like men and we accept it. It was a poor performance. Nothing really went right for us, but we're in a building process. We move forward now to a huge game on Wednesday (at Chivas USA)."

Both teams dodged narrowly avoided going down a goal in the first 20 minutes.

Sporting KC (9-5-6) almost grabbed a lead in the 14th minute when Bieler's shot from the top of Toronto's penalty box forced goalkeeper Joe Bendik to make a diving save to his right.

Four minutes later, Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen stonewalled Jeremy Brockie then scrambled back to his feet and knocked down another Brockie rocket off the rebound.

It was only a matter of time.

Saad broke the ice in the 21st minute when Toronto's defence failed to pressure him at the top of the penalty box on the left side.

A sliver of daylight opened and Saad tucked a laser-like shot inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.

"We made mistakes we haven't really been making all year," Nelsen said. "That's down to obviously a good team we're playing against. But we've played teams that are just as good and haven't made those mistakes."

Bendik made a brilliant kick save against Benny Feilhaber in the 32nd minute, which helped keep the Reds within striking distance at halftime.

During the 49th minute, Bendik denied Bieler's one-on-one opportunity with another superb kick save, but the dam was about to break.

Saad hammered home a rebound one minute later to make it 2-0.

Zusi, an MLS MVP finalist last season, drew Bendik off his line and blasted a rocket from just inside that box that Toronto's goalkeeper had to push wide.

Unfortunately for Bendik, the rebound went straight to Saad for an easy put away.

Things went from bad to worse for Toronto, which lost Danny Califf to retirement Friday and Darren O'Dea to a surprise transfer earlier Saturday, in the 56th minute when frustration seemed to boil over.

"The second goal was the killer," Nelson said. "I always thought, even at 1-0, we would get our chances if we had 11 men. That second goal kind of hurt and then, obviously, the sending off was the nail in the coffin. It was probably damage limitation from then on."

Midfielder Reggie Lambe was ejected for a reckless tackle from behind against Saad effectively ended the Reds' comeback hopes having to play the remainder of the match a man down.

Sporting KC tacked on its final goal in the 63rd minute. Saad played a ball into the box for Kamara, whose one-time pass went to Feilhaber.

Feilhaber unselfishly sent the ball along with the outside of his right foot to Bieler, who tallied his team-high ninth goal of the season with a blast into an empty net.
