Basic Grammar in Use (Raymond Murphy)

Grammar in Use Intermediate (Raymond Murphy)

Practical English Usage (Michael Swan)

ライティングルールブック

The Elements of Style (William Strunk Jr.)

英英辞典

Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's English Dictionary

Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary

Three Books to Read for Engilish Learners

Today, I would like to recommend three books for English learners in Japan. Those books can be helpful for anyone struggling with English.

１．松本亨　- 英語の新しい学び方

２．伊藤サム　-　英語は「やさしく、たくさん」　中学レベルから始める「英語脳」の育て方

３．國弘 正雄　－　國弘流英語の話しかた

Those are the only books you need for learning English. The first book emphasizes the importance of "Think in English" and writing. This is a common mistake among Japanese people. Do not think in Japanese when you speak English. Instead, try to imagine or visualize the things you are trying to say. The most important, but the most difficult skill to acquire is writing. This is challenge for English learners or even for the people in the professional world. I still struggle everyday (It is probably obvious when you read my blog). The sad thing is the only way to improve your writing skill is to write. So, I want all of you to start writing and struggle. The second book points out that Japanese learners tend to use materials that are beyond their competence. A huge mistake! Mr. Sam tells that learners should begin with children's illustrated books, then work your way up. I totally agree with him. This is the most effective, perhaps the only way for you to start thinking in English. He also mentions the importance of quantity. You must read, listen, speak, and write a lot. Dr. Kunihiro's book is actually the first book I bought for English learning. I was shocked when I read. He read the same textbook 1000 times. This is an important point. You should not sit on your desk and act like you’re solving problems. Learning English should start with sound. Read aloud in English at least 30 minutes a day. You can play an audiobook in your car while driving and imitate the narrators. English accents are very important. I know people out there who say the accents don’t matter. Wrong! I want those people to make a presentation in the front of native speakers and see how things will go. You don’t have to have perfect English accent, but you cannot just ignore them. Here, I want to present a few techniques that I use everyday to improve my English. If time is allowed I go into more detail about each item.

1.Read in English (Do not forget to read aloud).

2.Write in English.

3.Practice your English on DMM.

4. Listen and watch American TV shows.

If you do this for one year, I will guarantee that your English will improve dramatically.

Thank you for reading.!
