Battaglin beat fellow Italians Fabio Felline and Giovanni Visconti for his first stage victory in one of cycling's main tours.

Overall favorite Bradley Wiggins lost 17 seconds after he was caught behind a crash near the finish on the slippery road. He dropped to sixth in the general standings, 34 seconds behind Paolini. Main rival Vincenzo Nibali moved up to fourth, 31 seconds off the pace.

Battaglin, who rides for Bardiani Valvole-CSF Inox, completed the hilly 153-mile route from Policastro Bussentino to Serra San Brunowon in 6 hours, 14 minutes, 19 seconds.

The Italian stayed in the main pack throughout the race while a number of other riders tried unsuccessful breakaways.

The first featured seven riders who built a lead of nearly eight minutes after 34 miles. But the pack, led by Paolini's Katusha team, gradually reeled them in.

Several other riders tried to attack but were unsuccessful, with Sylvain Georges having the best attempt as he stormed up the final climb to Croce Ferrata. But Danilo Di Luca chased him down with less than six miles to go, bringing Robinson Chalapud with him.

Georges ran out of steam and dropped back to the main pack while Di Luca and Chalapud stayed 10 seconds in front heading over the summit. They were caught with less than a half mile remaining to set up the mass sprint to the line.

Wednesday's fifth stage is a mainly flat, 124-mile leg from Cosenza to Matera.

The Rio de Janeiro State Health Department said in a statement that the woman's husband was cleaning his spear gun when it went off, firing a harpoon that hit her cervical spine.

For the quarter ending December 2012, net income attributable to Alibaba Group was $642.2 million while its revenue for the period was $1.84 billion, the filing said.

Capitol Hill aides familiar with the White House changes say the administration has identified almost $5 billion in cuts that can be restored under its reading of the arcane budget rules governing the across-the-board cuts, known as sequestration.

The calculations differ from earlier ones because a partial-year funding bill was replaced in March with a more detailed measure. After administration number crunchers redid their math they were able to restore about $5 billion of the scheduled $85 billion in automatic sequestration cuts under a complicated, previously unused mechanism that dates to a 1985 budget law.

An administration official confirmed the calculations Friday but declined to comment further because the process is ongoing. The official and congressional aides spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the changes publicly.

The move comes amid increasing public pressure to find ways to lessen the impact of sequestration. Federal agencies are warning that the mandatory cuts could mean cutbacks in services. Last week, Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed legislation giving the Federal Aviation Administration the ability to avoid furloughs that were causing flight delays by tapping money in other accounts.

The cuts officially began in March after Congress and Obama could not reach an agreement on a broader budget deal. The automatic cuts had been imposed under a hard-fought 2011 debt and budget pact. They require a 5 percent cut to domestic agency operating budgets and an 8 percent cut to the Pentagon. Social Security was exempted and cuts to Medicare were limited to a 2 percent cut to health care providers. Safety net programs like Medicaid, food stamps and school lunches for the poor were exempted, too.

The cuts have so far failed to live up to the dire warnings issued earlier by agencies, in part because agency budget officers working with Congress have been permitted to transfer money between accounts. That allowed the Justice Department, for instance, to avoid temporary layoffs called furloughs. But budget experts warn that the grip of sequestration will grow tighter as weeks and months pass, leading to teacher layoffs, reduced funding for infrastructure and economic development projects, and a host of other cuts across the budget.

Many liberal activists were infuriated when Congress last week swiftly moved to address problems with air traffic control that led to widespread flight delays while leaving other problems like cuts to preschool for the poor and Meals on Wheels for the elderly unaddressed. Most lawmakers are frequent fliers.

At issue in the latest recalculation are accounts that were cut more deeply under a full-year funding bill enacted in March than they would have been under the across-the-board cuts. They get funds restored. It's up to the White House Office of Management and Budget to calculate the across-the-board cuts.

The recalculation surprised many people on Capitol Hill, but Republicans atop the budget committees declined to criticize the move. Republicans like Sen. John McCain of Arizona have sought to reverse cuts to the Pentagon and it benefits the most from the new math.

The State Department was a big winner and said Friday that it would be able to avoid furloughing workers, in part because of the new calculations.

Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration said Friday that it would not have to curtail inspections of food processing plants. It had earlier warned that 2,100 plant inspections would have been cancelled.

MADRID, April 30 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund held on by their fingernails to clinch a place in the Champions League final on Tuesday with a 4-3 aggregate win despite losing 2-0 after conceding late goals in a nerve-shredding finish at the Bernabeu.

The German side, who will play in their second final after winning the competition in 1997, survived early pressure from a fired-up Real in the last-four second leg clash before wasting several chances to kill off the home team.

Real, chasing the 10th European crown that has eluded them since 2002, looked down and out before substitute Karim Benzema struck in the 83rd minute and Sergio Ramos smashed in a second goal five minutes later to given Jose Mourinho's side hope.

With the raucous crowd on its feet and willing their team on, the Real players desperately sought the goal that would have taken them through but Dortmund held out to set up a clash with Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich or Barcelona.

Bayern have a 4-0 advantage over the La Liga leaders after their stunning victory in Munich last week.

Dortmund's success put them into their first European final since the 2001/02 season, when they lost the UEFA Cup showpiece to Feyenoord, while Real are the only team to be eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals for three years in a row.

"It was tight at the end," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said in a television interview.

"We had our huge chances before that. Had we scored then it would have been over. Overall we played too little football but we won 4-3 over two games and deserve to be in the final."

Real's reverse is also a huge setback for their charismatic coach Mourinho, who was trying to become the first man to win the Champions League with three different clubs after triumphs with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.

It is the fifth time the Portuguese has been knocked out in the last four of Europe's elite club competition in seven semi-final attempts.

In typically outspoken fashion, Mourinho complained that Dortmund defender Mats Hummels should have been sent off for handball in the second half but praised his players for "giving their all".

"We had opportunities to score much earlier and then we obviously would have had a better chance," Mourinho, who has refused to commit to staying at Real beyond the end of this season, told Spanish TV.

"Near the end we almost got there but almost does not exist. Either you make it or you don't and we didn't make it," he added.

"We have had three strong seasons with almost, almost, almost. I hope that in the future, and obviously that it happens soon, we can leave the almost behind and get to the final."

FIRED UP

With Spanish King Juan Carlos watching from the VIP tribune and chants of "Yes we can!" echoing around Real's giant arena, the home supporters unveiled an enormous mosaic depicting the Champions League trophy before kickoff.

The electric atmosphere appeared to energise the players and Real took the game to Dortmund early on, Gonzalo Higuain drawing a smart save from Roman Weidenfeller in the fourth minute.

Dortmund looked nervous but were also managing to get forward and Robert Lewandowski, who scored all four of their goals in last week's 4-1 first-leg victory, volleyed straight at goalkeeper Diego Lopez in the 13th minute.

Real's Cristiano Ronaldo had an almost identical chance moments later which Weidenfeller again did well to keep out.

After Dortmund playmaker Mario Goetze was forced off injured in the 14th minute, his Germany team mate Mesut Ozil had a golden chance to open Real's account when he was clean through on goal but his low strike flew narrowly wide of the post.

With Dortmund pressuring the Real players and denying them time on the ball, the home support began to get restless as the chances for the hosts started to dry up.

By halftime the Dortmund fans were starting to make themselves heard and the "Yes we cans!" from the frustrated local fans seemed increasingly half-hearted.

As the second half began, Mourinho cut a worried-looking figure and striker Benzema immediately began to warm up.

Dortmund had two chances early in the second period and both fell to Lewandowski. The Poland forward struck a wild shot over the bar in the 49th and then raced clear onto a Marco Reus pass a minute later but smashed his effort against the crossbar.

REALLY TENSE

Mourinho made a double substitution in the 57th minute when Benzema and Kaka replaced Higuain and Fabio Coentrao but it was Dortmund who looked more threatening by that stage.

Lopez somehow managed to scramble across to deny Dortmund's Ilkay Guendogan who had the goal at his mercy and Lewandowski's shot was blocked by Michael Essien in the 76th.

Ozil crossed for Benzema to give Real a sliver of hope seven minutes from time and Ramos struck through a crowd of players to set up a frantic ending but it was all too late.

"They really put pressure on us and we let in two goals towards the end and then it really became tense," Dortmund substitute Kevin Grosskreutz, who replaced Goetze, told Sky Television.

"But we have a great squad, super fans such a great club we just deserved to go through."

Ramos told Spanish broadcaster TVE: "It's a shame. You can lose and football is like that but when you lose it should be with this version of Real Madrid.

"If we had come out playing like we did tonight in Dortmund things would be very different.

Repentir, a free app developed by researchers in the United Kingdom's Newcastle University and Northumbria University, works so far with only one painting. But the developers say that the technology could soon be applied to many new paintings, and maybe even old ones.

"What you could do is take the actual imagery art historians have beenand actually use the app as a way to reveal them," said Jonathan Hook, a professor at Newcastle University who studies human-computer interactions. At present, the app can reveal the history of "Transamerica," a new painting by artist Nathan Walsh. []

Both the app and the painting are being formally revealed in Paris today (April 26) at the 2013 Association for Computing Machinery Conference on Human Factors in Computing. Walsh is a realist painter, which often makes art viewers believe he's "cheated" by altering photographs or otherwise not really creating his work by hand, Hook told LiveScience.

"What's really cool about the app is it allows people not just to believe that what Nathan does is real, but to get a handle on the process," Hook said.

"Transamerica" is a street scene as seen reflected in a San Francisco Chinatown gift shop. As he painted, Walsh took a photograph every day of the unfinished canvas, starting from pencil sketches and ending in . Hook and his colleagues then compiled these photographs into layers. Repentir app users can scroll through the layers using a scroll bar, or they can rub top layers away on-screen with a fingertip, revealing the earlier work underneath.

Viewers can snap a picture of the artwork from any angle as they view it in person, and the program will recognize the picture and adjust the layers accordingly. This means that you can even get up close and photograph just a tiny portion of the picture and the app will still recognize it, Hook said.

"Rather than some alternative approaches like looking for a square shape or a QR code, this actually uses features within the image to match where the painting is," he said.

Repentir currently needs "Transamerica" to work, but any artist with digital photography equipment could join the project, Hook said. "Transamerica" will remain on display in Paris until May 2 and then is set to go to the Bernarducci Meisel Gallery in New York, where Hook and his colleagues plan to study whetherchanges the way art lovers approach the painting.

"The next step is to actually evaluate whether Repentir affects the way that gallery patrons experience Nathan's work," Hook said.

The message from Boston transit authorities shared early in the morning via Twitter was clear: "Go/stay home."

As the manhunt stretched into the afternoon, Amtrak stopped all trains on the heavily traveled corridor between New York and Boston. Its service from Boston to Maine was also halted. All major intercity bus lines suspended service to the area. Authorities also stopped service on commuter trains into Boston as well as the city's subway called the T and the city's buses.

After an intensive search yielded no suspect, authorities lifted the stay-indoors warning Friday evening and the transit system started running again. The suspect was later discovered hiding in a boat parked in the backyard of a home in suburban Watertown, Mass.

Amtrak announced it would resume limited service Friday night and regular service would be available Saturday.

Greyhound spokesman Timothy Stokes said that the company's bus service won't resume in Boston until early Saturday morning. The first express bus service into Boston will leave New York City at 2 a.m. Saturday, he said.

Only air travel functioned normally throughout Friday. Planes took off and landed mostly on schedule at Logan International, although passengers entering the airport drew extra scrutiny from state police.

All major highways in the region remained open except in Watertown, the center of the manhunt. But they and most city streets remained eerily empty as people heeded the government's advice and stayed home.

"I'm just like everybody else in greater Boston, just staying at home, glued to the television," said Bob Trane, an elected alderman in Somerville, Mass., a densely populated city minutes from downtown Boston. "There is nobody out in the streets, very few cars, very few people walking."

Elsewhere, travelers scrambled to find a way home.

Stranded by the Amtrak shutdown, the Rev. Victoria Weinstein passed the time with a beer in a New York bar. She weighed her options for getting home to a Boston suburb.

"I have my Plan A, B, C, and D," she said. There were rides with friends, family or waiting a day. She even considering hitching a ride with a stranger from New England she met at the bar.

"I really just want to be home with my community," said Weinstein, a Unitarian Universalist pastor. "I'm just thinking about all the people whose hearts are broken."

MegaBus, which canceled 35 trips to and from Boston Friday affecting about 2,500 passengers said it will also cancel its 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. trips out of Boston Saturday.

Travelers whose trains or buses were canceled are getting full refunds. All airlines allowed passengers scheduled for Friday to change flights to other days, although policies varied widely. Grace periods ranged from a few days on airlines like American and Delta, while United Airlines is giving passengers up to a year from the date they purchased their tickets to fly.

Passengers trying to leave Boston by air were met by Massachusetts State Police searching vehicles at entrances to Logan. The airport handles about 1,000 flights a day and has been operating at a heightened level of security since Monday's attack, according to Matthew Brelis, director of media relations for MassPort, the public agency that runs Logan.

Government officials refused to say why flying was the only form of mass transit allowed.

But airports are a very different environment than bus or train stations. Every person and piece of luggage moving through an airport goes through a security screening. Each passenger's name, date of birth and gender is compared to those on terrorism watch lists. And before boarding a plane out of town, each person must pass through a checkpoint where police have ample time to compare them to photos of suspects.

Friday's manhunt capped off a tiring and emotional week for Boston residents.

"This thing just doesn't stop. It's been constant for the past week," said Ian Deason, director of Boston operations for JetBlue, the largest airline in the city with about 120 daily flights.

He noted that pilots and flight attendants resting in a crew lounge prior to their flights were "glued to the TV."

While Friday's mass transit shut down was unusual it wasn't the first closure.

Boston cut off the T for two days in February. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority shut down all bus and train service ahead of Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy. New York also shut down its public transportation system in advance of the storms.

New York's subways shut down after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but limited parts were quickly restored. The first subway car ran just 2 hours and 28 minutes after service was halted, although parts of the system took days to resume.

London's July 7 bombings in which four suicide bombers detonated themselves aboard three trains and a double-decker bus in 2005 temporarily crippled the European capital's transit system. The next day, the majority of the system reopened.

In Los Angeles, buses, freeways and the airport were shut down following the 1992 riots. Bus service resumed three days later when schools reopened and a dawn-to-dusk curfew was lifted.

Even when Boston's public transportation system starts up again, some Bostonians are likely to change their behavior.

Maria D'Amico, 23, started this week to only sit in the front or back of the subway.

"If anything happened on the train, it would probably happen in the middle," she said.

Back at the airport, passengers had to adapt with no mass transit linking them to the city center. Private cars, taxis and the Logan Express a bus service to suburban park-and-ride facilities were still able to enter the airport.

The biggest hassle for travelers was waiting for a taxi. Brelis described the lines as "exceedingly long" during the late morning. Officials were asking people to share cabs to nearby location. The backlog cleared by afternoon.

James Kearney, an information technology consultant from East Amwell, N.J. was in town for business and managed to make it home on a United flight at 10 a.m. He said via email that the 15-mile trip from the Marriott in the western suburb of Newton, Mass. to Logan on the Massachusetts Turnpike "was extremely quiet during rush hour."

Once at the airport, he said, the situation was "pretty standard."

"Even security was fast and uneventful," Kearney wrote.

Kacey Brister, a senior at Louisiana State University, was supposed to have an interview for a public relations job in Boston at 3 p.m. Friday. She was flying on Southwest Airlines from New Orleans to Boston via St. Louis.

Before boarding the last leg of her trip, Brister said that everyone was fairly calm at the gate.

"The biggest concern for most people was how they were going to get from Logan to their hotel, home," she wrote in an email, adding that there was "a sense of camaraderie between passengers."

Not everyone was so calm, however. "My mother has begged me" to turn around, she said.
