Now, it was Arthur's custom never to sit 
down for dinner until he had witnessed some kind 
of adventure.

Sir Gawaine, one of the knights, was looking idly 
out of the window when he saw the three men 
approaching. He went to the King and said, 
"Sire, you may go to dinner now, for here comes 
your adventure."

This was a clever remark by Gawaine, because at 
the time, there was nothing particularly 
unusual about it; strangers were constantly 
arriving at the Court for one reason or another.

The great Round Table was filled with a 
magnificent company of brave and handsome 
knights, with the King sitting in the center.

The three men entered the hall. Gareth was in 
the middle, and although he was tall and 
well-built, he leaned on the shoulders of the 
others as if he were weak or ill. The crowd 
stepped aside for them, staring curiously, as they 
walked straight toward the King.

Then Gareth stepped forward, bowed deeply, and 
said, "God bless you and all your noble company, 
especially the Knights of the Round Table. I 
have come here, Sire, to ask three things of you. 
I will ask the first one now, and leave the other 
two until this same day next year, when you 
hold the feast of Pentecost again."

"Well," the King replied, "what is your request?"
"This," Gareth said, taking courage as he noticed 
the King’s kind and honest expression. "Give 
me food and drink in your kitchen for a year and a 
day."

"That is a very small request," said the King. "If 
you had asked for a horse and armor, I would 
have given them to you. As for food, I have never 
refused it to either friend or enemy—I give it to 
you gladly. But now, tell me your name and who 
your people are."

を目にするまでは夕食の席に着かないという習慣
がありました。

騎士の一人であるサー・ガウェインが窓の外を

NHKの地上波放送で見ました。

地上波では全4話らしく
今週の土曜日に第3話が放映され、
第2話は現在、NHK ONEで視聴可能だと
思います。
(BSでは一年前に、前後編2回の形で
放送されたようです。)

テーマは、生と死、救いなど重たいと
思います。
僕は最近は、ドラマをあまり見ないので、
かえって重いテーマに引かれたのかも
知れません。

逆に、ドキュメンタリーの要素が強い
"映像の世紀 バタフライ·エフェクト"は
よく見ていたのですが、最近は重たい
テーマが多いので、あまり見なく
なりました。

マグダラのマリア、
シオン、
マルコなど聖書を思わせる
人や物事と同じ発音の人名が
ドラマの中にあります。
その一方、舞台は日本、特に
北国かつ雪国です。

エンディングにかかるのは
中島みゆきさんの曲です。

ドラマは直接には、聖書に関わる
ものではありません。

でもドラマのタイトルから"マグダラの
マリア"を想起する人は多いと思います。

映画館で見た問題作"最後の誘惑"では、
イエスはマグダラのマリアを思慕していた
ように描いていたと思います。

me with many great samples of candles and raw 
materials, so let's take a look at them. First, we 
have raw beef fat, or suet. This Russian tallow is 
what’s typically used to make dip candles.

pressed out, you can see these 'pressed cakes' 
that show how impurities are squeezed out as 
the pressure increases. Finally, the remaining 
pure substance is melted and cast into the 
candles you see here. This one in my hand is a 
stearin candle made from tallow.

I also have a 'spermaceti' candle made from 
refined whale oil, as well as natural and refined 
beeswax. Then there is this interesting material 
called paraffin, including some candles made 
from paraffin found in Irish bogs. Lastly, I have 
some wax sent to me by a friend from Japan—a 
country that has only recently opened its doors to 
the world. It’s a new kind of material for making 
candles."

themselves far away and in safer places.
